Most "Quintessentially Iconic" Bond film...

If you were asked what (IYO) is the "Most Iconic" Bond film, what would be your answer?
(We're basing our answers on which Bond film we think contained the majority of ingredients of the Bond Formula, is instantly recognised by people when the name James Bond comes up, and made a massive impact on the series as a whole.)

For me, GF and TSWLM stand out as the 2 likely contenders.

Both feature:

-The memorable Bond Girl
-The cool, flashy Bond Car
-Flamboyant Bond Villain
-Larger-than-life Villain's Henchman, with notable feature(s)
-Cool, witty one-liners
-Memorable title song
-The Gadgets

While I am sure many would say GF, I think TSWLM wins this one. The reasons being:

-Stromberg is a far more larger-than-life villain than Goldfinger
-Jaws is more memorable than Oddjob
-The sets are alot more opulent
-While GF established the Bond Formula, TSWLM perfected it
-TSWLM features the opulent Villain's Lair (which gets destroyed in spectacular fashion)

So those are my thoughts on the matter. Over to you.
"Well, he certainly left with his tails between his legs."

    I think it HAS to be Goldfinger just because it did it first and 'set' the formula -{

    Plus the theme tune is the most 'iconic' of the whole series {[]

    TSWLM, IMO, is the last of the iconic Bond films. And OP is probably the last one of the great first era. GF is usually rated more highly for the qualities that you mentioned but let's look at these two films objectively:

    -The memorable Bond Girl: Agent XXX. A Russian agent who is not only a Bond equal but also seeking to avenge the death of her partner is more memorable. She also has a relatively longer role

    -The cool, flashy Bond Car: A well maintained 60s AM will fetch more than a well maintained 70s Lotus

    -Flamboyant Bond Villain: You sealed the deal for GF by adding the world "flamboyant"

    -Larger-than-life Villain's Henchman, with notable feature(s): Jaws is literally larger than life

    -Cool, witty one-liners: "I expect you to die, Mr Bond"

    -Memorable title song: GF

    -The Gadgets: GF mainly because of the cool tracking device

    So based on your criteria, it is 5-2 to GF

    However on my "ratings" thread, both GF and TSWLM ended up with equal points:
    45 = GF and TSWLM

    So {[] to these two great films!

    YOLT, has been parodied by so many comedians over the years. With
    So many versions of the screen Blofeld +cat, ninjas or commandos
    dropping down on roles etc. It obviously had a huge world wide impact
    on many people. I've ever seen children's TV shows have elements of it.
    So it would get my vote as the Iconic Bond film. :)

    It's definitely Goldfinger.

    So those are my thoughts on the matter. Over to you.

    - Goldfinger is definitely more larger-than life. Stromberg isn't as memorable. His lines aren't as great, his look isn't as unique, he doesn't have as much personality and there's not really anything unique about him as a character.

    - Jaws and Oddjob are equally memorable. Oddjob's hat is as special as Jaw's teeth.

    - Though the tanker set is one of the largest, the Fort Knox set is still one of the most impressive of the series.

    TSWLM did some things a little better than Goldfinger, but that doesn't make the film more iconic.

    YOLT is a good choice too .... Fitting YOLT in the criteria mentioned:

    -The memorable Bond Girl: Aki is definitely very memorable

    -The cool, flashy Bond Car: Bond did not have a car but was chauffeured around in an open top Toyota with cool gadgets. In fact, Bond had the little Nellie

    -Flamboyant Bond Villain: Blofeld

    -Larger-than-life Villain's Henchman, with notable feature(s): #11 has more notable features. In fact, Bond would rather prefer to be killed by her than Oddjob or Jaws

    -Cool, witty one-liners: "Enjoy yourself", "You only live twice, Mr. Bond", "I love you", ....

    -Memorable title song: -{

    -The Gadgets: Safe-cracker, Ninja tools

    :D

    If we're looking at the films which had all "the bumps" (as Cubby put it), it would be Goldeneye, The Spy Who Loved Me and Goldeneye.

    Goldfinger, for sure. It easily started Bond mania and is probably the reason the franchise has lasted as long as it has.

    Identifying any Moore film as iconic is laughable. The Moore films added nothing to the entire series. They were derivative slapstick that cheapened the entire series. Pure crap.

    I think the OP is pretty spot on about this. The only logical contenders would be Goldfinger and The Spy Who Loved Me.
    And yes, I agree with TP that YOLT is certainly up there as well, because of the enormous cult influence it has had on the world and cinema.

    But If I had to name just one, it's gotta be Goldfinger really!

    I would not use the same language or approach, but the sentiment is not a million miles away. I do think we need to be respectful and as Pollyanna said " if you can't say anything nice"...However we need to be carefu re what constitutes a fan, or we will have to start having tests and setting objectives. I regard myself as a lifelong Bond fan, but not of all the films. Even the novels (heaven forbid ) vary in quality. It's dangerous to define someone out of existence even if their tone is poor and designed to inflame. We are a broad Church and strong enough to withstand such stuff

    we don't have to go into discussion on what constitutes a fan or whatever and have to be careful.
    the point is, how he wrote is highly disrespectful towards the movies, to the cast and crew and at last towards the fans.
    And on a James Bond forum, I do not want to hear such a tone! (and I bet I'm not the only one)

    a less confrontational tone, would be appreciated. -{

    'Iconic' doesn't have to mean best. I didn't really like TSWLM but it is iconic of Bond being a 'British treasure' in a comic tradition.

    GF is definitely iconic; extravagant villain, memorable henchman, sassy Bond girl, sets the tradition of a Bond song. I think arguably Dr No is iconic: Honey Ryder coming out of the sea is surely one of the most iconic Bond moments, the theme tune is instantly identifiable, there's a lair, it's set somewhere exotic. I don't think anything has vastly changed from Dr No; GF cemented and added to the iconography but the building blocks were pretty much all there.

    From the modern 'era', can I throw in Casino Royale? The series seems to be moving towards something lighter and I don't think Casino Royale is memorable villain-wise but the romance, the glamour and the torture is- and the suggestion that this interpretation is closer to the source material.

    I'm trying hard not to side on this. I think the tone was wrong, but not offensive in itself. If it is its the mods who will ajudicate. It's close to the line in my view, but thankfully not my decision to make. I think language/attitude like that does not add value to a site like this. I guess I'm that quintessential liberal who may disagree with a point, but defend the right to make it. I have really tried to respond honestly to your question and truly hope that I have. If I felt that a line had been crossed I would not hesitate to wade in in support. Enough said? I hope so.

    I can see your PoV. I have been posting on various forums on subjects ranging from sports, automobiles, economics, religion, politics, government policies and investments, etc. to now Bond films, and have probably seen many different type of posters and have learned to not get too worked up by a post. On the other hand, someone who is new to this world may get too carried away by what someone posts

    Usually, there are two extreme types of posters. Ones that come to the online forum as if it is a formal place where they have to appear their best. And ones who come there to get away from the real world and post their mind w/o worrying about how it would sound to others. And there are others who can strike a balance .... At the end of the day, it is the opinion that counts

    What matters to me is if a person is trolling deliberately and unnecessarily to incite negative reactions. And there are various ways to troll. Unfortunately, it is hard to tell that in a post or two, esp. if you don't know the poster (his pattern) well enough
