Perhaps the saddest legacy of the film though, is it shows that no matter how much effort " a competitor" puts into a Bondesque production, if the money and time is not there, it won't hold up. Kevin McClory kept bogging things with repeated attempts to redo the story. How many of us heard the tired "Have you heard the latest?" regarding Warhead 2000.
Did you know Pierce Brosnan approached McClory in the early 90s, with backers and a whole team, to try and start his own rival Bond film up? Brosnan's idea, not McClory. That was news to me until very recently.

I've seen the movie for the first time in English - that's how long I haven't seen it as since 20 years or so, I am only watching the 007 movies in the original language.
The first that strikes out how badly Connery's akshend is. It seems that he really doesn't care anymore.
Another thing is Basinger's face. I am all for a casual blonde and I think that she has a phantastic body, but what happened with her face? It seems to be swollen up for most of the time - I really haven't enjoyed looking her in the face.
What struck me yesterday as well is how lazily the movie is done.
After all the years, that McClory was fighting for this project, you would imagine that he'd put a bit more effort into it - something like a Peter Hunt directed movie after all the years when he was banned in the cutting room.
Latest at the first test screenings it must have been clear, that Largo's death was not really a highlight of the movie.
If I did not know GE, I'd say that the music would never have passed EON's smell test.
And in so many aspects, NSNA reminded me of an episode of The Professionals without the great action and the coolness factor. The Professionals infact show, that a good action piece is not about fancy and expensive set and sunny locations.
I liked Barbara Carrera in this one, but no way she can be level with Paluzzi.
Different with Brandauer: I did not really like him back then but now 20 years later - I find his performance pretty good.
But I'd still rank Celi higher because he's more of a secret to me than Brandauer's Largo is.
My initial plan was to watch FYEO and OP in a row for the next round, so it would have been TMWTGG now, but I agree, that we should watch OP now as a straight comparison and in context.

I’m not even sure Celi is the best villain in TB: I kind of wish they’d had the balls to use Paluzzi- she’s much better to watch. Carrera is also great.
One big improvement is that NSNA actually gives Bond a proper reason to go and investigate Largo. In TB it’s nothing much more than ‘Derval has a sister’!

Can someone make sure that canon is still pointing at CR-67?
No way is CR67 canon. For a few fleeting minutes it vaguely resembles Fleming's story, but those minutes are completely outnumbered by farce and non sequiturs. Niven is acceptable as a retired 007, but that's about it. Oh, and the music (while completely not Bondian) is good.
Edit- Orson Welles would have been a good Le Chiffre in a more serious film

And speaking of the "from here" line being re-used, I can never quite believe the balls of Octopussy re-using the 'for poison pen letters?' gag from CR-67's Q scene with the gadget pen, when in CR (the comedy movie) they actually poked fun at how bad a gag it was!
Kim Badinger's character had a brother in NSNA, I remember when I was in high school someone said about a guy I knew: "He looks like Kim Basinger's little brother". I hadn't thought of it before, but he really did look a lot like her )
