curious. what would you consider from dalton as wide eye theatrics.

Although your question is directed at chrisisall, who hasn't responded (yet), I'll have a go at the answer: What I remember is when Pam Bouvier is dolled up, Bond looks at her like he's never seen a woman before in his life.

Not the coolest Bond moment I've seen 8-)

In saying that, I could never take to Dalton (or Moore) as James Bond but I'll keep my vent to the relevant section/topic on the best and not so best James Bond portrayals.

I think if any of us gave our wife or girlfriend that look when they get
ready, we would definitely be getting "lucky" that night. ;)

    Connery

+ looks of a killer and a suave secret agent
+ looked good in fight scenes
+ Great with the one liners
+ Had the Fleming material to work with
+ Had the swinging 60's era to help him become an icon (and was partially responsible of course)
    - Became sloppy after Thunderball.

    Lazenby

+ looked great in the fight scenes
+ Acted well in the emotional scenes
+ had great material to work with
    - Performance was inconsistent
    - although handsome, I never got that sexy vibe from him like Connery had
    - Missed that killer look

    Moore

+ great with the one liners
    + great with the ladies
    + coolest gadgets
    + Gentleman charmer
    - not believable as a fighter
    - Had annoying 'know it all' lines
    - Not a very believable secret agent
    - Probably the furthest from what Fleming had in mind as a ruthless killer
    - Material became over the top, again far from the Fleming material

    Dalton
+ Had a great killer look
+ Understood and acted out the Fleming source material
+ Convincing as a secret agent
    - Although good looking, he lacked chemistry with the ladies
    - Wasn't too great with the one liners
    - Was a victim of horrible clothing

    Brosnan

+ Probably the best looking Bond actor
    + Convincing as a secret agent/killer
+ good with the one liners
+ Quite decent in the fight scenes
+ Had the best gun barrel walk and turn
    - Had quite bad materials/scripts to work with

    Craig

+ had the looks of a killer
+ in general good material to work with
    - Not convincing as a sexy Bond
    - Sometimes a bit wooden in the one-liners

To conclude: A Connery in its finest form (DN, FRWL and GF specifically) is unmatched and has set the bar. He ticked all the boxes for me there. However, the fact that he was the first and that he was able to work with the Fleming material has helped him tremendously, as well as the coaching of Terence Young.

The toughest break is for Brosnan. He pretty much ticks all the boxes too (although he doesn't have Connerys or Dalton's edge) but had mediocre material to work with. And his send off with Die another day is the reason people might think less of him then he deserves.

Was Dalton not just a victim of the times when it comes to clothing in LTK? Baggy suits and clothes were de rigueur then.
It was either that.....or the priesthood

His clothes were fine in TLD, it was only LTK that had the horrible, baggy ****.

I don't care if millions disagree with me, this is still my opinion and it's a free world for that. The only clothes I didn't like him in was his swimsuit in Licence To Kill.

Some of his clothes were cool. The Velcro on the evening jacket in LD was one of my favourite elements of the series, along with Connery's Tux under stealth wear in GF. The leather jacket in LTD was also very nice as was the three piece suit. Not such a fan of the LTK dressed down thing, and don't start me on the hair, but otherwise I think he comes in for undue criticism.

Funny how that's arguably his best fitting garment :)) :)).
Actually, I think he was bad-ass in that. "Compliments of Sharky", "Make a sound and yer dead", the skiing behind the airplane and the underwater combined with the red piping on that thing, made a lasting impression on me.

Dalton did pull off some good looks in TLD, I'll give him that.
The clothes were quite good on paper; the velco on the dinner suit, tan suit in Tangiers...but even in his best outfits, the execution still felt a bit lacking. It lacked the uniqueness and exclusivity that most of Sir Roger's and Sean's clothing had. They didn't feel unique enough for me to be interesting.
Anyway, that may just be me.

    My thoughts on each actor;

    Sean Connery

+ Suave and cocky, great at pulling of emotional scenes as well.
    + Great at one- liners
+ Great scenes with Lois Maxwell. Full of sexual tension.
+ Great in fight scenes. Sean has a habit of baring his teeth during fight scenes, which makes him look like a killer.
    - Hits women to get info
    - His performances in YOLT and DAF,are inconsistent. In some scenes, his delivery and facial epressions are on point and in other scenes, it's clear he's phoning it in.

    George Lazenby

+Great in fight scenes. His background in the Australian army helps.

+ Looks handsome. People give out on him about his arse chin, but i think it adds to his masculinity.

+ He has great chemistry with Diana Rigg and it makes Bond and Tracy's romance believeable.

+ Gives Bond some vulnerability. The scene at the ice rink is a good example

+Despite not being an actor, he nailed the final scene! Can't imagine Connery doing that scene.

    - Allegedly threw his weight around and got big for his boots.

    - Only did one film. I saw him do an interview on Australian television and he said that he regrets not doing more films.

    - He spends the majority of the film being dubbed.

    Roger Moore
    +Gentleman Bond
    + Deep authorative voice
+ Added a fun element in his portrayal of Bond.
+ Dry sense of humour. Great with one- liners
    + Great physical comedian
    - Not great in fight scenes.
    - His portrayal was a bit of a smart arse
    - Dubbed screaming in later films.
    - Should've left after OP

    Timothy Dalton

    +Handsome.

+Brought a darker edge to the role. A welcome change after the Roger Moore era.

+Capable of humour, although it's subtle.

    - Not exactly a ladykiller. He had promise during the TLD PTS, but acts socially awkward during the rest of his tenure.

    Pierce Brosnan

    + Great in fight scenes.

+ Capable of looking like a killer.

+ Great at humour and showing emotion during key scenes.

    - He's handsome, but he looks like a catalogue model.

    - Whispery delivery at times.

    Daniel Craig

+Looks like how i imagine Bond in the novels.
    +Great at fight scenes.
    +Deep voice.
    +capable of emotional scenes.
    - Doesn't get much humour in his films

A minor gripe with 5 actors: Apart from RM, the actor's adopted RP accents for the part, but thier natural accents would always creep in.

That is interesting, that you imagine the Bond from the novels to look like Craig. The Bond from the novels was 6 feet tall, weighed 75 kilo's, had black hair and blue eyes. Aside from the blue eyes, not exactly much like Craig.

Look wise, Dalton and Brosnan are most close I would say.

:)) Brosnan did tend to have a very whispery delivery but only really in GoldenEye. He sounds noticeably different in that film at times - almost like he's trying to hard to come across as a confident upper class Englishman. He toned it down tenfold in his next films though and came across far better.
....and the best he ever managed was a sermon on the mount.
