    James Bond sat behind the wheel of his sports car, it was very nice and
    could go really fast. The nasty man in a van drove up firing a big gun. Bond
    Turned and fired his gun, which was much better than the bad man's.
    "Oh", the bad man called as Bond shot him, quickly Bond ran across and knocked
    The gun from the bad mans hand. " you are not very nice and very bad " said Bond.
    Bond's girlfriend ran over and gave him a kiss. The end.

    There you go, Thriller gold there. ;)

    Ah yes ! I can see the hidden symbolism in your use of " Bread and Milk" to
    Represent home comforts or " Old Britain" with his " taking them home" his
    Job of protecting them. -{ very well done. Will Poisoned Chalice, be the title. ;)

    As a matter of interest has anyone read any if his Alex Rider books ?
    I think it's funny that he wrote a series of successful teen spy stories,
    Which I'm sure helped bring about the Young Bond books and now he
    Is getting a chance to write a Bond novel, which helped start the whole
    Modern spy genre ! :D It's like one of those "Time Paradox " things from
    Science Fiction stories.

    The 50s setting ( if true) , I wonder if this might be not only because
    Of the unused Fleming notes etc but also in an nostalgic throw back
    To a happier time for Britain.
    Having re-read the Fleming books, it is almost like a warm blanket to
    Read about Britain being a world power (Equal partners with America).
    Having real control of world events, unlike our place in today's world
    As mainly just a minor member of the EU. ?

    Even when Fleming was writing the novels, Britain's status as a world power had grossly diminished. That was the cost of winning WW2. The Suez crisis in the 50s showed how much Britain's power/status/influence had suffered.
    Amis makes the point that Bond's adventures were wish-fulfillment for a needy UK public- Chapter 9 of his "Dossier" goes into detail on this. Fleming provided a warm blanket when it was needed. And, perhaps, it still is.
  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,792MI6 Agent
    The 50s in general seem to have been also a more hopeful time.
    After the drudgery of the 40s ( for obvious reasons) . Also given
    Horowitz's past writing with a younger spy, I was thinking might
    This Book be a sort of set up novel, Bond before he got his " 00"
    Status, not as a teen spy but expanding on an earlier mission ?

    Oh dear, I hope not. That ground has been covered. Just a straightforward 007 adventure- there will never be enough of those!
  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,792MI6 Agent
    :)) I'm just mulling over a few ideas, I too would prefer a straightforward
    Bond novel.............. But if it turns out to be a setup story. You heard it hear
    First. :)) and I've discovered my secret power. :D

    The Idea of a Bond before his 00 Status, ala CR 06 but in Novel Form is interesting. Fleming covered this in CR but a full Novel based on those Events could be a good Idea -{

    I think there's zero chance of a CR prequel, a lit how Bond became Bond.

    The movie went down that route - with varying degrees of success - and a novel would be instantly compared with that. For better or worse.

    I wonder if anyone would be interested in another book of short stories.
    Detailing perhaps Bond's war experiences ? Perhaps asking several
    Contemporary writers to contribute, a sort of ....
    " Memoirs from a golden pen " :)

    Anthony Horowitz has confirmed on Twitter that the novel will not be called 'Murder on Wheels' but that a chapter in the novel will be called this (most likely the chapter containing the Fleming material). This ties with what Barbel said above (that the novel will not be called 'Murder on Wheels'). Horowitz also said that he only got four words of the new Bond novel written with all of the fuss of yesterday's announcement hitting the media, meaning that he is actually still writing the novel. I'd certainly advise interested members to follow Mr Horowitz on Twitter if they have not already done so in order that they may hear all the latest news on Project One. -{

    I also read in The Times last night that Fleming's grand niece said that Fleming's original TV script treatment entitled 'Murder on Wheels' would be included as an appendix to the novel if fans so desired so let me add my voice to the campaign to make this so as this would be a Bond fan's dream come true - to read a new Fleming Bond piece - for the first time since November 1999 when forgotten Fleming short story '007 in New York' came in The Sunday Times Magazine. :) -{

    Indeed. Especially the part about including Ian Fleming's 'Murder on Wheels' as an appendix/extra to the novel itself. Hopefully this will happen if enough of us Bond fanatics clamor for it from the rooftops! :))

    Plus, glad to see that this topic was made a Sticky by a kindly mod. Thanks, whoever that was! :) -{

    Thanks SM for keeping us up to date. I'm off now to Twitter to follow Mr Horowitz, and am also hoping that the Fleming treatment will be included.

    Not quite true, SM, is it? If a Bond fan had wanted to read read 007 in New York they could have done so as far back as 1964 when it was published in the US edition of the THRILLING CITIES.

    Will be interested in MURDER ON WHEELS - IF original version - to compare with Horowitz, if it comes about...

    Don't forget they already covered this in great detail in John Pearsons Bond novel.

    Perfectly true, though my point was after the Craig Bond cinematic reboot with CR and "Bond becoming Bond" we would be unlikely to see that now for fear of comparison so soon after.

    Then again, much of Pearson's very early stuff was "paraphrased/remade" by Charlie Higson. :)

    That was what I meant by "forgotten" as in it had been published before but that was not to mind in 1999 in Britain at least. I could have been clearer there, sorry - 1999 was the first time I had heard of the story anyhow. But yes, it was originally published in the American edition of Fleming's Thrilling Cities as an apologia for Fleming's harsh comments on New York in the travel book (and nothing more really) as Bond obviously enjoyed the city more than his creator did! In effect it was a sop to the American public.

    I'm a fan of Foyle's War and I've read and liked both House of Silk and some of the Alex Rider novels, so this is great news indeed!
    I also like that it's set in the 50's, Solo showed us some of the horrors of a contemporary Bond.

    ??? But "Solo" wasn't contemporary, Number24, it was set in the late 60s.
