Bond 25 Director

With Mendes stepping down, who would you like to see direct Bond 25?

I've had a few directors in mind:

Martin Campbell - revived the franchise twice with CR and GE, so after the mixed reception of SP, he seems like a good choice.

Matthew Vaughn - From Kingsman, he seems to understand the Bond formula and would be good for a Connery style Bond film in the modern era.

Christopher Nolan - He has said OHMSS is one of his favourite films, and he does like to use practical effects, but he's not really the best for an action film - he's known for using too much shaky cam and his action stuff is considered a weak point of the Dark Knoght trilogy. Plus, he's just started another big project, so it may be a while before he is free.

Russo Brothers - Considering their work with Capt. America, in creating a political spy thriller, they'd be perfect for a film like FRWL. They'd even be good for a film featuring SPECTRE; their treatment of Hydra in Winter Soldier is pretty good. Like Nolan, these guys are basically booked by Marvel until nearly the end of the decade, as they're directing the next two Avengers films, so it would be a long wait, with them probably not being free until 2018.

Steven Soderbergh - I loved the style of direction in the Oceans trilogy, where he brings a retro sense to a film set in modern times, and perfectly balances comedy into the films.

Alex Garland - The director of Ex Machina, so far his only film, but I think he could bring a unique style to Bond. And considering he has bought back Oscar Isaac for his next project, could we already have a potential villain actor?

Christopher Nolan is too ambitious for Bond. Inception he said was his love letter to Bond with many nods to OHMSS in particular. SF is essentially a Christopher Nolan Bond film anyway.

Christopher Nolan would be a great Bond director :007)

I would also like to see:

David Yates (Harry Potter, State of Play) direct a Bond film. He can handle drama, action and humor -but also a huge production.

Joe Wright (Atonement, Hannah, Anna Karenina)

Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire, 28 days later, 127 Hours)

Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code, Warcraft)

James March (Man on Wire, Theory of Everything)

Steve McQeen (12 years a slave, Shame)

All the usual Contenders from me, Matthew Vaughn and Guy Ritchie
Both very talented, and well experienced in Action movies. I also
don't know that many directors. :)

Martin Campbell for me as he's directed the two best modern Bond films in my opinion. Would be great to do one more with Daniel Craig.
    Yes. Considerably!

She's American, but Katherine Bigelow might not be a bad choice. She is one of the better directors of "action thrillers".

Love to see Nolan direct though not sure it will happen, right now I would be happy for safe hands Campbell to return.

Just seems that Nolan is too big---he's his own brand, actually---to settle under Eon's yolk. It would be interesting, but I can't see it happening.

Joe Wright is my top pick. He'll most likely bring along Dario Marionelli (if he doesn't use Arnold) and his usual cinematographer Seumas McGarvey, and the trio make some beautiful cinema. But Joe Wright himself has a knack for drama (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice) and action (Hanna). Hanna, in particular has a good dose of intrigue and bizarre which is very much in line with James Bond. Otherwise,

    - Martin Campbell if we get another Bond film like Goldeneye.
    - Susanne Bier, having just watched the first ep for The Night Manager. She would be great.

    Who I definitely don't want:
    Christopher Nolan
    Danny Boyle.
Film: Tomorrow Never Dies | Girl: Teresa di Vicenzo | Villain: Max Zorin | Car: Aston Martin Volante | Novel: You Only Live Twice | Bond: Sir Sean Connery

I don't want Christopher Nolan either, probably because he'll bring along Hans Zimmer, who would create a Bond score using the worst elements of Newman's and Serra's Bond scores.

I know this may seem like a weird choice, but if he was to make a standalone film/set of films, Edgar Wright could make a really unique Bond film, that balances action and comedy. From Hit Fuzz, he's really good at fast paced action scenes which don't confuse the viewer on what's going on (QoS) and he's great at putting in little jokes and references in the background of his films. He could do a proper OTT balls to the wall action Bond.

If they can get Nolan, maybe he could drag Christian Bale along. Bond+Nolan+Bale+a quality script would be a super block buster (in the $1.5 billion range).

Some might say that going with an established actor as Bond isn't EON's style, but now is the time to break routine.
  • HowardBHowardB USAPosts: 2,737MI6 Agent
Believe it or not Bale is 42. That being said, he is a very youthful looking 42 (can easily pass for 10 years younger). Bale of course would make an excellent Bond but has previously dismissed the role (when asked, he replied that he played a "serial killer" already in American Psycho). Bale's name over the titles would give the films instant credibility with movie goers and the critics. I don't know how his rep as being "difficult" would go over with EON who try to avoid that sort of thing. In fairness, Nolan has apparently had no trouble with Bale. I would have no real issue with a Bond trilogy directed by Nolan with Bale as Bond. I think the knock on Nolan with regards to shooting fight scenes has more to do with the large brawls in the Batman films and some of the stuff with Bale in costume as the Batman. The action/fights with Bale out of costume in Batman Begins were quite good IMO. I would think there would be a different approach to Bond fights.

I think Christian Bale has the right look for Bond. At 31 years old in Batman Begins, he looked like a mature adult just the same as Connery did in Dr. No at 32. Too many men still look like kids in their early 30s. And today, 11 years later, he looks better than Moore did at 42. He could look the part now, but he also could have looked the part when Craig took the role (and been a more appropriate age for a rookie Bond).

I don't think EON would want anything to do with Bale unless Nolan was directing and I don't believe they really want go for Nolan either. I just don't see Nolan being willing to work collaboratively with EON or EON being willing to hand over complete control to Nolan. Mendes, EON and Craig were willing and able to work as a team. Nolan on the other hand would probably be like "ok...Bond theme, check; pre-title sequence, check; gun barrel opening, check; cut it for a PG-13, check; now Barbara leave me alone and let me make my Bond film.

    Can John Glen still direct?
  • HowardBHowardB USAPosts: 2,737MI6 Agent
If there is a new Bond actor, my first choice would be Martin Campbell. Campbell will be 73 in October but in some recent video I've seen of him he looks very well and fit. In fact, even if Craig returns I'd love Campbell to return for DC's last. Truth be told, there are plenty of talented directors out there who would be willing and able to do a good job with a Bond film. I'm more concerned with who will be the next Bond if Craig opts to not return.

Sadly, I doubt he could handle a modern Bond film at his age.

I must be the only person who never wants Martin Campbell again for Bond. He's only good for action scene and is terrible with scenes that have any substance.

John Glen hasn't directed anything since a Christopher Lambert movie in 2001.

I only want Campbell back if we get something like GE - a Bond film with a moody, European feel. Not an Americanised interpretation of James Bond as we got with CR.

Campbell did well with the dramatic scenes in GE IMO - the interrogation with Mishkin, Bond and Natalya on the beach and the 'I trusted you Alec' scene spring to mind.

The only reason I mentioned John Glen was because I feel some magic in Bond was gone after that Licence To Kill hiatus. Maybe my taste in movies hasn't matured over the years as the series has matured. I like Campbell and Mendes, but it's not the same.

My take on Glen is that he's a workmanlike director. Given the right boundries and assest he will make a good movie on time and on budget, but he'll never make a truely great movie. This is why I wish Ridly Scott made LTK.

But he's not a first rate action director, and Bond shouldn't be considered an 'action' series. Plus, his films are colourless, soulless and humourless, so we'd get an anaemic Bond film if he was to direct one.
