Maybe SF is the modern Thunderball, in that it made a fortune at
The box office but is not regarded by many as the best ? ;)
    Good call. B-)

Welcome, A_C. I vividly remember bringing my very specific Bondian opinions to this site when I joined. It's a heady group of minds here---a great intellectual playground.

This community, so far, seems to be one of the most rationale fanbases around.

Yes, we need more trendy angst & trollesque activity here. It's much too cerebral. :)) ;)

Yes, there's a good mix of views on AJB from the intellectual
Thought provoking threads to the child like ideas of Higgins. :p :))

TP you would be the Brad Pitt of the AJB Fight Club. AIS that makes you Ed Norton.

Someone somewhere made a very telling point that Bond had morphed into Borne. I have never seen any of the Borne films but it seems to be a sad fact that, where once Bond was copied, the film makers seem to be following others. This was the case for me with the hugely disappointing QoS, naively I thought Skyfall couldn't be any worse but sadly it was. I hold no prospect of improvement with the coming film. Indeed I shall give it a miss altogether.

That's a pity, since the little we know so far sounds promising. (And it's Bourne, btw, not Borne)
  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,792MI6 Agent
Apart from the editing in QOS, I don't recognise any Bourne in Bond. ;)
Bond is still suave, sophisticated, gambling and heavy drinker. :D
He still gets plenty of action in the bedroom ( and not just redecorating
It, as in my world ) :))
As it's a reboot of the series with CR showing a new " rough diamond "
007, and SF introducing once again the one liners, some interplay with
    Q and Moneypenny etc.
Only my opinion but Craig ( as Bond) even walks with the swagger of some
    Of the older 007s. -{
Although I've seen the Bourne films but only once or twice when they're on TV
So I'm no expert, so perhaps there are some similarities, that others have noticed
But for me Craig has become Bond, very nicely. A contemporary version of course
As you couldn't transplant a 60s Bond into the modern world.
In fact from the little bits and pieces coming out about Bond24, I'm all fired up {[]
It sounds fantastic, great cast and crew, locations and some interesting action
    Sequences. :D

As I've said I've never seen the Bourne films (that's why I don't know how to spell it). I found a small pattern emerged when new Bonds take over. Their first film is good & true to character while subsequent ones become increasing detached from the subject matter. In Craigs case CS was an excellent film, introducing him to the audience in the best traditions of Bond - QoS just an extended chase scene & ditto with Skyfall.

I know you're supposed to suspend belief but one example of the bugbears I had with SF was the fact that when Ms life was in danger, what happened? She went out into the middle of nowhere with one man for protection! Personally I found the whole scenario ridiculous.
  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,792MI6 Agent
Well that one man was BOND ! :))
You do have a point, but I'd say apart from us Bond nerds. The average audience just wants
a good night out. So for me SF, ticks all the boxes, action humour and even some emotional
content -{ ( I had to pretend I had an eyelash, in my eye on the death of M) ;)
As always all opinions are valid, But I'm really excited by what I'm reading about Bond24.
so at the moment I'm very happy, even down to the fact that only a few months ago in the Bond
Book of the Month I suggested Bond's old Ski instructor could be used as a great Personal
element in a future story, I'm glad EON are still listening to Me ! ( Or does that sound big Headed ? ) :))

Not for one moment suggesting that EON aren't right in following your suggestions, TP ;) , but can Craig-Bond stand another personal tragedy? And let's be honest, if Oberhauser (sp?) appears at the start of the film, he dies.

    To quote the immortal Sheriff JW Pepper: "what are you - some kind of doomsday machine, boy?" -{

I too would like to see a straight mission. A target set up by M
And Bond sent sent like a " Blunt instrument " to slay the dragon
    and free the damsel. :))
Today's TV and films all seem to inject some personal elements into
Their stories. Even Superheroes have got personal and relationship
Problems. So I think this is a trend that's here to stay.
Each adventure has to be a learning experience etc.

That's so cold, what about your gym instructor ? Is he not
Important to you, would you not go on a revenge filled killing
Spree, if he was killed by an arch nemesis ? ..... Maybe not
I'd just send a sympathy card with some flowers. ;)

No, I'm heavily into folk taking responsibility for their own actions.

"But that unmanned snow plough was intended for you, Bond!"

"Well he shouldn't have been so off guard he got in its way, then."

Where there's blame, there's a claim, my arse.

I think it's a shame that you would dismiss a Bond film without even seeing it, especially if you are a Bond fan. You never know what you might be missing. I understand that Craig's Bond films are not everyone's cup of tea, but even you admit that CR was excellent. Isn't it at least a possibility that the next one could be good as well? Mind you, I'm not criticizing you for your opinion. I'm just asking.

I watched Skyfall & really struggled to stay with it for the second half. I'm not a massive fan of the films anyway. I haven't seen any of the Brosnan era movies. Although I have Skyfall on DVD I don't think I'll watch it again. Seeing as the same director is, well, directing the next one, I hold no hope of an improvement over his last effort. All style & no substance.

I'm a little confused (not uncommon for me) - does that mean you are here mostly to talk about the novels and other Bond related subjects, and not the movies?

I love both Book and film, with no real problems with either. Sure some
I like more than others, and even the one I did have a problem with. I
Watched and rewatched, listened to other members observations and
Opinions. Suddenly huge parts made sense, and in fact I quite like it now.
But if you don't like it, then you don't like it. :D

No need to be confused as you've answered your question. Personally I would rather watch the 'vintage' Bond films than the new ones. Casino Royale aside (which I thought was an excellent film) my interest in the celluloid Bond fizzled out after LTK (another great film). My main concern being the removal of the character from Flemings creation. I know we have to move with the times etc & Bond has to reflect current trends but fact remains that the new films just don't do anything for me.

I think I would have probably enjoyed Skyfall etc had I been twenty years younger. On the swivel & having seen it a few times I always thought OHMSS was rubbish until I re watched it some months ago. I now believe it to be the best film of the franchise, a bold statement indeed some may say but that's my opinion.
  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,792MI6 Agent
The three film's you mention are infact my top three Bond films. :))
OHMSS, CR, LTK. {[] You sir have great taste. :D

    Thanks for the explanation. Obviously I don't share many of your opinions, but I do agree with you about this - Casino Royale is excellent and On Her Majesty's Secret Service is one of the best films in the series. -{
