Here is an Esquire magazine article called “Every James Bond Themed Ranked”:

    https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/music/g26729930/james-bond-theme-songs-ranked/

Ellish’s song is ranked at number 4 even surpassing one of Barry’s best songs “Moonraker” which is at number 19. Adele’s song is at number 16—which is a come down for her after years of the song being hailed as the best Bond song ever. Ellish’s song will probably have the same fate.

These sort of lists always throw up one or two strange and controversial opinions, and this one has more than its fair share in my opinion. My main points of contention:

    - You Know My Name last!?! You must be joking!

    - I've certainly never seen All Time High anywhere near the top half of a Bond theme ranking. And while I personally quite like the song, 8th best is far too high.

    - 16th is a really low ranking for Skyfall, which is an excellent song in my opinion. I'd say it probably sneaks into my top 10.

    - Thunderball deserves way more respect. It's a quintessential Bond theme, with a powerhouse performance by Tom Jones and the big 1960s 'Barry sound' at its peak.

On the positive side though, the top 3 is exactly the same as my own top 3. So at least I agree with the ranking in a few areas.

So Decca will release both Zimmer's NTtD score and the "Bond 25" remastered/rerecorded themes collection (could be interesting depending on the choices they make there). But there'll be no physical release of the Eilish single? That's a first, isn't it? Makes this middle-aged man weary of kids and the digital future! :))

Nice. Not too much new footage and to me it seems too obvious Bille is miming the song, but still nice.

Forgive me if this has been posted, but apparently it's a UK No.1 now.

That's unusual, isn't it? I know Skyfall made it to no. 1 in the UK, but are there other examples?
  • BarbelBarbel ScotlandPosts: 36,053Chief of Staff
If my ageing memory serves, AVTAK was No1 in the US and No2 in the UK but I'd need to check.

    Edit- Yes, that's right.

I love the song, think it fits well with Daniel Craig's moody, love-struck Bond. Listening to the lyrics made me realize how relationship-prone his Bond is. Spending a lot of tenure with someone or being heartbroken.

    I know i know, tedious isn't it

They’ve been playing the same note (pun intended) since Casino Royale. The MI movies do Bond much better than Bond does at this point.

Skyfall made it to no. 2 in the UK I think.
WOTW was no. 1 I think.
I read somewhere that NTTD is the biggest hit of the year so far.

Fleming's Bond was actually exactly like this. Always falling in love quickly...wanting to marry this new girl of his dreams only for her to die or end up betraying him in some way.

I liked the song, though because of its novelty it may take a while for me to settle on it.

Must say it didn't grip me at the first time but the live performance did impress me a lot and I'm glad it made no1.
Think it is indeed a smart blend of fresh and classic, hats off to those who had the idea to put together Eilish, Zimmer and Marr.

Tell me you don't want Zimmer's score in the movie to sound like this. And with Johnny Marr for extra points.

That's a hard no from me.

I can hear similarities in the structure of this music with some of John Barry's pieces like Gumbold's Safe, but Barry's doing so much more with it. Zimmer is just repetitive without much development. It was cool when Philip Glass did it 40-50 years ago, but now it's old and even Glass is now developing his music more.

It comes across as mawkish in the films but less so in the books. I'm just bored with it. NTTD has gof an uphill struggle in as much as the Bond Swan relationship was never convincing mind you very little in the film was for that matter. I'm keen to see how they shore that up in this one.

I'll let you know when I've actually heard Zimmer's score....and heard it within the context of the film. As far as the simple vs complex argument/issue I'll give you what is probably a much too simple and limited response: in the world of guitar players there are players who are incredibly skilled and can play a million notes and incredibly difficult and complex passages but leave one unmoved and there are guitar players who can play two or three notes and send chills down your spine. I try to go with what I find pleasing to my own senses and of course with film music, what works relative to the context of the film. No one of course is right or wrong when it comes to music because it is "art" (except for Die Another Day which was garbage :)) ) I do think one of the things we are all hoping for is a score which rises above just being another sound effect/white noise or even worst, a distraction.

For those of you still non-plussed by Billie's song, you might enjoy this mashup with Skyfall:

I personally enjoy the three Bond films that have just an instrumental piece for the opening credits, but thats never going to happen anytime soon.

I'm still on the fence with NTTD opening credits song, there's just not enough umph in it for me.

You‘re mistaking, the opening titles are instrumental. Matt Monro sings only in the end credits.
