I don't think they put the plane in to be retro, south-american countries don't have the military hardware, that's all. My uncle was part of a mission to destroy planes in the Falklands conflict and they were largely prop-powered planes then, when we had sea harriers. Instead of hanging around and blowing the planes up, they machine-gunned the propellers and moved on. Besides, an F-16 verses the cargo plane would have difficult, because of the sheer speed of a jet - the engagment would have had to have been at a distance, and it would have been over in seconds.
Forster is on record saying he wanted it to be retro.

Fair enough - just a thought.

No, I think what you're saying makes sense story-wise and was part of what they were after. I just recall an interview with Forster where he talked about wanting that scene to be retro with the older airplanes.

    2. The oil thing was stupid. It wasn't even ironic because the bad guys weren't after oil. Drowning her in strawberry jam would have made more sense because of the pun on her first name -- that's how Bond finds out. I'm not arguing that should have been done; I'm saying at least it would have made some sense.

No...the 'oil thing' was clever...it kept SIS thinking this was about oil...why tell prople what you're actually up to ?
Oil is so precious to you that you squander it to drown someone? Sorry, but that is stupid, along the lines of a would-be bankrobber writing the hold up note in the back of a $1,000 bill. At least Goldfinger used gold paint and not real gold.

Yes...I'm the sure the couple of gallons used hiked up the barrel price no end 8-)

And the bank robber would take his $1,000 hold up note with him....

    Not exactly a water-tight viewpoint there ;)

It's not a question of how much or even whether it will be recovered but of what using it suggests.

Here, it suggests almost nothing and certainly nothing that adds dramatic momentum.

In Goldfinger, the villain was obsessed with gold, a concept we're reminded of in song, dialogue, imagery, and scene. He's even carrying a gold-plated revolver at the end! Gold becomes thematic and integral to the whole story.

Here, there's nothing remotely similar. Oil is just used as a liquid to drown someone. It's a throwaway point. It might very well have been strawberry jam. At least there would be some wit to that.

There isn't even dialogue onscreen to show that Bond or M are being misled into thinking Bolivia is all about oil. The closest we get is an earlier conversation where Medrano tells the villain there is no oil there. Oh, and I guess Bond gets to give the villain a quart for that walk in the desert. Gee, he could have done that anyway.

So it is stupid and nothing more than a slight revision of the iconic Goldfinger moment to be able to claim "homage" rather than "plagiarism."

The funny thing is, the more I think about it, if Quantum had the creepy imagination of earlier Bond villains, Fields could have been found with her lungs full of sand. That would have been startling as well as shown the arrogance of villains who assume the British are too stupid to figure out that what they really want is the H20.

Is it only me or did anyone else notice that at the end of Casino Royale Daniel Craig when he shoots Mr White in the leg in Siena Italy is wearing a three piece pin striped suit with a sky blue silk tie, fast forward to Quantum of Solace and in the beginning scene with the car chase scene he is wearing a charcoal one piece suit, white shirt and charcoal silk tie with white pocket square. Now I'm not one to nit pick but you would think that the production cast would have got that one right for continuity sake.Unfortunately attention to detail is everything in a Bond film and they got it wrong ...:(

He used his waistcoat as a tourniquet for Mr White's leg... I can't believe you missed that bit. Must have been the shakey-camera work... :))
