Mendes thought that too after Skyfall. He should have stuck with his gut.

It may be that Mendes ran out of original ideas with Skyfall or it may be that some combination of EON/MGM/Sony didn't like his original ideas for Spectre.

    We'll never know.

The idea of a hit man who has grown tired of his work isn't very original, but it was original to Bond.

Not really that new to Bond, its certainly an undercurrent in TLD & again as subtext in LTK. There are traces in OHMSS. Its a thread throughout the novels, most obviously inYOLT

I guess I am in the minority here by saying I really liked Spectre and am not seeing TH in the role of Bond. He looks too 'sweet' for the role as a deadly assassin. Aidan Turner though, would make a rocking Bond.

But he was already signed on for a second before Skyfall was filmed...

So he was just full of crap when he said he wasn't going to do another movie after Skyfall?

I assume you mean another Bond movie rather than just any movie ?
Why do you think SPECTRE took so long after Skyfall ? Eon were waiting for him...

Yes, I meant Bond movie, since this is the Bond forum. I know EON were waiting for him, but here are some things he said after Skyfall:

"It's been a fantastic experience, but it's been completely exhausting. Do I want to do another one? I'm a shadow of my former self. No, I don't know. I felt like everything I wanted to do with a Bond movie, I put into this film."

"It's not true that I've worked out a new plot for Bond. Nor have I made any commitment to another Bond movie. I have said that I've put everything I wanted into this film. The idea I can simply start again makes me feel physically ill. I need to get back to theatre, spend more time at home and then… and then it might be someone else's turn."

"One of the things is that I put everything I wanted to do in a Bond movie into this movie. If I felt I could do that again, maybe I’d do another one, but that’s a big ask because I’ve got a hell of a lot, you know what I mean?"

He didn't exactly say that he wasn't coming back, but he said that he didn't have any commitments at the time, and he didn't seem all that interested in doing another. But I think it explains why Spectre was so different from Skyfall.

Since Spectre he has said, "It was an incredible adventure, I loved every second of it, but I think it's time for somebody else. I'm a storyteller. And at the end of the day, I want to make stories with new characters."

I think he likes money more than creativity at this point, so unfortunately he's probably not done with Bond. On the other hand, I wish he could be more like John Glen, who didn't even try to be creative and was better for it.

Thanks for finding the quotes of him saying he put everything he wanted to do with a Bond movie he did with Skyfall! its pretty telling and says a lot about his enthusiasm or perhaps reluctance towards Spectre, and the end result speaks for itself. And I think he's absolutely done now. Both him and EON know that they couldn't recapture the massive success or critical acclaim of Skyfall with Spectre so its best they go in a new direction with a new director.

I liked Spectre a lot. I even prefer it over Skyfall. My only real reservation about if Mendes came back was if Thomas Newman was to join him again (I'd like David Arnold back please).
I had a mate, who had never ever seen a Bond film, so I showed him Skyfall then Spectre. And as much as he liked Skyfall, he felt Spectre was 'more enjoyable' 'with more love put in it' and 'more of a Bond film'.
If EON can further go down this route, trying to create a Bond influenced by Bond, not by Bourne or other material, than I'd be happy. Sure, bring on the laughs, the action set pieces, the nuclear bomb countdown.
I wanna see M catching Bond with a girl at the end of a mission.
I wanna see Bond walk into Moneypenny's office and lean on her desk, flirting.
Bring back some of that stuff, with a smile, and I'd be happy.

Likewise. That is why I like Spectre more than Skyfall. Some of the old Bond vibe was back, with of course the Spectre meeting being the main part. At least for me.

I thought they struck a nice balance in Spectre with regard to some of the classic Bondian elements. It was the other stuff - like foster brother Blofeld, the score, and the subpar action sequences - that ruined it for me.

Spectre just had a lot of small problems, like the cinematographer making it look like someone took a piss on all the snow in Austria. Snow shouldn't be yellow!

I think we both agreed that we would enjoy the film more without the urine tint, it detracts so much from the cinematography and makes no sense outside of the Mexico city and hot climate scenes.

I remember a winter in Poland many years ago with yellow snow. It was then explained by some sort of storms over the Sahara, which lifted the sand and carried it over to Eastern Europe. It was unusual, but made a nice difference and distraction from the usual, horrible snow.

Mexico City isn't as hot as you'd expect. But for the outside Moroccan scenes it actually makes a lot of sense. I'd expect London and Austria to have a blue tint.

I might be barking completely up the wrong tree here, but I think that part of the lack of news or information is perhaps as a result of Spectre and the many leaks that occurred throughout pre-production, filming and then post. I mean there was so much secret information broadcasted onto the net, and it ultimately showed Sony and EON to be very leaky ships indeed. It also killed some of the momentum that Spectre may have otherwise had. Perhaps this news blackout about Craig and Bond 25 is due to the fact that EON have plugged the leaks and are taking extra precaution to ensure that nothing gets out before they want it to. Taking this approach, it may very well be that Craig is a lock, and that a screenplay is well and truly in the works. Mind you I could be totally wrong :)) :))

I't understandable if Sony wants to avoid all the leaks they had about SPECTRE. But by this time they must know who's working on the script, and ideally they would have a director attached to the project. Why not publish that info?
