The Pink Panther is a good film ๐Ÿ˜

I had quite a few Matchbox cars too, used to buy most of them from a secondhand shop.

    I'm with you @CoolHandBond, I can’t stand Turkish Delight either ๐Ÿ˜–

    Top Deck shandy…that I DID like ๐Ÿคฃ

I still like Eurovision today ๐Ÿคญ

    I don’t think I’ve watched Eurovision in 40-odd years!

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

I’ve missed one in over 40 years ๐Ÿคฃ

That was last years because I was working ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

It's cheesy and ridiculous at times, but there have been some great songs down the years.

    For those in the know…

I like blancmange and butterscotch, never heard of Highland Toffee, perhaps it was only sold in Scotland (Barbel may know of it?)…

I’d forgotten about this one, it was quite nice and fruity…

Like 31-year old Babs was playing a schoolgirl in Carry On Camping (is this ever aired on television nowadays in todays PC climate?)

Old money…at junior school I got a “Bob” (one shilling) a week pocket money and more if I washed the car and other chores. When I saw my uncle he used to give me half a crown - he’s 85 now and I video call him once a month, he was a live wire when he was young and still is today ๐Ÿ˜

A Double Diamond works wonders…or at least that’s what the advertising slogan told us…

Shut up!! Baked beans are off. ๐Ÿคฃ

I can still remember being at a cousins wedding and me and another cousin sneaking a couple of Double Diamond’s from the free bar…I was probably 10 ๐Ÿคฃ

    Love that Spam sketch!

Yes, Highland Toffee was certainly in the shops here. Don't know if it still is.

    And Carry On Camping ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…

  • CoolHandBondCoolHandBond Mactan IslandPosts: 9,339MI6 Agent

    That’s a great recollection @Sir Miles ๐Ÿ˜‚

Glad to see you and @Barbel both like the Spam sketch ๐Ÿ˜

We had Highland Toffee here too in NI but I believe it's been discontinued.

    Another Brighton pic...

You could get there from London Victoria.

    Travelling via East Croydon...

Enjoy an ice lolly in this hot weather.

    From London Victoria to…

    Victoria, Vancouver Island ๐Ÿ˜

Which is where I work ๐Ÿคฃ

I love that ice lolly ad ๐Ÿ˜ and the London Victoria picture is great, my dad had an Austin Cambridge in the 60’s.

The 2026 World Cup starts soon and delving back into past tournaments I’ve found an old photograph of Barbel supporting Scotland in 1978…

This was when the joke “home before the postcards” was coined as Scotland were dumped out of the tournament in the league stage…I know Barbel will be glued to the screen for every second of Scotland’s upcoming games ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ

Subbuteo launched a special World Cup edition…

Two Saturday editions of the Radio Times, four years apart 1966 and 1970 show that Grandstand and Dr Who were mainstays of the programming…

The rival to Grandstand on ITV was World of Sport which was hosted by the laid back and dapper Dickie Davies, much better than the stiff David Coleman and genial family man Frank Bough who was later exposed as a lover of S&M in sex dens and snorting lines (the BBC seems to have had quite a few dodgy celebrities on their books over the years).

There's more chance of me being the next James Bond than me watching a football game. ๐Ÿ˜

  • Sir MilesSir Miles The Wrong Side Of The WardrobePosts: 30,891Chief of Staff

The 1978 World Cup in Argentina was the first tournament I watched every game at…we were on holiday at Butlins…

I loved playing Subbuteo too ๐Ÿ˜

From the Radio Times 1970 edition I’d have seen Dr. Who…I remember the Val Doonican Show too, but that would be from later years.

    Ian Fleming’s great motor inventions…

The Banana Splits buggy was great - the show was essential viewing for kids in the late 60’s…

I loved (American) Cream Soda - Corona was a massive pop soda brand…

Frank was working hard in those days…

Famous faces at The Variety Club in 1971…

It took me a moment to spot the face in the bottom left corner!

I mention this at the drop of a hat: I've still got my Corgi Aston Martin, still in its box. I lost the little man who gets ejected but bought a replacement online.

At the time of that Copa engagement (3x nightly) Frank was also doing a radio show and possibly a movie. Not surprisingly he lost his voice altogether, and had to rest for a while.

I never had the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car, but a friend had it.

I didn’t have that version of the DB5 either, but I had several others versions and some limited editions of it…the emphasis being on the word ‘had’ there…ex-wives, huh? ๐Ÿ‘€

Absolutely LOVED the Banana Splits ๐Ÿคฃ

The Corona pop man would come round every two weeks in his van, he’d give you 10p back on the empty bottles ๐Ÿคฃ

Triumph and Norton - two great British brands…

Toffo- perfect for getting rid of fillings…

    Wimpy value 50 years ago…

Exchange & Mart was a great weekly newspaper where you could buy and sell products, and I used to advertise for book collections in there from time to time. At it’s peak it sold 350,000 copies weekly but by 2009 I was down to 21,000 and the doors were shut although it still survives online…

Get you lollies and ice creams here…

    I had Fuzzy Felt as a toddler…

And I had a few of these little plastic figures…

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.
  • BarbelBarbel ScotlandPosts: 41,849Chief of Staff

Yup, Toffo used to stick to your teeth all right.

I ate in a Wimpy once. Didn't like it much.

I suppose Exchange & Mart got replaced by eBay, like many things.

  • Sir MilesSir Miles The Wrong Side Of The WardrobePosts: 30,891Chief of Staff

Toffo always stuck to the roof of my mouth too ๐Ÿ™„

    I’m pretty certain I’ve never had a Wimpy ๐Ÿค”

But I’ve pretty much had all those lollies & ice creams ๐Ÿคฃ

As a teenager our local Wimpy used to serve as a meeting place for us schoolkids, we grabbed a burger before going on elsewhere.

  • Sir MilesSir Miles The Wrong Side Of The WardrobePosts: 30,891Chief of Staff

The town I’m from did have a Wimpy, in fact we had 2 ๐Ÿ˜

I remember clearly where one was but I can’t recall where the second location…they closed in the late 1980’s. For some reason they just never appealed…

    I hated both these sweets…

Corgi - Dinky - Matchbox were the three big toy car brands…

We had to use fountain pens in senior school and Quink was the ink of the day…

I remember the Esso Blue paraffin ads on the TV…

    This was NOT champagne ๐Ÿคฃ

A game I’ve never played, have I missed out?

1976 the long hot summer with everyone enjoying the sunshine…2026 we’re all gonna die!

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.
  • BarbelBarbel ScotlandPosts: 41,849Chief of Staff

Parma Violets yuck, but Refreshers were okay.

    Never played Twister either.

And never used a fountain pen!

  • Sir MilesSir Miles The Wrong Side Of The WardrobePosts: 30,891Chief of Staff

    I liked Refreshers too ๐Ÿ˜

We had to use fountain pens and blotting paper too for a year at school…

Definitely remember the Esso Blue ads ๐Ÿ˜

ever had Babycham or played Twister either…๐Ÿ‘€
