Can Ireland ever be in the James Bond movies?

DipsuchosDipsuchos Posts: 2MI6 Agent

Hi guys, I made a video on this topic and would love some feedback on it. Personally I don't think they could ever do one because of the situation in the North of Ireland during the 60s-90s, and which still prevents them doing it to this day out of the sensitivity of the issue. However, I do feel with the changeover to Amazon, that they might be willing to throw caution to the wind and do an IRA plotline in a future bond, especially if that mad rumour is true to bring pierce back, who has said he would be interested in an IRA plotline.

If anyone would like to see the video, I would be grateful - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxm8qE6xrPo

Ireland can be in the James movies, but I don't see the IRA and "the Troubles" being a part of the plot.

It might appear as a giant elephant in the room then to Irish people if you leave them out or not mention them.

Really? James Bond can't play a round of golf, have a car chase or meet a contact in Ireland without the IRA being mentioned?

    Pierce Brosnan is Irish.

If that is not an example of Ireland's best right at the centre of Bond, I don't know what is!

This is Thunderbird 2, how can I be of assistance?

When I was in Greystones a couple of years ago there was a film crew filming what looked to be a boat chase

Ever find out what the movie was?

I remember being Orlando in 1995 at Universal Studios. I was there afterhours and attending a ceremony. When we left we wee told to leave quietly because they were filming a boat chase on the lake. Couldn't see it, but definitely heard the boats. Never did find out the movie.

I didn't find out the movie. I did an internet search of what might be filming during that time, but found nothing. It was September 2022 when I was there

No reason why Ireland shouldn't be in a Bond movie its a beautiful country with some great locations. Ethan Hunt was in Belfast at the start of MI: Fallout and Haywire was filmed in Dublin. The IRA should not form part of a Bond movie. Bond works best when not based on real world politics. TND is a great movie but the Afghanistan section is an now uneasy watch giving the changed situation since it was made.

Ireland could always double for another country.

Ireland doubled as Britain in John Boorman's Excalibur. Fantastic film.

Ireland doubled for Scotland in Braveheart.

I'm sure Ireland doubling for Britain in a Bond film would really please the Irish Republican parties like Sinn Fein!

They're politicians, they love money more than ideology.

Well, that's true. And I'm no fan of Sinn Fein, believe me.

I may be wrong, but I doubt Gerry Adams and the other Sinn Fein are rich. Irish member of AJB are welcome to say if I'm wrong. I'm very far from a Sinn Fein supporter, but I actually think ideology is more important than money to them.

And so politics makes it into yet another topic

But what did they spend the money on? Villas with swimming pools? Hollidays in Spain? Semtex? AK-47s from Libya? I really want to know.

They like to give the impression that they're on a "worker's wage" and are Marxist-Leninist in outlook. We'll not mention the Northern Bank Robbery of 2004 though.

They were never someone I looked up to in any way, so I can't say I'm disappointed.

I think 'owned property' tells you where the money was going. You never go poor buying houses in the UK.

In politics there is the image or the perception and then there is the reality and the two very rarely ever marry up completely.

As Sir Miles suggested above, can we drop the politics please?

  • Napoleon PluralNapoleon Plural LondonPosts: 11,027MI6 Agent

I will, but only a bit. Recent scripts have always had a snarky reference to Bond's imperialistic history when he's in iffy locations but to do this as an aside in an Irish location with 007 himself present would leave a sour taste, let's not forget Bond's 'licence to kill' and that he is a spy and all that, none of it very pleasant whichever side of the political spectrum you are on.

What is Ireland's role in the world today? It's hard to say. I mean, meeting a contact in Dublin is all very well but what's the pretext/context?

Have there been many mentions of imperialism in Bond films? Not saying you're wrong but I can't bring them to mind. I feel like Graves might've said something maybe?

  • BarbelBarbel ScotlandPosts: 41,823Chief of Staff

Graves when he was Col Moon "It's pathetic that you British still think you have the right to police the world"

Mr Chang (hotel manager) "Hong Kong's our turf now, Bond"

But seriously, I think it wouldn't take much to start trouble in this thread so it's being closed.
