Yeah, this thread died off as soon as it was stickified.

    Sorry about that.
It was my suggestion to make it a sticky. (I guess it's a pride thing).
My love for Roger will continue, wether this thread will die or not!

In 1973 when Moore's Live and let Die was released I was in my final year of school and looking for employment.

It was the era of power cuts, strikes, mass unemployment and the three day week.

Going to watch a Moore Bond movie was two hours of pure escapism and entertainment before having to return to the grime of the real World that was 1970's Britain.

They will always hold a special place for me because when I watch them now they remind me of that period in my life.

    My Moore Bond films:

    Live And Let Die
    The Spy Who Loved Me
    For Your Eyes Only
    Octopussy
The Man With The Golden Gun
    Moonraker
    A View To A Kill
FRWl, CR, OHMSS, TSWLM, SF, GF, TLD, LTK, TND, FYEO, OP,TWINE, GE, LALD, TB, SPECTRE, DN, YOLT, TMWTGG, QOS, MR, DAF, DAD, AVTAK, NTTD.

I watched Thunderball last night and noticed scenes that were similar to ones used in the Roger Moore era. For example, the back-stretcher rack was recycled as the (far superior) centrifuge scene in MR. The junkanoo scene was also brought back in MR in the form of the Rio carnival. Bond swimming to shore and being picked up by a woman reminded me of AVTAK. TSWLM and MR are very similar overall to YOLT and all by the same director. Guy Hamilton's DAF and Moore films are also follow their own unique formula i.e final henchmen appears on a boat/train.

Anyway…what I'm getting at is that the Roger Moore films are very similar to the previous Bond films. Some fans on here treat the RM era as some separate entity or some wildly different take on Bond. I've never seen it that way at all. They're just more of the same, and in a good way!

I agree. I don't see Moore's films as being all that different from most of Connery's.

I think what made the Moore films even more enjoyable was the sense that everyone on the team seemed to be having a great time. Never did Moore look like he was phoning it in, some would even argue that his performances grew stronger and stronger during his tenure as Bond. As much as I respect and Love Sean Connery, when I was younger to even today, I draw more to Sir Rog, believing he appealed to a wider amount of people.

This is very true. Despite the magic of the first several films, there were always conflicts with Connery, Harry Saltzman and Cubby Broccoli were at each other's throats, and there just seemed to be a good deal of unpleasantness involved with the Connery films.

Agreed. My appreciation for Moore is the fact that he throws 100% at each and every time he's Bond - assisted somewhat by the challenge of playing the role differently too (based on the story).

I like him best overall in FYEO and AVTAK.

Although some of his best moments are in TSWLM, MR, and OP... those films also contain some of his worst moments.

In FYEO and AVTAK, Roger is consistently excellent and delivers a serious Bond with just the right touch of humor and class. The only drawback is he's not quite as sharp looking as in the 70's.

I actually just watched AVTAK on Hulu and it was the first time I've seen it in HD. I was thinking the added detail would make Rog look older, but he came across looking fine. As far as I could tell they fixed the crop factor and re-added the camera shake during the earthquake. (Lowry accidentally removed the shakiness on the UE DVD)

I don't blame Roger for the Tarzan yell since he had literally nothing to do with it.

The Bondola is awesome in my book!

The moments I consider the worst in those three films are: (Seems to be the writing he was subjected to)

TSWLM: Being annoying in the van during the Jaws attack. (as you know…this scene really bothers me)
MR: Interrupting Holly during the tour comes off as quite rude to me.
OP: Kinda forcing himself on Maud in the bedroom. I recall her last words being, "Noo mmph"

There's only a small handful of scenes where Roger's actual performance was a let down to me. One of them being the cheesy, "Oh of course you are" to Moneypenny in OP.

Same thing happens with Connery though. I can love him during some scenes in Thunderball and cringe during others.

Being very rude is the point. Bond is an arsehole to Dr Goodhead throughout the first half of the film, not just here. It starts with Bond's sexist comment when they first meet, and Bond thinks he has to prove to her that he's smarter than she is because he's a man. Bond can't accept that a woman knows things he doesn't know and can do things that he can't do. Eventually, he learns that he needs to put his ego aside and work with Dr Goodhead. He learns that women are his equal and that his sexism needs to change. MR is one of the few films that shows any kind of character development in Bond pre-Craig, and I think it's one of the film's strengths.

Yes it is! Dr Goodhead is one of my favourite Bond women because of her capabilities and how she challenges Bond's ego. In previous films Bond just has to win the girl's heart, but in Moonraker that can't happen until Bond also respects the girl on his level. Just sleeping with Bond meant nothing to her, as it usually did in the past.

It just isn't his strongsuit. Moore brings this affability to the role and that's the appeal of his take on the character. Seeing him act like a jerk makes me cringe a little.

He's Roger Moore as James Bond, so he's kinda both. The former impacts the latter. I like Roger Moore, but his first two films very much seem like they were written for Connery. Lewis Gilbert recognized this, and hired Chris Wood for rewrites to make the character a better fit for Moore.

Interesting, didn't know this aspect. I will say that Tom M's style does suit Moore in the humour department. Moore is brilliantly funny in LALD/TMWTGG and at times even plays it in a very sinister way - like the entire Lazar scene in Macau.

Slapping around of Andrea Andes in the hotel room to me just comes across as lazy writing and heavily dated. Even then - it's awful to watch. LALD and TMWTGG only feel like Moore films based on the humour really.

I'm in a bed & breakfast right now watching TV and The Persuaders is on. (Roger Moore and Tony Curtis) For 1971, the show feels incredibly dated and cheesy. The colorful outfits and music and longhair are screaming 70's. Just makes me appreciate how well the Bond films have held up.

What's your favourite coolest Moore moment?
I think he had numerous strong moments when he just acted or looked the business.
His strong pose in FYEO, shooting Locque in his car without flinching as the Mercedes was aiming at him.
Or that little head nod he does to the goon in FYEO, during the citreon chase!
I might even add the Quiche making scene to this!

His best "tough" moment is in FYEO when he kicks Locque's car off the cliff. Very badass, I'm glad John Glen convinced Moore to do it.

Roger's salary is an interesting read:

    LALD : $1,000,000
    TMWTGG : $1,000,000
    TSWLM : $1,000,000
    MR : $4,000,000
    FYEO : $3,000,000 + 5% of net US profits = $4,607,500
    OP : $4,000,000 + 5% of net US profits = $5,265,800
    AVTAK : $5,000,000 + 5% of US gross = $7,515,000

According to Wikipedia, which references a 1987 book about United Artists for TMTWGG and TSWLM Roger also took a share of the profits - and his fixed salary wasn't as much as stated above:

    LALD: $180,000 no share
    TMWTGG: $240,000 + $3.66m (2.5%) = $3.9m
    TSWLM: $300,000 + $6.95m (3.75%) = $7.25m

I am tending to not believe that Roger got paid $1m for LALD, TWMTGG as a base. If he did get paid the salary including the % for his 2nd and 3rd - that's a tonne of cash!

He made just under $33m for his 7 films - which is not bad work!
