After scratching and clawing its way into the list of top 10 highest grosses in the U.S. for 2015, SPECTRE was bumped by the $200-million-plus gross of The Force Awakens. Don't worry, though: with more than a week left in the year, Bond's current $192.4 million gross is less than a million dollars away from being back in the Top 10!

Hate to say it, but I think the mixed reviews in the US (some as we know were pretty nasty and dismissive) have contributed to holding the film back a bit at the box office. SF was a critic's darling and I think it brought out some folks to the theater who might have passed on a Bond film or just waited for DVD or cable. That all being said, SPECTRE has still made lots of money in theaters (it should get a bump over the XMAS / New Years holidays) and the Blu Ray/DVD release will be big.

Well, Howard, I don't think the film has been "held back"-- it's made close to $200 million in the U.S., and only nine other films this year have made that (or over). (BTW, it's now less than $50,000 from getting back into the year's top 10.) It seems, though, that we now have a tendency to project what a movie should make--or, in macroeconomic terms, what a yearly economy should do--and if it doesn't come close to those artificial terms, it's considered a letdown. Again, I don't think anyone was left poor by the latest Bond film, and I'm sure Sony won't blink when it comes to green-lighting the next one.

Not even remotely suggesting that SPECTRE has not been a big hit or underperformed, just saying it may have done even better with the type of critical success SF had.

SF was slightly less of a Bond film than SP I think, not necessarily a good or bad thing but SP seems much more in line with a traditional Bond film, and agree SF did pull some audience a "typical" Bond film just won't because of that difference. I'm glad Mendes and co. went there and did that with SF, but I'm ecstatic about how SP turned out.

Certainly, some non-Bond-fan critics hurt SP, but IMO not as much as its own 3rd act did. I rank it in my top ten, but it could have been better. Ready to see it again---Come on, BluRay! :007)

Comes in at or about 10 for me. I was really hoping it would be higher. I agree that the third act and the initial weak premise drag it down. Still enjoyed it, but not one that I will watch a lot. Now where is my OHMSS Blue Ray (it's nearly Christmas after all)

And it's now back in the year's top ten U.S. grosses, and there it will stay. Merry Christmas, Mr. Bond!

Looks like Bond has closed out the year making about $197 million at the U.S. box office. That's only a fraction of Star Wars and Jurassic World, but still good enough to finish as the tenth most successful film of the year. Worldwide it's at $850 million, so plenty of people at EON are raising their New Years glasses high.

Oh my.. Last time I watched Bond-movie was some Pierce Brosnan- flick, I didn`t liked it at all.. I really did not like Brosnan, he was sexless and arrogant to me, so I didn`t enjoy the movie. Now, I don`t know why, I went to the theatre to look Spectre with my friend, and it was.. Hmm, very interesting ;) Because Craig was HOT! I mean, I really don`t usually think this way easily, I`m quite demanding with the taste of men. But THIS guy is something who I call sexy. And now I`m watched all the other his Bond-movies, and especially Casino Royale was awesome, so was for example Defiance. Last time I think this way of some actor was when I was teenager, and young Ray Liotta was in Goodfellas..

With everyone gearing up for DVD and BluRay, I think we've forgotten the box office. Well, SPECTRE is still in some theaters. As of January 20, it's made just over $199 million in the U.S.; worldwide it's at just over $875 million. Not a bad chunk of change.

They've just pushed back the release date of the next Star Wars film by 7 months. I would hope that EON will go out of their way to avoid opening anywhere near that one next time!

Amen to that! But if #25 comes out at least a month earlier, as SP did, they should be fine...that is, if Eon can get one out that 'quickly' :s

I agree. They would need to be at least three weeks apart. I can't imagine Star Wars had any impact on SP.

I agree that Star Wars had no
Impact on SPECTRE, save for maybe a a weekend or two on the very back end. But we'll never see 25 before 2018.

I do believe there is some impact. Not with Bond fans or Star Wars fans per se, but with casual film-goers who say "Let's go to the cinema tonight. Now what shall we see?" and then run down the list of what's playing. I have quite a few friends like that who go to see a movie pretty much every weekend and just watch what appeals to them most from what's on offer. However, beyond that is the fact that when Star Wars opened it was on a ton of screens, including multiple screens in the same multiplex. To do that, other films get squeezed out and Spectre was one of those. Granted at that point the number of people still going to see Spectre was likely negligible, but I have no doubt that had Star Wars not been the sort of movie that was shown on three screens in the same cinema, Spectre likely would have lasted an extra week or two and that means at least a few hundred more ticket buyers.

Probably so...but ultimately it's the strength of word of mouth and (regrettably) critics' published opinion that weighs more heavily...and SP took a few significant blows to the nuts in that regard, IMO, particularly amongst non-Bond-fan critics. James Bond ought to be able to release a month distant from a Star Wars picture and not be crimped too badly by it.

Given how much SPECTRE made in the US, it doesn't look like the critics' opinion influenced the cinema-goers at all.
  • bluemanblueman PDXPosts: 1,667MI6 Agent
Bond has proven to be critic-proof for the most part. SF was an anomaly, for reasons discussed, but SP has done Bond-expected box office, yep.

I'd estimate the bad press cost them a bit; probably an eight-figure number. For every casual fan who gave it a pass because of a critical drubbing, possible second viewings never occurred. Impossible to quantify. It IS Bond, of course, and his devotees keep him profitable. Garden-variety film-goers add a layer of cushion.

Im still shocked to hear that the car chase scene was supposingly 40-50 million alone. It was hardly a classic car chase was it? EON def not getting bang for buck, I mean half of ot must have been internal shots of DC making a hands free phone call

Maybe this info is not correct

I think I heard something similar. They spent a lot of money on making the film look great. I think Spectre was the best-looking Bond film in a very long time, but looks don't matter without substance.
