approaching James Bond island

HigginsHiggins GermanyPosts: 16,618MI6 Agent
As I am mostly here in the mem&coll. forum, I wanted to advertise my first article on AJB about the James Bond island from TMWTGG.

As it is important wearing the correct clothing, sunglasses, watch and gun, it can't be wrong to actually be on the real place, too.

Enjoy!

Just been reading this Markus - some great photos there and when I eventually get over there, I'll take the trail you suggested.

    Thanks, Disco.

If you need aditional infos, just let me know.

Phuket in paricular is a very nice place to stay and the image in the UK does not do the island justice.

You may find some crowded beaches with a lot of nightlife and bars in the Patong area (seems a bit like El Arenal/Mallorca), but if you are looking for silence, you'll find some very remote and clean places there, too.

    I can only recommend !

I am getting spoiled....yesterday over coffee I read Donald Grants incredible watch article and then this morning Bondtoys travel story.

Bondtoys, I loved your story and was always fascinated with this area. Thank you for your Bondian view of this MUST SEE destination. BTW, curiosity is making me ask what they were selling in the shops on the island. Any thing Bond related...a wood carved Nik Nak?

    hello Mantis,

how could you ask such a question to a Bond nut??

Are you seriously thinking, that I have wasted my precious time to look over all the crap that they are selling there? :p

From what I smelled, when passing by, I would say dried fish and other delicatessen.

After asking my wife :v I can tell you, that they are selling fresh soft drinks, cheap pearl jewellery and some souvenirs with pics of the mushroom rock and other sights. You could also buy some wooden crap like masks and plates.

To tell you the truth, I have spent 5 minutes until the rangers did not watch me to grab a bag of sand from Scaramanga's beach ;% accompanied by some very angry faces from my wife. :D

The shape of the wooden carved elephants has changed since 1975, we have found these in Bangkok, good fridge magnets (ask Asp9mm, Remmert and Paul 8-)) can be found at the airport in Phuket city.

We can do a competition here:

The first one to id my wife on the 5th pic will receive a FREE James Bond island fridge magnet!

    1. hint: No, it's not the ehm... larger butt in the foreground
    2. hint: She's wearing sunglasses

Asp9mm is excluded from the competition as he knows, how she looks like.
And he has a fridge magnet anyhow... - but with a different motive :))

Great article, by the way. :)

    An very interesting and well written article Bondtoys as it is somewhere I hope to go in the future. Well done. Sounds like you had a fine time and have some wonderful memories.-{

Your information on Scaramanga's beach was particularly useful. (and excellent photos by the way).

When travelling abroad it is always helpful to get the lay of the land from those who have experience of ones destination. I wonder if others who have travelled to far flung Bond locations could post advice for future Bond travellers along with their experiences.
An rough idea of local costs, best places to visit, stay and eat etc I find first hand advice is often better than that found in impersonal guidebooks.

Thanks Panache for the detailled feedback.

Here an idea, how Phuket looks like for us:

I have started to pull my infos regarding my visit to Akime, Tokyo and Kagoshima in Japan together, maybe, I'll write another report.

Problem is, that it is 8 yrs ago and I have only had a digital video cam with me, so, pics will be difficult.

And maybe in fall, it will time to do a Cortina report. We have been staying in a small guesthouse and I have been torturing our hosts with my portable DVD player to find the correct trails.

So, you guys see, that my wife is suffering much more than only me taking pics of other women's bottoms :D

My guess is that Markus' wife is the one standing on the cement (stone?) wall just under the edge of the hut with her back to him...sort of with hands on hips...wearing short skirt and bikini top. Can't miss the one I'm talking about...she looks like she's on the FYEO poster.

Markus, did I guess right on your Bond girl?

:D You are almost right :D

The girl you mention is future Mrs. Markus, when present Mrs. Markus gets fed up with travelling with him only to Bond locations :D
