There is a new book out about Maxwell Knight, it's called Maxwell Knight, MI5's Greatest Spymaster. Within the book it recalls how Maxwell or M recruited young men who were orphaned or lost a parent or had some sort of disability, maladjusted young men as Vesper put it.
Knight was and still is a legend within the intelligence service and some think was Flemings inspiration for his litery character.
