Spectre, one of the most complained about films

I've been reading this week that spectre has received a lot of complaints about the level of violence and gore for its rating, it's documented that both the hinx eye gouging scene and Mr whites suicide were re edited to comply and get the rating it did, I didnt think either of these scenes were gory, maybe a bit cringe making. Having read it opens up an interesting debate, are movie rankings appropriate and is there any mileage in a more adult themed bond. For the record I like Bond where he is, and look forward to the day I can take my little boy to see a new Bond film, probably bond 29 with the rate they come around.

Seriously? I've seen more graphic scenes of violence in prime-time TV shows--for instance, Gotham--than I've seen in SPECTRE. Of course, this could just be an American perspective: as they say, in the US if you show a man kissing a woman's breast that gets censored, but if a man shoots a woman in the breast that's just fine.

:)) I never spotted that, for some reason it's getting a lot of press this week, the most complained about film in 2015 apparently.

I found the eye gouging scene, unsettling but not Graphic or sensationalised, simply
Well filmed for the correct effect, of showing just how much of an opponent, Bond
    Would be facing.
The drill torture scene, I also found unsettling, I think most of us have a fear of drills.
I though Craig gave a great performance in that chair.
I can understand complaints about meaningless violence or sexual scenes that are only
Put in to a film, for titillation. We all know the horror films that will have a topless sex scene
Because they have a 15 cert so can have one, so they put one in. For no other reason than
    It keeps teenage boys happy.
But the sequences in Spectre are part of the plot and help move the story along.

I don't see spectre as any more graphic than the hobbit or Lord of the rings, just because an orc has black blood spurting when he is decapitated to my mind does not make it less gory. Certificators would say an orc is not human I suppose?

I wasn't particularly bothered by the eye-gouging scene until last week when I learned that through an on-set error instigated by an unhappy Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes, an unknowing Bautista actually did gouge out the poor actor's eyes. They had to work on it in post-production when they realised that you could actually see the squashed and dangling eyeballs hanging out of the sockets as his head hits the table. Rather than spend millions re-shooting the scene, thankfully they got some VFX wizzes to sort it out, but if you slow down the scene you can see how pudgy and distorted the actor's nose and cheekbones are.

I thought that was a horrible scene. Unpardonable.

That's because you will easily get some thug at throwing out time getting in a scrap and doing the same thing to some poor bloke who will be blinded for the rest of his life.

Once you put that sort of thing out there, it's hard to undo.

Most of the violence in Bond is too far out there to emulate subconsciously. I mean, chances are you will not get a Rolex with a strangle device, or a bowler hat with a blade, or even get hold of a gun. That said, the whole Bond holding a gun mofif and License to Kill slogan has gone out the window since it became clear in recent decades that any young punk can get hold of a gun and murder someone.

I thought Bautista's intro scene was indeed unsettling...and highly effective. I hope Eon never self-censors merely to avoid stimulating idiots and lunatics, who have been doing evil and appalling things since bipeds first swung a club and observed fire. The argument of good taste is a different thing...but I do want my Bond villains/henchmen to fill me with dread.

I'm pretty desensitized to most violence on screen but I always wince during eye-gauging scenes like this one and Blade Runner's in particular.

One of the most disgusting crimes in the past few years ( in my opinion) was a guy who
As well as beating his girlfriend, one night drugged her and gouged her eyes out ! .... So
Many psychos have these ideas, long before any film or TV series does it.

When it comes to eye gouging I think every recent tarantino film
Contains some form of optical violence.

SP was hardly graphic. I'd like to see a more graphic Bind film rated 15, after the success of Deadpool with such a rating I feel a Bind film would do fine at the box office with such a rating.

I have to chuckle a bit when so many complain about this type of violence being too real and disgusting for a Bond film, when if one reads the novels, Fleming had plenty of graphic violence in them. Of course, when the series started, they were trying to sell as many tickets and appeal to as broad an audience as they could (and the censors back then had a lot of power), and despite the upswing of violence (see Bonnie & Clyde, The Wild Bunch, etc.) EON kept their violence on the PG level (very little blood - bang, bang, bad guys fall down) for a long time. When violence in the mass media kept getting more graphic year by year - both in the news and in entertainment - the Bond films started to reflect that in small incremental degrees.

It's an interesting world we live in today. It took all these decades before EON could show the level of violence Fleming wrote in his novels in the 1950's and it took rebooting the series to even get to that - thought LTK got pretty close. There are many who would like the violence dialed back to the old days of the more sanitized variety, but given the state of the world and entertainment, I can't image that will ever happen.

I'm not sure a more sanitised bond film would attract new fans? Most games played are considerably more violent than any Bond film, I personally didn't find anything wrong with any scene in Spectre, severine being shot in Sf was more disturbing in a way. But hinxs eye gouging set the character up as a cold blooded killer and thoroughly nasty guy, in fact I'm surprised more wasn't made of his metal thumb nails??

I have a feeling Hinx could come back as Jaws did. I didn't mind him at all in SP and resulted in one of the best fight scenes of the, series.

I love DC's body language in that fight. He has an "oh shi*, this guy is huge and lethal"face while also having to fight for his life.
  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,792MI6 Agent
Agreed, I too love that fight. Bond looks totally out classed, finished, his punches becoming
    Weaker. As he throws everthing he knows at Hinx but nothing works. -{
