Very disappointed Thomas Newman is doing the Spectre score

i don't mind if Arnold never comes back, provided we end up with a composer who writes scores that are actually enjoyable listening experiences in their own right. I can pop in almost any non-Newman Bond soundtrack on album and listen to it and be engaged by the music on its own, enjoy the themes, orchestrations etc. whereas Newman's music only has any effectiveness in the context of the film. There are moments which stand up on their own, but these are few and far between...much too far for a Bond score!

I have the opposite reaction, I quite like the SF and SP soundtracks while listening in the car etc but I seriously think that they detract from the enjoyment of the film. I find them mostly lethargic in context of the film especially SP. I'd even go so far as to say I think SP would have more positive reactions with an Arnold esque soundtrack behind it.
It was either that.....or the priesthood

I think the Spectre score was the worst Bond score since Goldeneye, and I'm a huge fan of the SF score. But the majority of SP is rehashed material and whats not rehashed sounds incredibly forgettable. I only really liked the PTS music and the Q lab music.

My gripe is Barry's music is never background music. For me, it's as part of the identity of Bond as are the locations, the stunts, the actors. I wouldn't have the same thoughts about other franchises, but Bond music is very important to me and Barry (unfortunately?) set a very high bar

I would even go far as to say Serra no longer is my least favourite composer.

Michel Legrand is a fantastic composer, and he hasn't ruined any Bond films.

No, you're quite right: that film didn't need his help to be ruined!

After viewing SPECTRE last nigh with my trusty headphones on I have to say Newman's score was actually quite to my liking. Bond theme a bit underused, but overall not bad at all IMO.
    It grew on me. -{

Mirrors my own feelings, not the best but not the worst score, with a few
    very good tracks. :)

With the exception of a small number of Tracks, I was disappointed with Newman's score, as I was with Skyfall's. It just feels too quiet and themeless. It's restrained use of the Bond theme is also bothersome. I missed the days where the James Bond theme would explode in the middle of an action scene.

I thought the soundtrack to SPECTRE was adequate for the film but not particularly memorable in any way. In other words, it was like 90% of film scores these days.

Unfortunately, your notion of "themeless" film music has pretty much become the norm in modern movies. Very rarely does a composer compose a film score with actual themes that stay with you. Instead, they choose to just use the music track to evoke a mood via obscure, quickly forgotten passages or popular songs inserted into the scene.

Just think about the memorable and instantly recognizable themes for movies like Richard Donner's Superman, Tim Burton's first Batman or Ennio Morricone's spaghetti westerns and compare them to modern films like Man of Steel or Nolan's Batman films. You'll see that, barring a few exceptions here or there, film music has just evolved into a far less thematically oriented format.

Yeah it's a shame really. It's like composers aren't trying anymore. I'm sure that's not the case in all of them. There have been some recent movies that have a pretty good scores. The Avengers, Kingsman, Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation have had pretty good memorable scores. For Spectre's score in general there were some big moments where Newman could have used the Bond theme to great effect. (The plane chase for one and more of the Rome Car chase.) In fact the score is pretty lazy to me being mostly a redo of Skyfall. I'm just sick of the full Bond theme being reserved for the credits now. It's annoying, I want to see it used during action scenes and somber Bond moments. Heck a theme for Blofeld would have been nice too. It was just weak. It feels like he didn't really care. I'd honestly want David Arnold back or Joe Kraemer to take over the composer's chair. Then we'd get some fresh worthy music.

There were a few missed opportunities in SP for Newman to unleash the full blown Bond theme that could've really elevated some scenes, the plane chase in particular which has generic action movie music.

I completely agree. The finale could have used more exciting music as well. Bigger music could have made the finale feel grander.

My first time attempting a rescore. I rescored the Spectre Car chase and Train fight using music from 007 Everything or Nothing.

You know what, i saw it in cinemas and quite enjoyed it. The film has grown on me more and more on Blu Ray on subsequent viewings. HOWEVER, its the first time as a LIFE LONG film buff that i actually sat there today and thought the action in this movie, including the opening and the finale was fantastic but why did it feel so flat, boring and uneventful. Its the first time ive actually notice that a Music Score had really lowered the colours of the film. The music didnt match the visuals. Spectre looked fantastic and i thought the action, acting and story was quite good. I really think the soundtrack let it down...

I share your thoughts on the score, I may have liked the film more if it had a better score. It really hindered some of the action scenes. There were a few missed opportunities to blast the Bond theme in all its glory.

I did not make this, but only found this on youtube.
Someone re-scored the train fight scene with John Barry Music from Thunderball. I must say. I really enjoyed it!

The Barry Score, how great it sounds, wouldn't have worked in the context in the movie I guess. That 'silence' makes it more hard hitting as all you hear is Craig getting the sh*t kicked out of him.

I agree. That was the best scene in the film because Thomas Newman left much of it alone. But then Newman ruined the tension at the end with his trite action music.

But I also think the Thunderball music still worked very well with the scene. When Newman's music replaces it later the excitement is considerably diminished.
