Umberto Eco has died at the age of 84. He's probably most famous for his novel The Name of the Rose, but he was also a great literary scholar--one of the earliest to take Ian Fleming's James Bond seriously. RIP.

Umberto Eco was a great author. The Name of the Rose and Baudolino are among my favourites.

Very sad news - he was certainly a great Bond scholar and I believe the inventor of the term 'Bondoloigist' which I've latterly latched onto!

Sad to hear of the death of Prof. Keith Jeffery. He was one of my History lecturers at the University of Ulster, Coleraine. He also wrote the official history of MI6 up to 1949. Obituary in today's Times.

Saddened to learn that Magician Paul Daniels has been diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour.
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-35621313

Love him or hate him, He was the face of magic on television for years and as a former
amateur magician myself, he was such a highly skilled manipulator, and in my opinion
always entertaining ( unlike some modern magicians)
I still have several packs of his playing cards, I'm certain he introduced the world of magic
    to several generations.

Very sad to hear this - Paul and Debbie were a great act and I had the pleasure of seeing them in a show in London many years ago.

RIP Frank. Fr Jack is one of my favourite characters. One of my favourite episodes is when Father Ted tries to teach him to say more than one word. He gives up and ends up saying "DRINK!"

Apparently it's 18 years to the day since the death of Dermot Morgan ( Fr Ted ) an odd
    coincidence.

RIP Sir George Martin....besides the obvious greatness of his work for The Beatles, his soundtrack for Live And Let Die has always been a firm favourite of mine.

Sad to hear of the death of Sir George Martin. His score for LALD was a highlight of the film and his work as the producer of The Beatles is the stuff of legend.

RIP Sir George Martin - possibly the greatest producer of recorded music ever, to say nothing of his scoring talents. One need only listen to the instrument-only version of Eleanor Rigby...the string quartet gives one chills. Like the Beatles, there'll never be another of his calibre.
