A fairly serious question from a guy in the States...

Western Mass, USAPosts: 9,104MI6 Agent
in Bond 26
How in blo*dy he!l am I to properly enjoy the next Bond film while real-life Bond villains working for the Kremlin are in control of my country? And seeing as that next movie will be produced by a U.S. based company that will not want to anger said real-life Bond villains, how will YOU??
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

Umm, that's not very much an eloquent or analytical reply... though I do get the general sense of humorous disapproval...

It is simple amigo, we are all here to share in our passion for Bond, not in your political views
Not 'views' sir, how American Neo-fascism will affect our new Bond films, which will affect our passion for Bond projects in general.

Bond survived Watergate. I know it's not directly comparable, but still. It's also fully possible to make a good Bond movie without the opinions or actions of the people in power in Washington being an issue.
Well, you'll just have to accept the fact that truth is stranger than fiction. 3 years and 2 days ago everybody in Finland thought that hybrid threat was all we had to worry about, and fictive works were all about terrorists and spies, not about traditional brute force war.... Slava Ukraini!

It’s an understandable fear, your country is in freefall.
As much as we don’t like it some of this will affect Bond as it is so big and so visibly linked to Amazon, and the tech companies are aligning themselves so closely with your new king. Would Tomorrow Never Dies have happened if 20th Century Fox had bought Bond?
Well, to answer the OP, he has a point but I should say that the Bond films only used real-life events in the world as a backdrop, never the main event. In the 1960s, the Cold War was thawing a bit so they didn't have Russia as the main villains - in From Russia With Love they dabbled with it but the main villains turn out to be Spectre, masquerading as the KGB.
In this way, the Bond films avoid being hostage to changing world events.
It is however unfortunate when real-life events appear more Bondian, with larger than life villains than the sort you see in a Bond movie. Bond was offscreen a bit when 9/11 happened (though not as offscreen as he is nowadays) so they sort of dodged that or fudged the issue with the next one, Die Another Day. When Vietnam raged in the early 70s and the West was in depression, the Bond films didn't reflect that but became more fanciful, fun and lovely to look at.
In theory, if Bond is made by an American company, they could even set part of the next one in Moscow or St Petersburg as part of Trump's detente but the villains wouldn't be Putin's mob but independent villains. EON never really filmed much over there (the GoldenEye tank chase was on the Pinewood lot), something of an oversight given The Bourne Supremacy made good use of a car chase in Moscow.
The Craig locations and the look of his films seemed all a bit samey to me, compared to other actors' Bond films. Maybe Amazon can change that for a start, but it is also determined by what parts of the world they are allowed to film, and how much it costs, and how much they are prepared to bribe the local police or authorities for permission to film there.
Roger Moore 1927-2017
The GoldenEye tank chase did have several parts shot in St Petersberg. All of the stuff by the river most notably.
I hope Amazon will have the imagination to use a broader selection of locations and spend the money to actually go there.
My biggest fear is that Amazon will crank out Flint-like Bond movies that will make Never Say Never Again look like a true masterpiece....

Considering your fears at the top of the thread that doesn't seem the worst thing which could happen!
Well, I'm just talking about the Bond movies now... but if the whole country goes into Constitutional crisis & an unending martial law gets imposed or something new Bond movies will certainly be pushed back a number of years... if they are produced at all....

Yes, it's possible. After all those years he spent fighting the Russians now it feels like he's joined them.
That, or the "the far right not getting it" section. But I don't think this thread will end well, so I think the discussion should be moved to the PMs.
We're not ignoring this thread, but so far it seems within reasonable limits. We won't hesitate to close it if that changes.
I fear this is what happens when you consume too much Bond, you're foreign policy outlook is inherently in the realm of fantasy land.
The great thing about BondClothing's post is that anyone can interpret it as aimed at whoever they disagree with. Outstanding! 👍️
If it does get out of hand, I would expect it to be closed. But I was meaning it to be directly about future Bond movies in light of the current state of affairs and ownership of production rights. I just don't see a new Bond movie coming out soon, or of any kind of quality until some rather large things get sorted....

Bond movies shouldn't be about current conflicts. The movies can acknowledge the political conflucts, but not be about them. If Amazon choses to promote some political agenda it will be a problem. In that case we deal with if and when it happens. No need for doom and gloom at this time.
Oh, I fully expect real world to be avoided at all costs by Amazon. To the point of Flint-type comic book nonsense. I mean, how would Elliot Carver have financed a movie about Bond??? "He may fight Jaws again, but not a genius like me! NOT ME!!!" 😁

[I guess I’m not particularly eloquent, but my commenting on this at length - especially in an analytical sense - pretty much guarantees a Thanos-snap of this thread, so…you’re welcome]

Very much just views, Italy has had fascism, many countries in Latin América too, not the USA. As 007 said, "Let's not get too heated, shall we?"
In fact, all of us are worried Amazon has the IP's creative control especially because of the agendas they push and just terrible handling of beloved franchises. Bond is the definition of escapism; beautiful women and cars, perfectly dressed, license to kill, second to none, gentleman spy. No true Bond fan wants anything other than that.
Greetings from Mexico
😁 Maybe, maybe not. Some people just like playing red indians when they're not there.
Rings of Power is proof they will not. Sad, but it is inevitable now that they have full creative control of 007. They only had the rights to Tolkien's notes... and look at that dumpster fire
That's what I meant about 20th C Fox not having been likely to make TND: there are certain types of villains it's hard to imagine Bond going near now because they're the ones having to be pleased by the output of the state. Free speech as long as it doesn't criticise us.
Bond rarely battled actual other nations so Russia isn't any further out of the question than usual, although I guess we're unlikely to see anything making them look weak like rogue Russian weapons etc. as we might have seen previously.
I don't think the situation is likely to get to the point where the film won't get made though.
Were the locations the main problem with Rings of Power?
Amazon's interpretation of Bond may very well stink on a creative level but I'm going to keep an open mind.
Amazon has made some very good shows recently. The Boys is a raunchy send up of the superhero genre with some biting social and political commentary. Fallout was a very faithful and surprisingly well written adaptation of the videogame series. I know opinions are divided on The Rings of Power but there's no denying that Amazon put the money into it and personally it held my attention and had some great performances.
I'll be content to sit back and observe until we get some concrete info on the show runners and cast.
Okay, and they DID finish off The Expanse very well (but that creative team was in place from SYFY...). But keep in mind this was all before Bezos decided to make nice-nice with the new administration. I for one would be horrified to see a film where Bond leaves MI6 to help create a License To Kill branch of the new & improved CIA....
