So emphasizing this fact and repeating it on and on is simply marketing - nothing more and nothing less!
It does not make him a better actor and the others less.

If he did, he never showed it on screen. In a quote attributed to him in IMDB, he allegedly said that Bond is just "a great big comic strip". He even suggested that it was silly to take Bond too seriously. That tells you how seriously he was taking it ... 8-)

    Could've fooled me.

    3. The line of command for changing the direction of a movie series does not start with the main actor!
Usually that decision is done by the producers, then they brief the screenwriters and the director, the main roles are casted according to these orders and the main actor has to play what they are telling him.
He certainly does not tell a director or a producer what he plays or not!

Directors, producers, writers etc all play to the actor's strengths. If Dalton had been Bond in the 1970s they wouldn't have done that, because Dalton would've looked uncomfortable (and therefore unnatural) in that sort of a role. Yes, they may have wanted Bond to go down that direction (which is a damn shame), but they hired Moore to play the character because Moore can pull off a "funny" Bond better than any other actor who have played him.
Handsome, yes, but dangerous? Not really!

    Agreed.

To me, Moore never looked like he could kill someone. He never looked "dangerous" in the way that the literary Bond did, or in the same way that Connery or Dalton did. In both appearance and mannerism, Moore was the consummate gentleman, in complete contrast to the cruel and dangerous looks of the literary Bond.

Thank you, Sir Miles, for saving me the trouble. I absolutely agree that we should celebrate the diversity of opinions about the Bond films, the Bond actors, the Bond girls, etc. Anyone who is familiar with my posts knows that I am a huge Connery and Craig fan, and I think Dalton was a terrific Bond as well. I have a soft spot for some of the lower rated films, such as YOLT and DAF. I didn't hate Madonna's title song for DAD and I think Halle Berry is one of the hottest of all Bond girls. These are just examples of opinions I have that aren't necessarily widely shared. However, it's not a problem for me when other Bond fans disagree because I realize that different opinions are what this forum is all about. Sure, if someone puts down one of my faves I might offer a defense, but that's not the same as expressing outrage that someone disagrees with me. And I have absolutely no problem with those who vehemently support their favorites (and besides, even if I did have a problem with it, why should anyone care?) So let me try to clear up any misunderstanding. I am a James Bond film fan through and through. Every Bond film featuring every Bond actor is in my collection in several different formats, and I have watched them all several dozen times (that includes AVTAK, by the way) I wouldn't be here among you if I wasn't such a fan. I might rub some folks the wrong way with my put downs of their favorites, which I try to do in a light-hearted way and sometimes completely in jest. If you are offended by that, it is certainly not my intention to offend. So take it easy, folks, we're all friends here. Right?

Having just read The Scarlet Pimpernel, in the UK I'd say we have a tradition of the lazy, complacent looking fop who nonetheless outsmarts Johnny Foreigner, and Moore fit right into that. Not a universal taste, I'll admit.

Moore was actually the first choice for Bond before Connery took the Role.

I've heard varying reports of this. However, check out this excerpt from John Glen's book For My Eyes Only:

"Cubby told me that Fleming had always seen Roger Moore as James Bond and took a while to be won over by Sean Connery.
Fleming's Bond was something of an upper crust figure, a former public schoolboy with a taste for the finer things in life. Sean Connery had enjoyed incredible success in the role -- partly because he introduced a rough element which co-existed with Fleming's characterization- but Roger's interpretation was probably a little closer to what Fleming had in mind."

thanks for the link. However, i found the opposite to be true regarding both your statements. there was plenty of Roger Moore- era clips including opening the montage with Zorin's death from AVTAK and closing with the ski jump from TSWLM.

As for the editing, it was god awful. There was no real structure and the theme music rarely matched the film clips. Did a high school student put these together at random? The OHMSS title song kicks in during the Moonraker PTS scene? Baffling. Are they implying Zorin was #50 and the ski jump was #1? Beats me! And I would hardly consider M's lecture in Goldeneye anywhere near the top 50.

However, another IGN video Top 007 Coldest Bond Kills was much better conceived.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VRfLxfzGGY&feature=endscreen&NR=1

and since this is a Roger Moore thread you will all be delighted to know that he had two appearances at 5th (FYEO) and 3rd (TSWLM)

    My own thoughts:

Killing Professor Dent should have been #1.

Shooting Stromberg in cold blood at the dinner table should have been included on the list.

Both Brosnan moments were spot on. Great scenes.

Casino Royale...he gets shot with a silenced pistol and it topples him backwards out of the chair? lol even if it was a .44 magnum the bullet still wouldn't blow him backwards. The bullet would pass through the body instantly and he would slump over dead most likely.

Roger is a co-producer (along with his son Geoffrey) of the new Saint TV pilot episode being filmed currently, in which he has a cameo role. He is also involved in a proposed film entitled Connemara Days, a story centred around the village of Cong in rural Ireland in 1951 when The Quiet Man was being filmed. The Quiet Man starred John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara.

    from wikipedia:

In 2004 Moore was voted 'Best Bond' in an Academy Awards poll, and he won with 62% of votes in another poll in 2008.

    from entertainmentwise.com Oct 2012

    http://www.entertainmentwise.com/news/89740/Roger-Moore-The-Best-Bond-Of-All-Time

Incredibly the actor took two thirds of the vote, beating Craig and Connery into third and second respectively, with the original James edging out Daniel with 12% to 10%.

It's a relative shock, although Britt Ekland recently named Moore, her co-star in 'The Man With The Golden Gun' as her all time favourite 007.

Predictably one time Bond George Lazenby, and 80s spy Timothy Dalton failed to register, while Pierce Brosnan sat in fourth with 6%.

Roger Moore is by far my favorite Bond and The Spy Who Loved Me, my favorite Bond film. Of course, I know that is because TSWLM was the first Bond film I ever saw as a kid, but watching it even now as an adult, the appeal is still there. The larger-than-life villains, all the gadgets (and the Lotus....the best Bond car ever!)and the snazzy one-liners just come together to form one of the most over-the-top spy films ever made and IMO has yet to be surpassed.

Nick, I wouldn't put too much faith in that entertainmentwise survey. It didn't even say how many votes were counted? The Academy Award poll 2004 and 2008 sounds pretty legit however.
