Ragnar Ulstein (19th of April 1920-3rd of December 2020)

Ragnar Ulstein (99) was a Special Operations Executive SOE) agent and later a historian. He escaped to Britain from occupied Norway in 1941. Later he took part in a commando raid in the Lofoten islands, kayaked alongside German ships and attached limpet mines to them and trained guerillas in Sogn and Fjordane county. He was also trained as a diver and piloted an electric underwater kayak. If that sounds Bondian to you it may be because Ian fleming planned the operation. You can read more here: https://www.ajb007.co.uk/topic/51043/the-real-stories-from-the-world-of-espionage-thread/page/3/

After the war Ragnar Ulstein became a historian focusing on the war and especially restance work and inteligence. He probably spoke to more members of the resistance than any other person. He also did a lot for WWII veterans.
I met Ulstein once, when I was a student. He talked to us about the illegal refugee traffic across the North sea.

Since he's just made his last ourney I'd like to tell you the story of when he came home after the war. He was working as a Commander and instructor for guerillas in the mountains further south when the peace came. He had no contact at all with his parents in the four previous years, so he hurried home. His parents him on the stairs of the house. Ragnar shook their hands, but he was too owerwhelmed by feelings to talk. He just walked into the living room and started playing the house organ, the only ways he could get release for his emotions. Later in the day when he had calmed down an elderly couple was standing on the steps of the house. When Ragnar escaped to Britain he was traveling on a stolen fishing boat with a small group of people. As they were about to leave a 17 year old boy jumped onboard and refused to leave. Later in Britain the boy became a fighter pilot. Sadly he was killed in the last year of the war. The old couple were his parents. A few days earlier they got a letter about their son's death, and now they were hoping desperately Ragnar could tell them it was all a joke. Ragnar had to tell tehm the news was true. The couple turned back without a word. Ragnar Ulstein saw them walk all the way to their house, the longest walk in their life.

Yes, his episode was certainly one of my favourites.

He also had a decent part in one of my 'guilty pleasure' films, Mosquito Squadron, as navigator to David McCallum's character.

    RIP Claudine Auger

Domino was a character that took quite a while to grow on me. And I think it is because I've always been a big fan of Molly Peters and Luciana Paluzzi's roles in Thunderball that Claudine Auger never stood out to me so much. But in recent years I've really come to appreciate her role in Thunderball more. And looking through all of the behind the scenes and promotional stills on Thunderballs.org has also helped grow my appreciation :p .

Hard to believe its been 20 years since Desmond Llewelyn (Q) left us, I still remember reading about his death from a car accident online despite the passage of time. It was a big shock to me, especially since I had just read his autobiography a month before. I like to think he and Sir Roger Moore are once again sharing a good laugh in Heaven.

I can't help thinking that it is mostly Roger having a good laugh at Desmond's expense. :))
