I also remember getting other promotional emails from Matchless featuring the main poster of Bond in white tuxedo.
Incontrovertibly they had some official license rights.

Markie464646 has it bang on :))

Matchless and their CEO emphatically stated it was theirs...it also could be that Jany used the JV one as a template and her assistants then had matchless make it...though I can't imagine she could not or has not seen the marketing that Matchless has done around this jacket...and if it was another brand why hasn't JV jumped all over this...

    Exactly!
What I think happened is that Jany’s department didn’t secure enough quantity of the sand color jacket from JV in time so she or her assistant commissioned Matchless “an upperscsle UK leather brand” to come up with replicas from that design. As we know they always order 6-8 from the same outfit. So Matchless advertied for the jacket based on the fact that they manufactured it for the movie ((regardless of whether or not the their jacket actually made it In the film)))

This would also explain why Jany is distancing herself from giving Matchless any credit, she never mentioned their name (she even removed the arm logo) as she doesn’t want to upset the guys at JV (very understandable) I also think she wasn’t very happy with Matchless going public with the replica design she requested as a backup to the JV jacket. Nobody seems happy with Matchless so far :)) I doubt we would see anything else for them in a Bond Movie

Did JV even make the jacket in that colour though? I dont think they did (for retail anyhow)

I always presumed she like the JV jacket but it was not the colour she wanted, hence given to Matchless to knock up a replica in custom colour (same as Moncler / Ski Blouson)

I dont think anyone ever found one in that colour! Seems more than likely they had a brown one and got JV to make more in the lighter colour. If matchless made any for the film why the absence of collar hook which is clearly on the screen used jacket?

My personal opinion is she just got confused about the brands as she did with the Tom Ford/Cucinelli trousers. Given the volume of work she does on various films (Harry Potter for example) I think it would be impossible for her to keep straight every article of clothing used in every scene. She obviously likes interacting with the Bond fan community (on IG at least) and seems to enjoy passing on little pieces of "behind the scenes" info. Personally, I really appreciate that about her. I don't plan on reading too much into her comment.

if the jacket was made by JV there will be a lot of p*ssed off Matchless customers (me for one!). I don't see how they would be able to claim so explicitly that their jacket was used in the movie if that was not the case. the marketing is everywhere even in a shop in m,y local high street they have the jacket and Matchless have DC pictured wearing it in the movie. It would be nice to hear from the CEO of Matchless but he probably does not care. If someone else made the jacket then they would have taken legal action by now.

Yeah I'm thinking down these lines, Jv would have had a field day with Matchless, also it could be the complete reverse, maybe Jany initially approached jv for both jackets but was made aware that Matchless already did it in the sand colour?
It was either that.....or the priesthood

The only odd thing is the hooks which kind of gives a bit of weight to her story.

I guess Matchless possibly recycled them from the JV they copied (or found some / made own) and were too lazy to include on the replica

Maybe the hook and eyes were added by the wardrobe department for some practical reason that never transpired onto film?

Does he even zip up the jacket up in the movie??? I can't even remember.

Im guessing hooks simply added by Matchless strictly to replicate the JV they were given to copy since JV used hooks on the Martian Jacket it replicates

does anyone have a pic of the JV jacket that it is meant to have copied? To my mind the style of blouson jacket is pretty generic anyway to claim it is a rip off of a JV jacket....heck my dad used to wear these style leather jackets in the 70s!!

Its pretty blatant due to the collar, panels, split seams and hooks!!!

Ross just picked up the JV version

Thanks Welshboy!!! Very kind of you.....I can see what you mean....nice jacket in any case. I own both the JV and Matchless (I have the beige and two leather versions of the craig blouson) and i think they are all high quality.

Varvatos zip pull has distinct shape and a J?

Not sure how visible it is on the screen

I would say the stand out difference, other than the collar hooks, is the zip pull.

I took this screen cap from the train scene and, to my eye, it looks a lot closer to the zip pull on the Matchless than the zip pull on the JV. Having said that, this was the best shot I could find and it's far from conclusive.

I own neither jacket btw, so have no vested interest, but I do find this whole situation curious.

Maybe a sign Matchless did copy it as best they could then as you would expect JV to have it spot on :D

What seems most logical to me (and this is pure speculation): the JV was sourced first for the film. Obviously, given the amount of scenes it was used in, numerous jackets were purchased. Jany likes the style and wants to use something similar in the Morocco scenes but doesn't like the other colors of the JV (and for some reason doesn't approach JV to ask them to make another color and/or JV is unable to make another color). Somehow Matchless connects with Eon (maybe a Craig suggestion? Maybe they had made jackets for another film Jany worked on?). Matchless says, "We can make the jacket you want" and a deal is struck which includes Matchless being allowed to promote the Bond connection when the jackets go into commercial production. They make the film-used Morocco jacket based (very closely) on the JV. When it comes time to release the jacket to the public for sale, Matchless realizes they've copied the JV design a little too closely and make the changes we've all noticed.

Petty much what I think happened. Matchless also sold the Hinx coat, so was probably already in a merchandising deal with EON.

The only gap for me is why JV didn't also make the Morocco jacket when it is so clearly their design. It seems a little overly complicated to ask one credible company to basically copy another company's work. But who really knows what goes on behind the scenes. Maybe Matchless simply paid more to have their jackets used in the film and wanted exclusivity to promote the Bond/leather jacket connection? And that is why JV couldn't do a similar promotion? As for hiding or removing the details the ID the jacket as Matchless, I don't think there is anything sinister behind it. The wardrobe department is always hacking and slashing bits and pieces off clothing. Look what they did to the Barbour. I'm trying to remember when I last clearly saw a brand label on Bond. The QoS 7FAMs or Levis?

Maybe jv have a Rolex type mentality and wont pay for an item to be used, I dont recall jv making anything out of the racer being used in sp? Or the Martian jacket for that reason.

The badge thing is understandable - it wasnt retail produced at this stage anyhow and Jany would not of wanted logos on Bonds clothes for sure

Wasnt there a story going around that the JV London jacket was basically not ordered but their shop in London raided for stock by production and unused ones returned?

I think the only dubious thing is wether JV were / are aware of what Matchless has done

Just remember that Jany said during that interview with Mr Blair Ballard that Bond's trousers in the enjoying death sequence were Tom Ford, not Topman... So I think she just mixes up things sometimes and who can blame her, it's hard to remember all those things.

Also as a point, Jany worked on the Harry Potter films and (Original) Belstaff was used in those films. Since the original owners of Belstaff now own Matchless which is probably how Matchless got involved and were used for this jacket.

Guys been in film making for over 12 years something I noticed...

Spectre was edited in post production using an “orange” color grade tint.
I’d imagine that probably affected the matchless jacket? The jacket from matchless looks
white/sand colored. The movie version looks more yellow/light brown. Not saying they are not
the same jacket but they do look different. Here’s a few photos from google images but they look extremely different to me! I am tempted to just get an off brand leather yellow/beige jacket...

    And.....

This is from JCrew, seems to be more accurate screen wise although the stitching and collars are different. Color seems more legit?

But you mustn’t mention the Belstaff name in Manelotti’s presence. Bad blood, apparently!

I've always been surprised that film/production companies don't keep a detailed list of what items are purchased and used for production. I know if i had bought the Matchless jacket and found out that it was really created by John Varvatos i would be pretty angry. Maybe when Bond 25 finishes filming we can get the production team to release a list of what items were used and from what brands which would alleviate this type of situation and save people from buying the wrong item!
I know where you keep your gun!
