    Great project Blair! It's excellent to see that T&A and so supportive of it -{
Why do I seem to recall a member's collection including all of those :s

I believe 006 has a couple—his incredible collection thread https://www.ajb007.co.uk/topic/49272/the-ties-that-bond/ But obviously he'd have to be asked first as he might not still have them, can't send them in etc

    Morning all,

Just stumbled upon this thread, what a fantastic project!!

I do have the Sulka GoldenEye alternative, I also have an alternative version of the Vesper Train tie in Casino Royale by Brioni. The colour and pattern are the same, however the square design is smaller than the screen accurate version.

    0542.jpg

More than happy to lend the ties, whilst they may not be 100% accurate, some details such as width length, colour, and weave may assist in recreating these ties.

Personally I would love to see the Bilbao tie from TWINE and the copper/blue from TND.
    For England James?

It is a mighty fine looking tie. Thanks for that, urhash. We must try and get that one into production. Any further clues or owners coming forward would be great.

    Cheers, all.

    Here you go gents.

On the prior page, the caption reads: "Pierce Brosnan, on one of the Goldeneye sets, photographed by John Stoddart, in a style reminiscent of the studio portraits of the Forties and Fifties stars"

That is a beauty, 006! Definitely interested in letting the lab boys see what they can do.

I'm only slightly concerned that neckties are part of the respective brand's creative cache, and having another brand copying it is...illegal?
Might've read that somewhere. Is that a concern for this project?

I'm glad you brought this up. It is legal to copy clothing design. You can copy another's collar or cocktail cuff design or the shape of a necktie and not be sued. But prints and designs are copyrightable. I don't imagine that T&A will have problems replicating their own patterns. But to be honest, I'm surprised they are willing to copy designs that other brands produced, not just because of legal reasons. Does T&A know that half of Brosnan's Bond ties were not theirs? If they want to replicate others' ties, I am certainly not going to complain. And it also seems unlikely that any of the brands who originally made Brosnan's ties would complain either because it's unlikely they would notice 25 years later.

The Sulka, Herbie Frogg and Simpsons of Piccadilly names are still in use or are owned by someone. The current Sulka brand, I believe, is far removed from the ownership of the old company.

Interesting that Simpsons made the Goldeneye!

I definitely saw it on eBay in a diff colour under Sulka.

Maybe Lindy got it custom made by Simpsons in her own colour scheme???? Kind of like what happened with Spectre regarding the jackets?

The very same reason I brought that up.

These brands likely did not make their own ties. The same silk maker (such as Vanners) likely weaved the silk and possibly made the ties and sold the silk or finished ties to multiple brands. Not all brands are concerned about exclusivity.

I'm not getting the sense from that article that Simpsons definitely made the tie under discussion (the tank tie). The article just says "... and a Simpson of Piccadilly patterned silk tie labelled "1995 GOLDENEYE PIERCE BROSNAN"". Bearing in mind there were several other ties in the film from different manufacturers, the Simpsons one in the photo doesn't appear in the film, and the tank tie could still be by Sulka. I bought an incredibly similar one at Benson & Clegg of Piccadilly Arcade a couple of years after Goldeneye was made, there were a few around at that time.

No, the tie at auction was used in promotional photos. I thought you were talking about that one, not the tank tie.

While T&A are mining 1990s Brosnan nostalgia, I wonder if they have any interest in reissuing ties from the Thomas Crown Affair?
  • The Bond VivantThe Bond Vivant SeendPosts: 1,325MI6 Agent
Just to answer a few queries raised:
Most of the ties we are looking to recreate are T&A exclusive designs, which means there are no rules against replicating our own designs.
In the case of certain designs from Goldeneye, and Casino Royale, the patterns are not necessarily exclusive, because almost identical patterns have already been located in the T&A archives, from dates in the 1990’s. Hence, by examining an original tie against the archive pattern, we can establish any differences, if any exist.

T&A also never replicate anything exactly. All the ties will be interpretations of the originals, rather than the originals themselves. They will all be intricately woven jacquard weave, similar to their current Bond ties, whether the originals were woven this way or not. The silk will be 320 picks, rather than 270 as was common in the 1990’s, meaning that the ties will also have a thicker feel to them than the originals. In cases where ties are also dull in colour, shading is adjusted to provide an almost reflective sheen to the ties. It makes the colours feel more electric.

Other firms also already exist which provide interpretations of ties rather than the originals, such as Magnoli Clothiers.

Finally, I would reiterate that this is the prototype sample phase of the project. The ties may not even start to receive release dates for another 18 months - 2 years. Some may be listed as ‘Bond’ ties, some may not receive this status and just be added to the ‘Classic’ range of ties. Others may not receive the go ahead, which means that the sample batch for that design may be the only batch ever made.

Hence, extremely kind members who do decide to help us and lend us their wonderful ties, will receive a free example of a tie from the early batches that are made, plus we pay for any postage and packing costs. We hope to start with all the designs that were originally made by T&A anyway, and if we generate enough support and momentum from fans, we may provide interpretations of others as well.

I think it’s important to emphasise though that our main aim is to reproduce all the wonderful T&A designs that 007 fans have not been able to buy for 25 years. At the same time we’ll look into the other Brosnan designs of the period, but it’s not my decision as to whether all ties enter production. My main aim is to get a batch of samples for each design. Similarly, to be accepted as a ‘Bond’ tie T&A have to get the ok from EON, so I expect there’s a longer process ahead.

You sold the copper Hamburg tie to to me Welshboy, and I still have it. It is one of the prized pieces of my collection! I would be more than happy to help out with getting it replicated for others. Blair, I will reach out to you and coordinate with what you would like to do.

    Hi Blair

As mentioned in emails I had the copper Hamburg tie and sold it here but the PMs are long gone so forgot who to :#

Also I won the DAD British Airways flight tie on eBay but the seller sent my tie to another buyer and I got his tie instead

David Schofield who I believe sadly passed away told me many years ago he had many of the Brosnan ties stored away (I think he said in Spain)

Anyhow hopefully many AJBers come forward to help. There was of course the dude who recently advertised stuff in advance of his eBay auction however I hear he has dissapeared

    Hi Blair,

I am curious if you have perhaps some news about this project. Of course I hope this project will be a success. Will the project also contain any of the Turnbull & Asser 'Casino Royale' ties?

    Thanks for the update!

    Welshboy78,

if I am right, Turnbull & Asser made the 'Casino Royale' train tie and the tie when Bond meets Mathis. Or was it Brioni, perhaps someone can tell me more about this.

    Welshboy78,

if I am right, Turnbull & Asser made the 'Casino Royale' train tie and the tie when Bond meets Mathis.

I dont believe that is the case. Think the train one is Brioni and the Mathis one is well speculated with Brioni, Charvet, Ted Baker mentioned.

I think T&A would have milked the ties if it had been them

At this stage we've got the Rubyeon tie being analysed, and the Copper Hamburg Arrival tie is en route from The States. The Bilbao tie material has been tracked down in the archive, as has the Moneypenny tie. All very exciting, but we are some way off production samples yet.

Just a quick update on this exciting project with Turnbull & Asser. I can let you know that the order for ‘Sample Batch 1’ was submitted yesterday. The project has created a buzz. Everyone is in awe of the first tie tie on loan from one of the members on this forum tie, and while my colleague was taking measurements and a few photographs, it received a lot of compliments.

Hence, in terms of details, the order is for 2 sample batches of 2 designs (the Hong Kong Rubyeon and the Bilbao Zigzag tie). Each tie will be 57 inches in length with a 9.5cm blade width. We have requested that the ‘Tipping’ (ie the section of lining at the back of the tie) features ‘Turnbull & Asser’ discreetly woven into it, just like the originals. However, the T&A label will be moved to the back of the blade, below the ‘Keeper’, (the loop at the back of each tie).

The second batch of 2 designs will hopefully include the Copper Hamburg Arrival Tie and one other, currently under discussion.

Turnbull & Asser have provided a conservative estimation that it will take around 2 months to produce the ties, but this is very much dependant upon how long the silk mill takes to  reproduce the fabrics. Hence, it may take a little longer if something is not reproduced correctly, but we want to make sure everything is 100% perfect!

There will be approximately 7 of each tie available to buy of this initial sample batch, but we’re not taking orders yet until we’ve got clarification of the fabric back from the silk mill. Prices are not known yet, but as it’s unlikely that these ties will see a release date in Turnbull & Asser stores within the next 3 years, so buyers of one of these initial samples are effectively purchasing an extremely limited edition item.

Here are some pictures of the Rubyeon Tie that is ready to be sent to the silk mill to be placed on CAD (Computer Aided Design).

    Great news!

Will the Bilbao tie have the same color inner lining as the screen-used version?
