A fairly serious question from a guy in the States...

Well that is kind of the ultimate aim, it’s never been for charity. Even Fleming was pretty keen to sell off the film rights to anyone he could.

Unless you’re saying making NTTD didn’t involve those things too?

  • chrisisallchrisisall Western Mass, USAPosts: 9,104MI6 Agent

As an artist I have never done anything for charity. I have done things for love of the work or subject matter, but always expected to get paid. My regular day job is solely about the money. Point here is, art comes first, then the money. If money comes first, it probably isn't all that much about the art.

When Bond 26 inevitably premieres, we'll be getting a different incarnation of Bond after Barbara Broccoli and Daniel Craig decided to kill him off. If audiences can get past that, I think they can come to terms with a resurrected SPECTRE.

Well this is their day job. No one’s saying that they didn’t want to make good art (I’d say taking a risk on CR shows that’s exactly what they wanted to do), but take it up with Cubby if you don’t like that money was hugely important in these endeavours.

Many people say: 'They killed James Bond in the last film, so no decision on Earth can be worse than that'.

So having the next iteration of our beloved character a woman whose name will be 'Jane Bond' is less shocking to you than Bond's death in NTTD?

  • emtiememtiem SurreyPosts: 6,820MI6 Agent

Chris didn't say that, you just did. You're arguing with yourself there 😁

  • Number24Number24 NorwayPosts: 23,695MI6 Agent

For arguments' sake, it's sometimes the only remaining option.

  • SeanIsTheOnlyOneSeanIsTheOnlyOne Posts: 723MI6 Agent

Then what was the point? What does Bond's death in the last film have to do with that?

No, it's not more shocking because there is no way they would do that. Remember that Ghostbusters movie where they made all the Ghostbusters women? No, you don't, and neither do I because we didn't watch it. Most people didn't. They won't go there with Bond.

They won't make Bond a female, but they could give a female co-lead their own spinoff series. There's been talks of the Bond ladies getting their own spinoff series numerous times. Amazon just might pursue it.

Some people would complain even if you hang them with a new rope

I think what Mr Martini says sounds probable.

If it's done properly and doesn't interfere with the movies, I don't really care. I don't consider TND as a Wai Lin adventure or DAD as a Jinx adventure. The most important is keeping Bond the main character of his own missions on the big screen. What happens on Prime, I just don't give a damn to it unless it directly deals with Bond himself (a Young Bond series for instance).

Actually Ghostbusters is not an example that came to my mind considering the female characters of this reboot didn't exist in the originals. None of them has been named Dr. 'Patricia' Venkman or Dr. 'Elena' Spengler, which means there's no mutation of established characters.

It's different from having 'Jane' Bond to me.

  • chrisisallchrisisall Western Mass, USAPosts: 9,104MI6 Agent

I did not know that because I never watched it. But you see my point I think. Throwing a gender or race swap at Bond is out of the question, especially in light of the attitudes of the money guys in the USA at the moment.

This feels like a lot of handwringing over nothing. MGM was valued at 3-4 billion, yet Amazon paid 8.45 - and they’ve all but spelled out that the extra 5 billion was for Bond. Then they threw Eon another billion. They didn’t do all that to NOT make the widest, most mass appeal Bond they can.

I don’t trust Jeff Bezos to sit the right way on a toilet, but I think it’s safe to say he has no interest in rewriting what he understands to be the Bond recipe.

  • SeanIsTheOnlyOneSeanIsTheOnlyOne Posts: 723MI6 Agent

Which raises the question: what does he understand to be the Bond recipe?

After all, the last person who used the two words 'James Bond' since the announcement was Michael G. Wilson. Bezos asked on X who people would pick as the 'next Bond', not the 'next James Bond', and Mike Hopkins talked about the 'next phase of the legend 007', which also implies the number seems more important to such people than the name.

At this level of the process, I have strictly no reason to think those people do not misunderstand Fleming's creation, and I'm ready to believe some of the Amazon MGM executives have always considered the name 'James Bond' as an alias, opening the door to the codename theory. In the other worst case scenario, they see Bond as a genuine identity but they just think it's time to make the character a female whose first name will be Jane or something like that, like in the series Elementary with Dr. 'Joan' Watson played by Lucy Liu.

I've been telling people for some time how Fleming rather brilliantly created villains (and even some sympathetic characters) with obvious personality disorders, like psychopathy and malignant narcissism.

When he describes people like Drax, Krest, Goldfinger and so on as cold, greedy, bloated, vengeful vulgarians, he's not just trying to prop them up as villains but to show the real defective characteristics that drive someone to put their needs over those of everyone else and in a distorted and pernicious way. Because Fleming was essentially writing pulp fiction and the movies often took those ideas and made them even more exaggerated, a lot of viewers tend to think these characteristics are unreal or even cartoonish. But they're not. Some might argue we're seeing all that playing out right now.

In terms of Bond and Amazon, I'm more interested to see how American techies are likely to shape the product, regardless of the politics of the day, though I know the Bond movies have always in some way either reflected such when the films are made or followed the lead of trends established by other films.

Hmmm, best case he leaves it to proven film-makers to execute. Worst case he forces them to do pastiche & best-of type movies with lots of humour....

"I don’t trust Jeff Bezos to sit the right way on a toilet".... "Some might argue we're seeing all that playing out right now." Wow, you guys are SO political! 😜LOL. J/K

Personally, I don't need any more 'grounded trauma' like SF, but neither do I want to regress to the placating excesses of MR. Slightly bizarre within control- is that too much to ask from the next couple of movies?

As Roper said in Enter The Dragon, I'm a man of little faith...

"I don’t trust Jeff Bezos to sit the right way on a toilet"

From a purely literary standpoint this sentence is pure gold! I mean, even if that sentence was about Ian Fleming or Martin Luther King I'd have to admire the wordsmith behind it. 😀

Not at all. But the fact that Peter Jackson used one of Earth's gems and amazon used only greenscreen and reused their own sets on a budget the size of the sun in scale is a big tell on many things

You may find it instructive to see who open neo-nazis with swastika tattoos favour: MAGA or the Democratic party? You also may want to see what Americans speaks at neo-nazi party events like the German AfD. Are they Democrats or .... something else?

  • chrisisallchrisisall Western Mass, USAPosts: 9,104MI6 Agent

Thank you sir, my Democrats are severely lacking, but on the whole not evil. The Republicans are mostly Bond villains & QOS Elvis level lackeys at this point. Making a Bond movie without dealing with this WORLD crisis might seem a little trite.... at least to non- USA types. Eh?
