Michael Apted was a prolific documentarian as well, though he had made some features prior to TWINE.

Ian Fleming wrote Casino Royale. CR was more faithful to the novel than any Bond film since OHMSS. P&W added a number of action scenes, which they're good at, and had an assist from Paul Haggis (a much more accomplished screen writer). It will be interesting to see what the writing credits look like for Bond 25.

No love from Rex Reed for "White Boy Rick," directed by Yann Demange. Rex gives it 0/4 stars saying:

"French director Yann Demange, who displays no knowledge of anything resembling character development or plot trajectory, fills the gaps between beatings and gunshot wounds with subplots that add up to nothing more than narrative clutter."

Not sure that's the direction for Bond 25.

if they don't know if the villain is Russian or Arab yet, how far could they have gotten into the plot? that seems like a basic starting point that needs to be decided very early and the story could go completely different directions depending on which they choose. If they just swapped his nationality/origin story mid-film, they'd have to also throw out a lot of dependent plot elements or else it wouldn't make sense anymore.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. Rex Reed's career has been built on bitchy, petty attacks on minor issues in films. You could fill a book with the number of bad reviews he's written of now-classic films.

Reviews appear to be mixed for White Boy Rick. '71 is a very good film. I still also like Anthropoid director Sean Ellis for Bond 25 but I don't know if he is even in the mix.

I agree that he shouldn’t be taken seriously. He complained that the New York scenes in Spectre didn’t have enough traffic! :s Poor man must be senile.

I looked up the review for my own entertainment. I didn’t see any mention of New York (he says Rome’s streets are empty, which is accurate) but there were still a ton of head scratching comments...

“Bond escapes in a helicopter with no pilot”

“Next stop is Rome, followed by the Austrian Alps, Morocco and a satellite in the middle of the Sahara called Spectre.”

“Craig remains poker faced from start to finish, his beefcake days emerging from the surf in an X-rated black Speedo gone”

“Miss Moneypenny is now a pretty office worker who resists the 007 charm without leaving her desk.”

“The frisky Bond ladies no longer disrobe, leaving luscious Monica Bellucci and brainy Lea Seydoux reduced to the status of walk-ons.”

Someone altered the review. When it was first published, this was the text Rex Reed wrote:
In all fairness, Mr. Mendes stages a few supersonic chases on water, snow and in the empty streets of both Rome and New York where nothing moves, resulting in a “been there, seen that” effect. Rome without motorcycles and gas fumes, and Manhattan without jaywalkers and traffic jams should tell you something about how much Ian Fleming’s popular Bond stories have degenerated into little more than contrived, formulaic fairy tales. The only thing pedestrian you see in Spectre is the script.

Two mentions on New York was not an accident. He clearly was not paying attention. He must have confused London for New York.

After I saw Spectre, I stood outside his apartment yelling at him for his stupid review. Actually, I was only standing outside of his apartment because that's where the bus stop is. He lives in John Lennon's old building!

I agree that who the villain is is central to any plot. Boyle apparently casting an Arab actor when we're all told that the Boyle idea was a new cold war and that's why we get the Russian casting call with a readiness to consider Balkan actors is even more bizarre. And where do the Finnish actors fit in with Balkan-Russians?

One also has to wonder about this great Boyle idea if Hodge's script was a version of the P&W treatment. Treatments can be very long and detailed or they can be as short as four pages. How would Boyle's idea fit into a long and detailed P&W treatment? Any sufficiently different idea would surely be very disruptive to any storyline P&W's treatment had.

As some people have said here, EON has learnt from the Sony hack, but I don't think its super secrecy, I think it's disinformation, so the picture is completely confused.

The entire first half of CR was original Purvis & Wade material.

The second half of CR did use material from Fleming's Casino Royale, but the card game was changed to Poker from Baccarat and there's no collapsing Venice building in the CR book.

That depends on how central the origin of the villan is to his evil plan. If his plan is motivated by personal issues, his nationality can be decided pretty late in the game. I hope the villan isn't motivated by being Arab or Russian, because that would probably mean he is a jihadist or Russian nationalist. I'm not sure we need Bond movies about that just now.

I hope this film doesn't end up being a "too many cooks in the kitchen" type situation where there's a lack of coherent vision.

I hope this film doesn't end up being a "too many cooks in the kitchen" type situation where there's a lack of coherent vision.

I think that will depend on when the film is made. If it’s shot in 2019, whoever directs is not likely to have much influence on the screenplay given the quick turnaround. So it might end up being a fairly unified Purvis and Wade vision, for better or worse.

2020. HAHAHAH what a joke. 5 years, 5 GOD DAMN YEARS break. Longer than between Quantum and Skyfall.

This movie's gonna be a flop, anyone noticed there is a correlation between messy pre-production and the final effect? Take Marvel for instance, working like a charm, everything always on schedule or even before schedule and the movies are absolutely fantastic. But I can't remember a movie which had director problems, script problems, leading villain problems and ended up being great anyway.

Given the length of time between spectre and Bond25. I now agree with the suggestion that, we should get a new actor, to carry the films
    Forward. :#

I disagree. Some of the best Bond films had messy productions.I believe TSWLM had a messy pre-production and that film was an out an out 10/10 classic. Goldeneye had a mess production but that was bona fide absolute classic. George was a pain during OHMSS and I know that disrupted quite a bit. It's usually the rushed jobs which create chaos (QOS, TMWGG) but even then those two films are great.

In the same time ,five years we had, Dr No, FRWL, Goldfinger, Thunderball, YOLT, just how hard can it be ? I am not hopeful and can see this being worse than the car crash of Spectre.
Sell it off to Netflix/HBO/Amazon and give us period based series following the original books .

I know this director is used to filming "fast" and efficiently, but also on point...anyone seen first Season of True Detective?.....this was posted in Variety:

Cary Joji Fukunaga will direct the new James Bond film, the producers announced Thursday. The 25th Bond installment will begin filming in London, at Pinewood Studios, on March 4, 2019, with a worldwide release on Feb. 14, 2020, a few months after its original target date.

Fukunaga, who won acclaim for 2015 war film “Beasts of No Nation,” replaces Danny Boyle, who exited the project last month over differences with producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson and returning star Daniel Craig.

“We are delighted to be working with Cary,” Broccoli and Wilson said on Twitter. “His versatility and innovation make him an excellent choice for our next James Bond adventure.”

Fukunaga won an Emmy in 2014 for directing the entire first season (eight episodes) of “True Detective” and giving the crime series a cinematic look. Even so, he was not on many – or any – Bond watchers’ radar as Boyle’s replacement. Speculation had centered on Bart Layton, director of “American Animals”; S.J. Clarkson, who has been chosen to direct the next installment in the “Star Trek” franchise; and Yann Demange, the helmer of new release “White Boy Rick.” Demange had been considered a strong contender during the first round before the job went, temporarily, to Boyle, and again during the new search.

Five years is a long gap but better late than never. ;) On the plus side, the first American Bond director.

I doubt Bond 25 will flop. It's possible the audience may be a little bored of Craig - five years is a long time between his films - but I can't imagine the film flopping.

Bond 25 won't flop, I'm sure. Craig is loved by the general audience, they don't really notice a 4-month delay. But as a fan since 2005 it's not really great with the gaps... 2 years, 4 years, 3 years and now 5 years. I'd be nice if the next guy would like to speed it up to 1 movie in 3 years. This 4 month delay isn't Craigs fault, but the 3+ year in this case is. It's understandable that a actor needs rest, but this is just too long imo. But I'm looking forward to see Cary Fukunaga, hoping there will be some FRWL vibes.

Productions are different these days like they were in the 60's. You just can't make a film a year. If anything, Im just happy we are getting another Bond film. And there's no one to blame. Sometimes life gets in the way. Having said that, a film every three years would be nice.

Marvel can make a movie every year for two reasons.

    1. Disney money (not just in terms of paying their talent but ensuring they have no scheduling conflicts and multiple movies in production at the same time.

    2. They don't make a film every year with the same actors. Or those films are ensemble movies which require less screen time for an individual role.

The comparison would be Disney/Marvel releasing an iron man movie every year that solely focused on Tony Stark. (Even though that is technically less of a commitment than Bond because at least a third of the film can be suit CGI and voice over.
