Re: Replica Bond Props

Nice work Ed.  I particularly like the Goldfinger tenquilizer gun.  Been following your Moonraker lazer gun builds both here and over at the RPF.  Not a big fan of the movie Moonraker, apart from the poster campaign artwork however your prop making prowess makes me want to add a Moonraker lazer gun to my collection.  Absolutely fantastic!

Thanks Al...I'll check my email.
I know AJB doesn't like to post pics...that's why I didn't show anyones face and just close-ups of the props.

Re: Replica Bond Props

Thanks to Al (SPECTREISLAND) for the great screen capture of the Laser Pistol.
Unfortunetly, it's still a biy unclear but the best I've seen so far of the prop.

I'm thinking the end piece looks like some sort of Fastex side release plastic buckle (see insert)
I realize that's NOT the one used but perhaps a variation of it. Anyone have any ideas or recognize that part used?

Re: Replica Bond Props

Hi Ed,

If I can chime in here, when Al and I were taking those pics off the plasma over the weekend, it looked to me like the end pieces on the sides of the laser were roughly octagonal in shape. They're in shadow in the picture above but if you look at the pic of Drax pointing the gun you can kind of make out the three upper sides and front of an elongated octagon.

We also have an LCD TV, which is brighter than a plasma; we'll try to snap a few pics of the gun off that set tonight after work and if they come out any better we'll post them up.

BTW, the piece is really looking fantastic; I especially love the blue LEDs.

Re: Replica Bond Props

Hi Tony,
Again, thanks for the pics. They are the best I've seen so far.
This drawing gives you an idea of what I think I see.
It's a shame there are no pics of the actual prop with all the components complete. I've seen some but they all seem to be missing the rear part in question.

Re: Replica Bond Props

Hi Ed,

We're emailing you a few more pics, this time off our 52" LCD with the brightness cranked up. The more we look at the pics, the more convinced we are that the rear sidepieces are different between the closeup of the gun lying on its side and the shot of Drax holding it. On the former it looks a lot like the buckle, on the latter it appears to have a very different shape.

35

Re: Replica Bond Props

Just received some better screencaps (THANKS GUYS!!!)  that show a clearer pic of the side piece.

I agree that there seems like a cover appears (on the left side) in the scene when Drax is holding it.

Anyone start to recognize this “Greeblie”

Re: Replica Bond Props

I dont think its an elastick belt clip or anything like that although before the brighter pictures I was thinking the same as you Ed. I gotta admit it did look like that

ok seeing the brighter pictures.. I think its a possible plug battery adaptor fitting .... the design of the gun / prop idea may have been that the guns could be re charged and those two blocks on each side at the back of the barrel in question were the charging bays.. however I dont think that level of technical detail and story went into these prop lazer guns ajb007/lol

ok i think what you possbly need to look along the lines of or think of is a vintage plug / battery fitting... that comes in 2 parts and fits together / clips / slots together to form a shape and it has been simply taken apart in its 2 parts and stuck on each side of the back of the barrels of the lazer guns.

it looks to me as if there is a prong fitting / fixture in the block on the side of the gun in question like an old electrical fitting..

examining these Black laser pistol guns in greater detail certainly the hero prop versions .. although i stated a bit boaring looking and uncool compared to the UZI style lazer guns.. Ithink more work and detail has went into the black villian pistols... than the US Uzi lazer guns..

Re: Replica Bond Props

Hi Guys,
Thanks to my friends over at the RPF (Replica Prop Forum) the Laser Pistol part we’ve been trying to identify…has been…sort of…

We know know that the same part was used as a part on the Imperial AT-AT driver helmet.
I know it's hard to tell from the pics you see but I have much larger pics and that IS the same part!!!

I’ve written to someone who may be able to ID the part even further…stay tuned.

Special thanks again to Tom & Al for providing great photos which is now leading us to the part. Nice team effort between AJB & RPF….Congratulations to all.

Re: Replica Bond Props

Hi Ed, the more I look at the two pieces, the more I think they are not the same piece. My 49 years old eyes see many differences in the pics.

Similar, but definitely not the same.

I had all my colleagues here at Juvenile Court look at them as well just for the heck of it, including our police detectives on the scene, and the consensus is that the two pieces are similar but definitely not the same. For what it's worth.

Re: Replica Bond Props

AWWW...C'mon!!!
I was so happy we had a good lead...LOL

Lets wait to see what I hear from the guy that has that part. Maybe it'll help to see it at the same angle as on the prop.

Regardless...I think it's SO close...I would be glad to use it.

Re: Replica Bond Props

Yeah Ed,  Maybe when you get the part and look at it from the same angle, you will be able to determine if that is it. Of course if indeed it is, what about the hooded parts seen when Drax is holding it? Which one are you going with? LOL

Besides, you don't want to have another Grail search on your hands and never finish the piece. LOL

At some point you'll have to go with what you've got and move on to something else.  Even the film makers didn't know from one scene to another which prop was being filmed and that it was going to drive us crazy 30 years later trying to figure out what pieces were used. This thing had more changes than a chameleon - LOL

Re: Replica Bond Props

Ed,

As Arthur C. Clarke once said, "no work of art is ever finished, it is only abandoned". ajb007/lol

Like my brother said, I very much doubt the producers worried about the prop's visual continuity from one scene to the next. They probably never envisioned the day when we'd all be scouring the net and taking high-resolution vidcaps in pursuit of building a replica.

Even if you don't find the exact piece - and the ones you've shown are at the very least from the same family - I still think the gun looks fantastic and is more than good enough to satisfy any discerning Bond collector.

BTW, as an off-topic sidenote that you may find interesting given your past involvement: don't know if you were aware but Hasbro bought the rights to the technical blueprints and specs for Force FX Lightsabers from the now defunct Master Replicas. They had been re-releasing existing models (Anakin, Vader, Yoda) but are now releasing original pieces as well. A Count Dooku FX just went on sale and an Episode I Obi Wan is in the pipeline as well.

Re: Replica Bond Props

"....what about the hooded parts seen when Drax is holding it?

Well...just as I had hopes of finding the right part YOU had to bring THAT up!!!...LOL

Seriously, I agree with both Al & Tony...You could go crazy trying to find the exact same part.
To give you an example....when the Yoda Lightsabre was put together, the "extra" parts were just parts that we thought looked "cool" and looked like they belonged on it. Very similiar to what I did with the interior of the cutaway props. In both cases the parts were salvaged parts that originally came from old model kits, VCR's, Beta VHS player, VHS & Beta tapes, radios, computers, disponsable cameras, etc, etc, etc.

Anytime something breaks around my house it gets dismantled and I set the parts and screws  in plastic bins in my workshed. Eventually....they get re-used.

And you're right...no one ever suspected we would be able to not only OWN the movies to watch at our leisure but to have the ability to pause, zoom in and frame advance one frame at a time so as to scutinize every minute detail...   Ah, we ARE a crazy lot....LOL

And yes...I knew about the Hasbro/MR lightsabers.

Re: Replica Bond Props

Hello everyone,

A friend of mine, who is an Emmy winning makeup Artist, sculpted this gold bar replica from “Goldfinger”….You know… The one that's part of the 1940 smelt from the Weigenhaler foundry at Essen.  It was part of a smelt of six hundred that vanished in 1944 when the Nazis were on the run.  It's from the bottom of Lake Toplitz in the Salzkammergut.

He had 12 of them cast and has been selling them on and off for the past year.

He’s down to the last three and highly doubts he will be doing a 2nd run. I suggested posting the photos on the board in case anyone may be interested.

The original was sculpted then cast in resin. It was then dipped in nickel, then copper and finally plated in 24K gold plated. It's a hefty 2 lbs. and It's cold to the touch

Another fun part of this project was researching the info about the gold bars mentioned in the film.

I never knew that the information really was factual. The Nazi were on the run from the Allies and stopped at Lake Toplitz to dispose of the gold bars they were carrying by tossing the gold into its murky water.

The most disturbing part was that the gold bar, like the one we see in the film, was made by melting and recasting the gold confiscated from the concentration camps…watches, jewelry, even teeth!!!!  VERY eerie!!!!!

The gold bar comes with a “Receipt of Property” form signed by both Bond as well as Major Boothroyd when he drew it from Q-Branch as well as being wrapped in the green felt seen in the film.

Because of the nature of this prop having Nazi markings and easily fooling anyone into thinking this may be, in fact, a real gold bar he is limiting its sale to the USA only.

I thought it worthy to at least, let everyone see his fine work in recreating this replica.

Re: Replica Bond Props

The previous comparison photo I had posted showed a replica Star Wars Helmet and an enlarged area showing the part used on the Moonraker Laser.

Here is ALMOST the same photo…however, this photo shows one of the real Star Wars helmets used in the film with that part.

For comparison purposes, I left the replica part in the upper left side and the original part on the lower left side.

Re: Replica Bond Props

Yes Ed, that's more like it. The original part from the real helmet is a dead ringer. The riddle of the Sphynx has been solved. A heavy burden has been lifted.  ajb007/lol

Now the question becomes, is the part available or can it be duplicated in quantity as needed?

Or -maybe, it would have been easier to leave the two wheels in the first place - LOL -LOL

Re: Replica Bond Props

"Maybe it would have been easier to leave the two wheels in the first place"

What makes you think I took them off...LOL

Regardless...the wheel-version...is MY version...

If I can ever find that elusive part...I'll make that version too.

I discovered a LOT of Star Wars fans are also searching for that darn thing to complete their replica helmets. Which is good as there are more eyes looking for us as well.
