Propmakers forum?

Hi there.

Recently i mentioned this idea over in the 'micks golden gun' thread and it seemed to get a good reception,

so here i am putting before the admin, and see what we can come up with.

the idea is quite simple, to set up a separate dedicated section on the boards for propmakers like myself. subsections could include;

- Show and tell area for displaying finished items
- Technical assistance area for asking advice from fellow propmakers
- Research section for asking for and providing people with good sources of info

the idea behind this is that there are serveral people on these boards that know vital info on bond props. others are well experienced in things like machining etc. so in order to keep it all well structured and organised, maybe a dedicated section for it is what we need?

it'd also free up the exsisting merch and collecting section, which could be used soley for on screen objects you can buy off the shelf, such as products and clothing items. with prop making being a more specialist area, a dedicated section would stop requests for help getting lost under a load of discussion regarding clothes.

it'd also be a first i believe. although there are prop making forums, some don't have valuable members with vital knowledge. for instance, on a prop making forum, you might be able to find someone who could tell you how to professionally spray something, but they wouldn't be able to tell you what colour you need etc.

so there ya go, theres the idea, what does the admins think?

look forward to hearing from you on it,

MG

I'm not sure just when Si will be back to answer, so......

I know he's not usually in favour of more forums, so I'm not convinced he'll go for that. How about opening a couple (or three) new threads and we can sticky them so that they are always at the top of the Memorabilia & Collecting Forum ?

We could always more....an I'm selling on ebay and or a Currently on ebay threads ?

Please feel free to comment and to add your own ideas.....

I always enter the site via "New Posts" so I only very rarely look over the various specialty forums. From my POV, a sticky would serve just as well.

There are lots of fans out there making their own props - I even indulge myself on ocassion. But my main concern in threads of this sort has been "manners". We are all talented in different ways - I really hate to see some kid with a cardboard version of the "Goldfinger" homer post his work and get mocked and teased out of the forum.

We have some very well respected professional members here. So whatever is done with this idea, I hope that in the future some good manners will be observed.

i think the sticky idea could be a start miles.

I've not been here for long, but I've never seen someone being more than a certain point disrespectful to another member. I'm sorry to hear that, especially when someone actually BUILDS something. I could never, in a million years, build even a crappy version of a Golden Gun. Even if it looked like real crap, I mean, I wouldn't say it. I'd let those who know their stuff help him.

Just so you Guys know, I did what I did for a Reason, under normal circumstances I would never criticize, and I always give credit where credit is due.

So I'm sorry if you think I'm bad mannered and have offended you.

Perhaps in future you either take your 'reason' to PM or get in contact with a MOD about it. I don't think we need to trouble the rest of the board with it.

    Thanks.

i understand what you're saying miles, but if someone points out an error, or a fault with someone's work, pm'ing the maker about it doesn't benefit anyone else.

the whole idea about a propmakers forum would be to benefit all. remember that he who never made a mistake, never made anything.

i think the main point to make here is how criticism is delivered.

its ok people saying 'yeah i think we've heard enough of this' but i'd rather everyone put their cards on the table, be honest and get the issue resolved instead of keep it all hidden away via pm and leaving us all wondering what came of the situation.

to kinda put it to rest for now, i think mick has learnt many valuable lessons, and sadly its taken for it to get to how it did in order for him to really take note.

lets just hope we all continue to share our work and learn from everyones experiences.

well there were certain aspects of mick's golden gun like legalities, and acknowledgement of people's help that took a while for mick to take note of.

i think people tried gently steering mick in the right direction, and with the hints going unacknowledged, some people lost patience.

    lessons learnt all round.

Which is really the point I was trying to aim at - and, obviously, somewhat missing :))

Of course it's easier to let the board know, so everybody can benefit - but in the case you mentioned a few of 'us' were reading the thread 'blind' - and it didn't make for 'nice' reading. I guess a quick PM (either to or from me) could have helped. We live and learn indeed.

No word from 'up on high' - guess they don't read here very often :))

I can make an executive decision though (though how long I'll stay an 'executive' if I get it wrong I'm not sure :)) ).

Let me know what you want the thread(s) to be called and I'll take it from there.

    Nice one miles.

Well i'm not sure what to call it, trying to think of an idea to condence it into one title.

Erm, Prop/model makers thread, show and tell, help and advice is the best i can come up with. :s

    any ideas anyone else?

Prop/Model Makers, sounds good to me. :)
  • Sir MilesSir Miles The Wrong Side Of The WardrobePosts: 27,630Chief of Staff
Do you want two threads though ? One for 'Show & Tell' and one for 'Advice' ?

I still think we need one for 'e-bay' - or two ?
    YNWA 97
  • minigeffminigeff EnglandPosts: 7,884MI6 Agent
Well i dont wanna flood out the forums with threads, but to simplify it, we could have 'Show and tell', 'advise and research help' and possibly 'item for sale on ebay'.

we could say use the ebay one for all items, but i'd like to keep the other two just for props as the prop stuff always seems to get knocked down the list by clothes items.

Sorry - I had meant to PM you about this matter, just been very busy at work. So, for not PMing you - I'm sorry ;%

There are a couple of 'things' that need to be clarified - and this idea was discussed a little further, and in doing so, time drags on...I had to make sure that anybody whom wanted to add anything further (mods and CoS) had had the time to do so.

Again, I apologise for not letting you know.
