Just saw this one again yesterday.  It ages like fine wine.  It's a much deeper film than I originally thought.

Re: Pros and Cons: Octopussy

Pros:

- The PTS - mysterious and intense - it comes across to me like something Fleming would
  have written.
- The auction.
- Bond vs Soviets
- Circus cover to smuggle in bomb.
- Faberge eggs (Property of A Lady)
- Old fashioned stunt work - train fight, horse/plane chase, plane fight.
- Bond getting onto the train, confronting Orlov.

Cons:
- The whole "Octopussy" joke.  It was a pet in a Bond short story and a Fleming
adolescent sex pun.  I don't think he ever envisioned it as the title of a major
Bond film.  I would have preferred that it had remained just the name of the pet
(and certainly not the name of Maud Adams character or circus).  Most would
probably disagree, but I wished the film had been given a different title.

- The infamous Tarzan yell and the whole sit command with the Tiger as well as
the interchange with the tour boat.  All done just for cheap laughs as typical
in the Moore films.  However, as usual, it only undermines being able to take
the rest of the film with any amount of seriousness.

- Q scenes.  Again, strickly put in for laughs (like the flaccid rope trick) - and
I still don't know why Q has to kit Bond in the field all the time or why the Service
would have hidden weapons research labs all around the globe (or how it could
afford them).  Yes, I do want Q to kit out Bond, but I would prefer it done in
M's office or in the London labs.  He would still get the same amount of screen time.

- Bond's wardrobe changes.  Now's he's Superman?  In a flash he's a clown or
out of a gorilla suit (without getting the attention of someone in the same room?).

- He tumbles off a moving train with the villain without being injured.  EON's
  SuperBond still lives!

- Bond/Q in the hot air balloon.  Really?  What is Q doing there?  Why wouldn't
Bond have entered with the troupe on the ground?

- Theme song.  Pretty tepid - would have been fine for the end credits, but
certainly too romantic for the main theme.

Summary.  It's one of Moore's best entries. A clever, more complex plot involving
the Soviets, a circus, smuggling Russian jewels and a nuclear threat.  Had it been written
with a more serious attitude like FYEO, had less farce and a better title, it would have
made a film I would watch more often and placed a few more notches up in my
favorites list.

Re: Pros and Cons: Octopussy

Fine points CA  ajb007/martini
Every time I watch OP it goes up in my estimation.
I have even got to the stage where the so called comedy moments don't bother me too much anymore - but if those comedy moments were taken out, and the film was played more seriously it would possibly be Moore's best. Although the scene in which Bond goes to check his watch whilst wearing the gorilla outfit cracks me up everytime.
Great characters, locations, music, action, great film!

Yes.  The circus for example.  Yes, it was full of clowns, but it really was a tense moment.   Hundreds of people looking for some escapist fun realize that there is a bomb about to go off.  Octopussy in conflict.  Kamal on the run.  Etc.

Re: Pros and Cons: Octopussy

Pros:

-Excellent PTS (Love that Acrostar mini-jet!!  ajb007/bond )
-Both circus and Indian milieus add to the Bond canon culture
-Intriguing Cold War story
-Nice gallery of villains in this film
-Both Maud Adams and Kristina Wayborn look gorgeous here  ajb007/biggrin
-John Barry's score is terrific
-Roger Moore in excellent form here

Cons:

-Moore really should have quit after this film; it would have made for an excellent swansong for him

"Well, he certainly left with his tails between his legs."

Moonraker brought the franchise on new levels in so many regards - it was absolutely important that EON made it.
And it was important that the established actor pulled the movie - just like Connery with TB ,Brosnan with DAD and Craig with SF.

True.  Moonraker was influential, which is different from being good.  People tend to remember a standout a scene or two from a movie rather than how it coalesces together as a whole.

We should keep in mind that the audiences often have very much different opinions than us 007 NERDS.

I am pretty sure that the normal guy connects Connery more with GF than TB and I am sure that the majority has very positive memories for MR and the Roger Moore association. I don't want to use the term "Casual Audiences" in that context  ajb007/mad

For decades, 007 talk meant dopey girls (oh, James... ajb007/rolleyes ), explosive cars and gadgets - elements which are not appreciated very much by the 007 diehards

I like it. I wouldn't listen to it if it wasn't part of the franchise, but it's a good little Bond song.

I have to disagree. Moonraker is actually a very good film. It has a simple story, but it's effective. It has some of the best locations of any Bond film, and it uses the locations most effectively. The visuals are great, and the film has very high production values. These days it insults Bond fans because it doesn't take James Bond seriously. But that in no way prevents it from being a good film. I agree with Higgins on its importance. It kept the Bond series alive and relevant. Bond fans, casual moviegoers and critics at the time loved it.

It's fine, but pales in comparison to the songs before and after.

Re: Pros and Cons: Octopussy

All Time High is a good song.

I think the title Octopussy f***ed it over because no one in their right mind would make a song called that, so they had to go a safer route.
