Was it this year or last year they did a James Bond season? It all blends in for me. Last year, surely.

Dr No kicks off in early January. All are present and correct, including the latest No Time To Die.

Unlike my suggestion to the cinema on Twitter, no double bills or themed all-nighters. But all seem to be in the downstairs cinema, so that's good. I may catch the first three, I won't be revisiting the ones I saw last time but there's a good few to catch anyway - Diamonds Are Forever I skipped last time as the cinema was a bit full and it was Covid still.

https://princecharlescinema.com/PrinceCharlesCinema.dll/Seasons?e=29205568

This evening's sell-out 'Q The Music' concert at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, was another magnificent celebration of James Bond's greatest hits by Warren Ringham and the band. Vocalists Kerry Schultz and Matt Walker were as brilliantly versatile as ever; compere David Zaritsky did a great job, and special guests Caroline Bliss, Samantha Bond and Naomie Harris took to the stage several times as three Moneypennies to lend support for Q The Music, express cameraderie, relate anecdotes and production insights, and share their reflections on the shifting Bond/ Moneypenny dynamic. I'm sure Lois Maxwell would have joined them in spirit.

The first half of the evening included anniversary tributes to TB, AVTAK and GE. The two John Barry scores were remembered in well curated instrumental suites topped by the films' title songs. Warren prefaced the evening's 60th anniversary TB spot with a shout out to LaLaLand's recent CD releases, an appropriate plug given that many of us will have recently received our stunning new TB CDs through the letterbox.

For me, Warren's Barry suites are always the highlight of these evenings. 'Death of Fiona' from TB's Club Kiss Kiss sequence brought all the excitement of blended diegetic and non-diegetic music, mounting to a lethal climax, while 'The Bomb/ The Spa/ Fight At The Chateau' evoked ambient stealth, eerie menace, funereal gravitas and the fast-paced bombast of Bondian action. Whether deliberate or serendipitous, the stage lighting during this segment suggested the film's chopper-view imagery of netting covering the wreckage of a NATO plane in the turquoise shallows of the sea...

Warren's souvenir programme includes articles covering both the tangled production history of TB and the story of the film's alternate title songs. Kerry Schultz seemed to channel simultaneously both Dionne Warwick and Shirley Bassey in a terrific performance of 'Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang' - a synthesis accomplished enough to resolve any by-gone rivalries - while Matt Walker gave his customary, powerful rendition of 'Thunderball'!

On to 1985. In his article on the music of AVTAK for the souvenir programme, Warren acknowledges the limitations of that score as well as it strengths, but his AVTAK ensemble certainly played to the strengths. The suite began with the sublime 'Wine With Stacey' before sampling a selection of haunting ambient and action cues, including the mimetic theme for Zorin's airship.

And so to 1995. The concert opened with the first phase of a celebration of GE: the James Bond theme in the Starr Parodi & Jeff Eden Fair arrangement, as for Pierce Brosnan's original trailer. This segued into the disco-brass nostalgia of Marvin Hamlisch's 'Bond 77'. It was a bold choice to go on to tribute GE with a performance of Eric Serra's 'The Experience of Love', a track unloved in isolation but which, in cinemas, functions serviceably as a wind-down over GE's end credits. On stage, Walker lent 'Experience' credibility, with a Serra-like nasal tone, supported by Kerry pitching in with backing vocals. Kerry, of course, trumped 'Experience' when she returned to belt out 'Goldeneye', giving that classic title song its full Tina Turner heft.

The first half of the evening was buttressed by standalone hits including 'Diamonds Are Forever', 'The Man With The Golden Gun' and 'Licence To Kill'. For 'Golden Gun' guitarist Dan Booth obviously relished going wah-wah, while the Gladys Knight ballad clearly remains Kerry's showpiece tribute. The second half of the evening opened in stirring style with an OHMSS arrangement, no anniversary needed as pretext to celebrate that film's landmark score. The music covered the drama leading from Bond's morning ski with Tracy to the avalanche and its aftermath, before easing into Walker's performance of the poignant 'We Have All the Time in the World.' From there, the concert featured some clever back-to-back pairings: 'You Only Live Twice', followed by 'The Writing’s on the Wall'; 'You Know My Name', paired with 'Another Way to Die'; and 'Skyfall', answered by 'No Time To Die'. Several more classics were presented as standalone highlights: 'Goldfinger,' 'Live and Let Die', 'The Living Daylights' and 'Nobody Does It Better'.

Then came a surprise. Before the encore, David Arnold - no less! - took to the stage to join Warren and Zaritsky, creating a real sense of occasion and engaging everyone with his comic wit. Looking casual in a baseball cap, the composer cut a delightful contrast to the sea of tuxedos and evening gowns surrounding him. Then Warren announced that next year’s concert will be a celebration of Arnold's Bond scores, news that was met with rapturous applause. Tickets, we were told, will go on sale in January. The plan is that Q the Music will be bolstered by the RAF band, and the concert will contribute to the Help For Heroes charity.

The evening closed with a high-octane preview of next year's Arnold-themed extravaganza. First was 'Come In 007, Your Time Is Up', then Kerry returned for 'Surrender', a powerhouse track that never made it to TND's opening credits but which has since become a fan favourite. I'll be buying my next ticket in the New Year!

I attended a London screening this evening of Sean Parkin's new film, 'John Barry: From York With Love'. This was hosted at the Club Room at The Bedford pub in Balham. The screening was preceded by a well-received live performance of 'Born Free' by a keyboard player and a vocalist - both in their teens - from 'Future Talent', a charity which provides opportunities for aspiring young musicians, and to which Parkin is donating proceeds from his film. Parkin said a few words before the screening, as did Charlie Francis, who supplies the voice of Barry for the film, reading directly from Barry's interviews in a voiceover. As a musician himself, Francis focused his introductory talk for the screening on Barry's distinctive style, including an appreciative analysis of 'Try' (OHMSS), the track with which Parkin's film opens.

As the title signals, 'John Barry: From York With Love' is made in a similar documentary style to Jack Cocker's 'From Roger Moore With Love'. It consists largely of stills and movie clips; what's lacking is any 'home movie' material of the sort that Cocker was able to access in the case of Moore (and which gave him the reason to make his film). Parkin covers Barry's career until 1971, without making it really clear why that should be the cut-off date. It's a less ambitious documentary in the sense that, by Parkin's own admission, its narrative is based principally on one source - Barry's musical biography, 'The Man With The Midas Touch' - and it contains no content which would be new to anyone with more than a passing interest in Barry's career. There's not much sense of York in the film, either, beyond references to Barry's early schooling and his father's picture house, though the glamour of London in the swinging sixties is atmospherically evoked. There is, however, a richer use of movie and TV clips in Parkin's film than in Cocker's. Every Bond movie from DN to DAF is represented, sourcing trailers and some of the titles sequences as well as moments from the main body of the films - together with clips from Barry's other major movies, his lesser known films, his early TV appearances with The John Barry Seven, his work with Adam Faith and his later TV material, including the Sunsilk ad and 'The Persuaders!' If the quality of the film clips is inconsistent - some are rather grainy - the material is inventively re/edited to Barry's original hooks and soundtracks. The whole thing is 'unauthorised', but apparently the writers of 'The Man With The Midas Touch' have given their blessing. I don't know how far Parkin's support of 'Future Talent' as a charity helped with rights to make liberal use of soundtracks and movie clips. Anyway, I certainly enjoyed watching bits of classic Bond re-purposed on the big screen, free of corporate packaging. After the screening I congratulated Charlie Francis on how well he'd voiced Barry. Unlike Steve Coogan in 'From Roger Moore With Love', Francis doesn't attempt a direct impersonation of his subject - he's not an actor - and his contribution feels less intrusive.

This was an enjoyable evening. Apparently the film is due to stream soon, and I'd encourage fans of Barry and Bond to catch it if you can. 'Future Talent' is worthy of support too.

I've booked to see 'A Role To Die For' in late July in the Marylebone Theatre in London. It's a satirical comedy about the process of the casting of the next James Bond - and possibly already out of date if the play's protagonist, Deborah, is meant to be based on Barbara Broccoli, who has recently ceded creative control of Bond to Amazon. The production, which has had its intial run in Gloucester, is playing in London till the end of August.

I wonder if the writer, Jordan Waller, perused this forum's own 'Imaginary Conversations' for ideas! Or if they've hurriedly added a new final Act for the London dates about BB's and MGW's relinquishment of control?: there'd be enough material there for David Hare!

I was thrilled to attend 'Q The Music''s 'James Bond Spectacular' at the O2 Indigo in North Greenwich on Sunday evening for a wonderful series of performances by Warren Ringham and his band, entertaining an audience of hundreds of fans and concert-goers. (I was just there for the concert, not the reception or after-party.)

GF and TMWTGG were especially tributed as this year's anniversary Bond films. GF was evoked visually on stage by a gold-painted mannequin of Jill Masterson draped on a bed [no: she was a real person!*], next to a stack of faux gold ingots, while TMWTGG was celebrated in style with live appearances by Maud Adams and Britt Ekland, each briefly interviewed by affable compere David Zaritsky. Not to mention a pair of giant golden gun props at the back of the stage, barrels angled towards each other as if in a salute. It was lovely to see Maud and Britt in person, of course; Zaritsky's experience at keeping things pacy and upbeat when chatting with Bond luminaries who are advancing in years came into its own right here. Ringham and vocalist Matt Walker were both impressively attired in sponsor Anthony Sinclair's line of tuxedo as originally designed for Sean Connery in DN; Ringham admitted to spoiling his high-end trousers by getting a splodge of gold paint on them when making earlier backstage adjustments to the position of the mannequin [correction: Emma!*], to ensure its [her!*] pose was exactly the same as the 'golden girl' model's in GF!

The evening's music opened appropriately enough with a GF suite, strident and suspenseful by turns: 'Bond Back In Action Again', 'Into Miami', 'Golden Girl', 'The Laser Beam', 'Oddjob's Pressing Engagement', 'Dawn Raid On Fort Knox' and, of course, the GF title song, belted out by Kerry Schultz. Shivers ran down my spine during the 'Raid' cue. There's something gloriously nervy, for example, about those chords which accompany the moment in the film when we see Felix Leiter among the apparent victims of the Flying Circus's aerial mission; the music ratchets up the tension in a uniquely Bondian way.

It was also exciting to hear 'The Laser Beam' in live performance. 'Q The Music''s glossy brochure for the concert, a thoroughly engrossing read, contains a couple of excellent articles by Ringham on the music of GF and TMWTGG, including some discussion of 'The Laser Beam'. Ringham offers fascinating insight on the pragmatism of John Barry's artistry: "One of the things which I've always felt Barry did for Bond music, and really established [in GF] ... is what I call a 'modular' way of ... film score writing. ... I can only imagine the frustration of a film composer who spends months crafting a beautifully constructed piece of music for a scene, records it, then finds the editor has changed the length of the scene and so your music has to be carved up to fit the new length. [To avoid this problem, Barry would] write a 4-bar idea, then just repeat it again [and again] and layer something else on top." Expedient - but done superbly!

If TMWTGG's leading ladies were able to grace the evening in person, a memory of that film's male leads was conjured by performances of the jaunty 'Let's Go Get 'Em' - complete with penny whistle - and the quirkily sinister 'Scaramanga's Fun House'. I was particularly delighted by the inclusion of the latter, which I've previously enjoyed when browsing 'Q The Music''s online uploads. The stage and the band were bathed in blood-red light for 'Fun House', as if channeling the post-Dracula Christopher Lee's stalking presence as a deadly villain. I have to say, though, that, for me, the Barry highlight of the evening was a wonderful addendum to last year's FRWL anniversary celebrations: 'James Bond with Bongos', a piece which conveys all the atmosphere, subterfuge and cat-and-mouse menace of FRWL's Flemingesque Istanbul.

David Arnold's action music was well represented during the evening by exhilarating performances of 'Ice Bandits', 'Backseat Driver' (ooh, shut that door!) and, in the encore, 'Come In OO7, Your Time Is Up'. The latter was, as much as anything, a celebration of the O2 venue's Bond location, the site of the Millennium Dome where TWINE's PTS climaxes. For me, 'Q The Music''s renditions of Arnold's heady set pieces of the Pierce Brosnan films resolve the counterpoint between orchestral music and burbling electronica in favour of the orchestra, which is really how I prefer it.

The core of the evening was comprised, as ever, of performances of a wide selection of Bond songs, including all the big iconic numbers. Vocalist Kerry Schultz deserves special credit, managing convincingly to cover everyone from Shirley Bassey to Billie Eilish to Simon Le Bon to Carly Simon to Jack White to Alicia Keys to Tina Turner to Nancy Sinatra to Lulu to Paul Waaktaar-Savoy (duetting with Matt Walker's Morton Harket) to Adele to k. d. lang to Paul McCartney to Shirley Manson to (especially) Gladys Knight... (but not to Madonna: the techno 'Die Another Day' number isn't on the 'Q The Music' roster, for understandable reasons.) As for Walker, he matched Sam Smith's falsetto admirably for 'The Writing's On The Wall' and held the long, final note of 'Thunderball' with consummate cool. The highlight of Walker's evening was surely the chance to rock it up with 'You Know My Name' but Schultz managed to top even that with a truly bombastic performance of 'Another Way To Die'.

I've been to three of these concerts now and always enjoy 'Q The Music''s take on the Bond songs. The set list is circumscribed by the Bond canon, of course, but there isn't enough time to include all of the songs in any one evening alongside the other items; there's always a question of which songs might not make the cut for a particular show. I love them all and am happy to listen to them repeatedly but I wonder whether it isn't perhaps time for 'Q The Music' to open the door a little further, for the sake of even greater variety, and admit some of the great 'unused'. How about a Ringham innings for the Julie Rogers demo of 'You Only Live Twice', for example; or Alice Cooper's 'The Man With The Golden Gun' (freaky bits included), or Blondie's 'For Your Eyes Only' (a pretty little post-punk song) or Arnold's 'No Good About Goodbye' (the Bassey-meets-Craig ballad that 'never was' - except covertly - but which always should have been canon)?

It was a large audience for Sunday's show. 'Q The Music' loyalists were out in force; Bond enthusiasts of varying degrees of fannishness (Zaritsky certainly played to the fan gallery with a smattering of esoteric gags); doubtless a few 'plus ones' and probably a substantial number of casual concert-goers attracted by a spectacular O2 outing for headline Bond songs. For me, as I suspect for many fans, the main interest of these concerts remains in the more obscure choices of instrumental cues from the body of the films, Barry's cues in particular.

I very much look forward to the next one.

*Note:

Warren Ringham has been kind enough to reply to this review and point out the following:

"It wasn't a mannequin! You are not the only one - everyone thought she was, cause Emma was bloody still for half an hour. Incredible.

We had been planning and discussing this for months, down to how the arm is draped, the fact the pillow is next to the head not under it, how we would get her on and off with the curtain closed....and she bloomin nailed it.

I got paint as last minute i went to just speak to her and adjust, and she brushed my knee...!"

😀

There is a season of sixties films featuring John Barry soundtracks on at the BFI London Southbank. It features a couple of James Bond items as well as The Ipcress File. Curiously though, not OHMSS, which finished off the decade quite nicely for Sir John the Master of Music.

On 6/2/2024 there is a talk being given by Bob Stanley, the season's curator, followed by a screening of YOLT, which might be worth a look.
