I'm confused. They paint the Bonds as loaded Scots, hence Skyfall Manor. So that means that James was a rather well-off chap growing up. Makes sense since Alec Trevelyian mentions that his parents had the "luxury" of dying in a mountain climbing accident.

However, in CR during the (brilliantly written) dialogue between Vesper and Bond, she mentiones that "by the cut of your suit you went to Oxfird or whatever... and you wear it with such disdain, hence the chip on your shoulder... which means you were there by the graces of someone else"

Sorry so who's right? If Bond grew up in a castle, why would he need the graces of someone else to attend Oxford?

You should take that 'PS' bit out mate, it could spoil the film for people.

as for Bond's background, you have to remember that Vesper was speculating about Bond's past.

I agree I don't think every word Vesper said was true but I think Bond was impressed with how generally perceptive she was

I wouldn't trust her opinion on anything. :))

In one of the books, it's explained that Bond was raised by an aunt after his parents died. The family estate probably went to one of Bond's uncles with the death of his father and maybe dad didn't have much in the way of life insurance.

From what I remember, that series does explain a good amount.
