I wanna cover a few things real quick.

First of all, this has been a tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with the deceased and all those affected by it. It's a sad day when this is becoming the norm.

Secondly, as a gun owner myself I support the Second Ammendment. However, anyone with a criminal record or mental illness should absolutely not have the right to purchase a gun. Unfortunately, that wouldn't have stopped this from occuring since, and correct me if I've heard wrong, the gunman had neither of these. Assault weapons should definitely be left for law enforcement and the military. Their only purpose is to kill. Around here(Sacramento County), guns are for sport and protection. I'm not sure what could've been done to avoid this. Even if guns were banned, some people can make their own guns now. Personally, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

When it comes to President Trump, on some things I agree. On others I don't. As other countries put themselves first, the U.S. should be no different. I consider myself an Independent. The Right and Left, as Dr. No put it, are just points each as stupid as the other. Overall, I have believe that the President, whether you support him or not, should as least be a little respected. Conservatives didn't constantly whine after Obama was elected and reelected. Yes I know some did, but not to this extent. The same is expected of the liberals. Personally, I think Trump is a refreshing change in some ways. I'm not fond of his speaking at times and he's said things that definitely should not have been said. That can be embarrassing sometimes. At the end of the day, whether or not he looks or sounds "presidential" doesn't matter. What matters is the results and keeping this country secure.

Not trying to bring any controversy, just my opinion on the matter. When it comes to certain things, there is no absolute truth, just opinions on the matter. For me that describes politics perfectly.

Lastly, on a much brighter subject and the reason I joined in the first place, I've loved being on this site for the last six months and hope to stay for a while yet.

It's nice to hear you like it here in AJB :)
A comment on Trump vs Obama. There was lot of critizism against Obama when he was president, like you say. But Obama behaved more or less like presidents before him, regardless of politics.
But in my opinion Trump's behavior is often so outlandish and different from what was considered presidential, I'm not surprised of all the negativity against him.

Not sure about that as terrorists kill for some specific cause or reason whereas in this case the motive for the mass murder remains unknown. It's all about the correct use of terminology than anything at all to do with race.

I am curious, on which remote island you have been living those 8 years.
Perhaps“ whining“doesn‘t hit it exactly, something would match better with „hate“ ;)

Yes, it was endless. The difference is that Trump actually deserves the bulk of it- he invites it on a daily basis.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd prefer politics not to creep into this thread, which I believe was set up to discuss, pay tribute to and try and make sense of the events in Las Vegas. We do currently have an active political thread after all.
It was either that.....or the priesthood

    Agreed, there is a friendly thread for politics, let's keep this for tributes and sympathies -{

My apologies. I posted my comment on the wrong thread. Thought I was on the political thread.

What a load of ****. There's currently no link to terrorism, even though ISIS have claimed involvement, which is unsubstantiated.

The killer had no political goal. That makes him a mass murderers, but no terrorist. It has nothing to do with the colour of his skin.

I found some facts about guns and gun ownership in a newspaper:

There are about 335 million privately owned guns in the US (total pop. 325 mill.)
There are about 1.3 million privately owned guns in Norway. (total pop. 5.2 mill.)
57% of Americans live in a household without any guns
41% have guns in the household
3% of American adults own half of the privatly ownership guns in the country.
10% of the Norwegian adult population own all the privately owned guns in the country. Most of the guns are for hunting.

There were 46692 registered shootings in the US so far in 2017.
1863 happened during breaking and entering
    1521 were self defence
    1512 were accidents
    273 were mass shootings

Source: The Trace, Pew Research Center, Gun Violence Archive, Aftenposten newspaper

I think people will draw different conclutions from this, but the numbers are interesting.

I'm surprised there are so many guns in Norway, even for hunting. How difficult is it to get hold of one, Number 24?

To buy and own a gun you must get a permision from the police after they look at criminal reccords, mental illnesses etc. I think you have to pass a firearms safety test too. You have to have a gun locker approved by the insurance companies. The wast majority of guns are bolt action rifles and shotguns.
To buy handguns you have to pass a firearms safety test and having been a member of a pistol club for more than six months. Then you can buy up to four handguns. If you want to have more handguns you must apply to the police and justify it based on what type of shooting competitions you regularely compete in.
You need to justify to the police if you want to own more than a total of six guns.
No civilians ever get a concealed carry permit.
