I am looking to buy an autograph book with this signature of Peter Madden. Can anyone tell me if they think the autograph is real and what it is worth please.
    Thanks
  • Hi Punjabipal,

Yes that is an authentic autograph of Peter Madden, he's a very rare autograph.

How much are they asking for it?

    Best wishes

    Hi Autograph,
It was in an autograph book that I was looking to buy....That was why I was wondering how much it was worth. I could pay more for the book, if I knew what Peter Madden was worth. I was looking to pay around £100 for the book that has around 40 autographs in it but obviously if Madden is worth more...I will pay more.
    Thanks for your reply.

Doesn't seem like anyone is using the autograph section anymore? The fake/authentic reference links in the beginning appear to be dead. I've PM'd a couple people and nobody's replied. Does anyone collect Bond graphs anymore? :)

I collect but don't post here often...

I also failed to see why a handwriting guide to spotting fakes as featured in this thread couldn't also be utilised by the fakers themselves! :#

Still an avid collector, but I haven't posted here in a long time...

I do still log in occasionally in case people are needing help/advice :)

Matt Munro seems to be a fairly common sig ?

    Never seen a Teru Shimada.........
  • 007_Autographcollector007_Autographcollector Posts: 221MI6 Agent
Matt Monro is fairly easy to find.

Teru is extremely rare, since starting collecting, I have seen 2x album pages and 2x 8x10 photos (one of those is the one in my collection)

John Kitzmiller is even rarer, I have only ever seen one genuine example come on the market in 10 years.

Long time lurker, first time poster. I collect many things Bond related but have always had a soft spot for autographs. I started out with the official autographed trading cards from Inkworks and Rittenhouse Archives but in recent years I have started attending conventions and have enjoyed meeting some of my favourite actors and having them sign pictures of my choice.

On another forum, one autograph collector said they saw no reason in paying for any autograph from a dealer etc. (for a living actor) when you have the choices of conventions, camping out at premieres and theatre stage doors, and finally fanmail. Well, I don't agree with that mindset.. I don't entirely enjoy conventions themselves (far too busy), being trapped in a film premiere pen with (the poorly behaved) dealers sounds repellent, and as much as I like the idea of fan mail I don't have the time and effort to put into it. We don't all live in LA or London with greater access to celeb encounters. Nothing wrong with buying if you do your homework.

Anyway, I'm rambling. Pierce Brosnan is my favourite Bond and I have always fancied getting an auto of his on an 8x10. I know that his flourish filled signature has displayed a lot of variance over the years and confuses many as to their authenticity, but after looking at MANY examples I have come to see similarities that are usually always there.
So, in keeping with the advice offered throughout this thread, i.e. to satisfy yourself after lots of research, that is exactly what I have done and I have already purchased the below autograph, which looks like a very nice example of his full signature:

Things that reassure me in the signature itself:
    - The same looped 'L' in 'Luck' that he often writes in 'Love Life' on other examples
    - Every letter legible in 'Pierce' which is nearly always the case even if his 'Brosnan' is abbreviated
    - In 'Pierce' where the flat top of the 'r' joins the 'c'
    - In 'Brosnan' the way the 'r' and 'o' connect closely

Other factors (maybe all wishful thinking!)
    - The 'luck' message that seems unnecessary for a fake, the same with '00797' which I have never seen before
    - An early version of his signature on an image from early in his Bond career
    - Not signed on the picture itself which I guess would be more 'desirable'

All that said, this is the first time I have bought from a dealer and whilst I am 99.9% sure of its authenticity, I would appreciate the expert opinion.

I wasn't so sure on the either faded ink or slightly running out pen (there are lighter and darker strokes) but thought it was a fair compromise for a nice looking autograph. Does this sort of thing affect desirability or am I being too OCD?

    Thanks,
    Dent

    Hello Dent!

    First and foremost, welcome and thank you very much for posting -{

That is indeed a 100% authentic Pierce Brosnan autograph, and as you stated a lovely early example of his his signature which is the most sought after.
Although he does sign a lot of autographs, there are still people out there faking him (though nowhere near as much as Connery).

Here is another early example from one of the most reputable sellers I know:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/PIERCE-BROSNAN-in-REMINGTON-STEELE-Hand-signed-10-x-8-portrait-w-Zimbalist-/162161495026?hash=item25c1940bf2:g:tcAAAOSwZVlXpxcH

    All the best and I hope this answers any doubts you had -{

Cheers for your reply Autographcollector, I have enjoyed reading through this thread and being able to contribute to it.

Whilst the dealer I bought it from had a couple other Brosnan autos that did not look right to me, I was almost certain this one was legit having satisfied myself through lots of research. That said, having never bought from a dealer before, the "rubber stamp" from an expert such as yourself is much appreciated, so thank you. I should have the item in hand tomorrow and can't wait.

May I ask what the collector consensus is on the importance of the ink used for an autograph? Does it affect desirability or value greatly? I am a sucker for bright blue sharpie so seeing this one, that has some pen tip fibre streaking and doesn't look like a new pen/or possibly slightly faded ink(?) made me pause. But then I thought I'd be daft to miss out on such a nice example of his signature for those reasons.

As for the Pierce signature you linked; I have never seen one so early. It is interesting to see just how neat and legible it is and to see his signature when the 'B' looked like a 'B' and not an 'S'(!) and before he started adding the elaborate 'flick' to the 'n' at the end of 'Brosnan'. But you can still see all the features of his signature I mentioned earlier (flat top of 'r', all letters present in 'Pierce', the closely connected 'r' & 'o'). I find his dodgy autos fairly obvious to spot, Connery on the other hand I wouldn't dare have the confidence to take a punt on.

Clifton James is still going strong singing TTM at age 95. His handwriting has gotten shakier over the years. It looks like this example, the seller is trying to mimic the 007 40th anniversary trading cards with the index card. Those cards do tend to fetch more as they are 'official' and part of a collection.

Very interesting and informative thread. Personally I only collect autographs I get in person. Simply because I don't believe them otherwise. That isn't to say there aren't genuine ones out there tho'. The only one I ever bought was actually at a concert for The Police , where the fan club were selling signed books , and I wanted the books anyway.
I have a number of Bond girls, and George Lazemby , all signed from various memorabilia shows at the NEC in Birmingham. Happy to scan and post them if it helps anybody. Its a real shame that show seemed to die of death for stars attending, as it was good.

My real wish list is Sir Roger. I'm actually going to see him on his tour next month. I couldn't commit at the time to buy a meet n great ticket (nor justify the £140 !! ). I just wonder if he does tend to sign still if you happen to catch him before or after a show ?
    Thanks.

I think Moore will no longer sign before or after a show , you would need a lot of luck for it to happen :#

That's a shame. I'm going to see him in Belfast in a couple of weeks, I would love to get my Autoart Esprit signed, but it'll never happen.

I've snagged some signed Roger Moore prints from Bondstars during the last few events they've done, but I see they don't have Connery, Craig or Brosnan. There is a Connery one on Ebay from a 'Wiltshire Memorabilia', has anyone dealt with them before?

I always heard Connery's sig was notoriously difficult to get.

Personally I don't buy autographs , I only like ones Ive seen them sign themselves. This was hammered home, when a shop called Sportizus were caught selling fakes. They used to have a couple of lovely shops in Solihull and Birmingham, and their stuff was well presented.
That's not to say that the Bondstars are selling them. They do seem to get the actual stars to do sittings, so they are as good as anybody if your going to buy one.
If I knew it was genuine, I would happily buy a Moore or Connery autographed picture.

I could be wrong - but I believe Gareth Owen - who is one of the people that run Bondstars is also Roger Moore's Personal Assistant. So I think you'd be safe to get a roger Moore autograph from them.

I believe that already in the 60s Sean used his brother to sign fanmail......at least the last few yrs he often refuses to sign in person ("I don't get paid so why should I sign them ?")
  • MrBennMrBenn Posts: 9MI6 Agent
I just don't get why some 'stars' are so grumpy / unwilling to sign autographs. Okay, there are some that are getting autographs to just flog on Ebay , but in reality what percentage is it of those asking for signatures ? Id say small. And so what - they make a few quid. It takes a second to sign something.

Ok,for mega stars I can see they may have loads waiting , and that may not be possible to sign all...but to see somebody just walk thru with signing nothing is almost rude.
And its not just film starts, sports can be just as bad. The new trend of wearing headphones, so they can pretend they cant see any ... grrrrr I once went to see England cricket team train, and Andrew Flintoff literally ran thru about 6 of us just hoping to get something signed.

I recently met Midge Ure after a concert, and he took time to not only sign stuff for us saddoes (!) , but also to chat . Class act.

As for getting others to sign stuff.... isn't that forgery ? That's why I never buy anything signed.

So I have seen a lot of Connery and Craig autographs online that go from anywhere between $20-$300... Is there a certain price that means it has to be fake? How much are autographs really worth?
Does it depend on the Bond actor? I would imagine most of the minor Bond actors are fairly cheap but someone like Connery or Craig has to fetch a decent amount?!

I have seen some celebrities get mad over fans wanting autographs claiming it's just a name on a piece of paper but I think the fact that they are doing it themselves makes it super cool! My old director from theater had a wall full of 100s of autographs. Marilyn Monroe to all the Bonds. He had a theater room with framed pictures on the wall with the autographs. I can see how it could be annoying to some celebs if you have hundreds of fans lined up but also keep in mind if it's just a few what's the big deal? You scribble your name on a piece of paper? Personally I think it'd be cool to have a photo of you and the actor versus autograph but since that's not always possible autographs are the way to go.

A real Connery autograph is going to be very valuable. I don't even know how it will be possible to get him to sign something today.
