Bond in uniform

James bond has worn his navy uniform in only three movies.
These of the medal ribbons and patches he wears on the uniforms.
You only live twice 1967. (The one in the middle)
The spy who loved me 1977. (The one on the right)
And Tomorrow never dies 1997. (The one on the left)

I think it's time that James Bond wears his uniform again!
I think Daniel would look at amazing in one.

Agree! I for one would love to see Bond in his Naval uniform again. It's long overdue and you're right DC would look good in it. I also think seeing Bond in his 'work clothes' gives the character even more depth and realism.

If not in Spectre then hopefully in Bond 25.

I can't see this happening. Short and stocky people rather don't tend to look in uniform... Hopefully Bond 25 will have a new Bond, so it just might work.

If it fit well, Craig could look good in a uniform. I'm not sure he'd be willing to wear a uniform that fit properly, and I'm guessing that wearing a uniform a size too small breaks some dress code.

Daniel Craig is contracted for a fifth Bond film, though contracts can be broken if EON wants to let him go.

As fun as it was seeing the past Bond's in their Royal Naval Commander kit because it reinforced the fact to audiences ignorant of his background that he was a legitimate commander (though they would have still been ignorant that his rank was as a reservist), in none of those scenes (except YOLT) was it logical for him to have been in his uniform. The officers Moore was meeting knew who he was and Wade already knew Brosnan's 007. Some would say he was trying to appear to blend in with the rest of the personnel during those scenes, but there would be no reason for him to do that. Seeing business suited civilians on military bases is a very normal occurrence, so having Bond dressed in his normal attire would have been appropriate. YOLT is the only place where the scene called for Bond to be in uniform as he was being given a naval funeral.

EON would have to script a logical scene to require Craig or any future Bond to be in uniform. Now, if he were investigating something on a base and was supposed to be undercover (for example, the way he was in the PTS of OP disguised as an army officer), then it would make sense.

Sadly to me I think the moment DC could have worn an RN uniform was at M's funeral. But that moment is gone (maybe return to the service when he retires or becomes the new M now there's a thought). However based on his bio some of his expertise (free falling, piloting aircraft etc) have all come from prior military service so reality is that should not be lost on any audience.

A small nod in that direction would not hurt many other parts of his past have been acknowledged so why not (exploding pens we don't go in for that anymore etc)

    Just my opinion

    Cheers :007)

Actually what I noticed from original post is 60's Bond wore a rack of medals, 70's and 80's Bond wore less and 90's Bond was back up there. Pretty much mirroring the operational opportunities of each era. That said given the last 20yrs and other service and celebratory medals he would need a 50 inch chest to wear them all :-) interesting sign if the times I would say.
My name is Bond, Basildon Bond - I have letters after my name!

In case anyone is interested the decorations are:

TND: Royal Navy Pilot wings, SBS parachute wings (Horizontal top distinguishes them from SAS parachute wings).
Top Row: An unknown award of the British Empire, Distinguished Service Cross, General Service Medal
Bottom Row: UNPROFOR (Yugoslav Wars), UN medal, Rhodesia Medal

    YOLT:
Top Row: Order of St Michael and St George (CMG), India Order of Merit, 1939-45 Star
Mid Row: Atlantic Star with unknown rosette, Pacific Star with Burma rosette
Bottom Row: Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45

    TSWLM:
Naval General Service Medal, General Service Medal

That's more or less right Ian, though when I researched these a few yrs ago I was convinced that the unknown order is simply an OBE, and the only clasp that made sense with the Atlantic star was the france Germany star...

I feel that's a DSO, not the Indian order of merit ( much more Bond), and the para wings are the wrong ones.

I hope the close up shots help convince you.

I concur Paul, although I believe the Green Purple Green is called the General Service Medal ( GSM ) not the CSM {[]. And from the BD It's a rosette clasp on the Pacific Star not the Bar that you have, no such thing for this medal.

Okay, so I've had a think about what Daniel Craig's Bond would wear in terms of awards etc.

I've used the military record that was written up around the time of Casino Royale as a starter and this is what I've come up with...

    bond_awards.jpg

Along the top: CMG and Op Granby Campaign Medal
Middle Row: UNPROFOR (Yugoslav Wars), UN Yugoslavia Medal, Iraq Medal, OSM Afghanistan
Bottom Row: Accumulated Service Medal, Queens Golden Jubilee, Queens Diamond Jubilee, Naval Long Service Good Conduct

Then: SBS Parachutist Wings, Fleet Air Arm Pilots Wings

Hopefully I got the order of wear right...

    Ian

Order of Wear looks good to me, I would probably have thrown in the DSO as well between the two top row decorations and prob a GSM for NI, although that may have been more Box territory than 6. {[]
  • IanTIanT Posts: 573MI6 Agent
I thought about the DSO but in Skyfall when M is writing his obituary the only post nominals are CMG so hence no DSO

Thx Andy... Have been uncomfortable about that rosette since I did the research 3 yrs ago... And u didn't quibble when I posted it on here :o

I've scanned the film and other pics and can't make my mind up... It looks like a clasp ... Then it looks like a rosette... And I couldn't find anything that said there was no clasp and it had to be the rosette... If u find it pls post.. Put me out of my misery.... :#

However, it's rare I disagree with you, the obi one of military regalia...

Yep great thread Andy.... To think we didn't know each other then.... And now we exchange cartridge fumes .... :007)

But until I see a clear pic I'm not convinced it was a rosette , even though it should have been!

Out of interest, when Would Bond be expected to wear his uniform ?
In YOLT, as he was getting buried I can see him in uniform, with
TSWLM, apart from being on an admiralty base, I don't know why
He'd need to be in uniform, apart from looking good on film. The same
Goes for TND. So I'm sure there must be an etiquette to when you should
Wear it ? Or can you wear it when you feel like it ? :)
"I've been informed that there ARE a couple of QAnon supporters who are fairly regular posters in AJB."
  • IanTIanT Posts: 573MI6 Agent
Generally it would be worn when on duty. So, in TSWLM when Bond is in Faslane naval base he would be perfectly within his rights to wear it, especially if more senior officers were wearing theirs - a matter of simple military etiquette (TBH I can't remember if M et al were in uniform or not).

As for TND you could argue that to be less obtrusive on a military base Bond would slip his uniform on to become a "faceless" navy officer rather than drawing attention to himself arriving in mufti. Now I know the CIA bods were not exact inconspicuous but when has the US government ever been subtle? See below:
