James Bond since 2006 (The Post-Brosnan era)

I honestly think James Bond starting going downhill after 2002 and should have ended in 2002 at 40.

I think Daniel Craig is the worst James Bond, and the way TPTB have rebooted the James Bond series since 2006, it's just ruined it for me. Daniel Craig doesn't look right for James Bond, the new Felix Leiter doesn't look right either, and neither does the new Moneypenny. Having said that though, I think Ralph Fiennes is good as the new M and I think the new Q (the young one) is quite good and innovative on the positive side too, in stark contrast to the great elderly Q played by the late Desmond Llewellyn.

I think Pierce Brosnan potentially could have been as great as Roger Moore and Sean Connery and stayed on until the late 2000s/early 2010s, starring in possibly 3 more Bond films, along with Samantha Bond continuing as Moneypenny.

I disagree with just about everything you just wrote so before each comment I won't start with 'in my opinion'.

Daniel Craig is the best Bond since Connery.
The films went down hill from DAF onwards and not until Casino Royale were they back on track. However, Licence to Kill (despite Dalton) is a very good film.
I can't comment on the new Felix Leiter as I am yet to see Spectre.
Naomie Harris as Eve Moneypenny is brilliant, she's gorgeous, a good actress and I hope she keeps the role as long as Lois Maxwell did.
Ralph Fiennes is OK but no Bernard Lee.
Pierce Brosnan I agree with you was a good James Bond (third on my list).
    Ben Whishaw I like.

As much as I dislike the Craig era, that comment has prevented me from wanting to agree with the OP on anything. Wright and Harris were perfectly cast, though Harris' Moneypenny has suffered from poor writing.

Just my opinion but you simply can't argue against good acting.
Jeffrey Wright is a very talented actor, and I have enjoyed his work
outside of Bond, he's fantastic in westworld. As for the beautiful
Miss Harris, I wouldn't have a word said against her, ( I have such a
massive crush on her :x ) although she also is a terrific actor, and infact
    has been nominated for a best supporting actress nomination -{
I think the OP of " not looking right" was an obvious attempt to start an
argument but happily with AJB, it turned into some jokes about bottoms, just
the place to stick such outdated and obscene ideas. ;)

    Totally agree TP.
Jeff Wright and Naomie Harris have never put a foot wrong in their performances. I lament Felix not being in Spectre, I understand his character didn't fit in Skyfalls story but he would have added another dimension to Spectre, here's hoping he returns to Bond 25.
As for them not looking right? OK in terms of the literary characters no they don't but neither does Fiennes as M or Judi Dench, but Bond in modern times should reflect the diversity we live in....Wright and Harris being cast was spot on.

Does Felix Leiter serve much point in the Bond universe? I can understand why Bond needs a close friend in America but I can't imagine Leiter following Bond on missions all over the world! Perhaps Leiter works better in novel form than in cinematic form. He seems a bit one dimensional. I haven't read the new Felix Leiter comic but I guess that fleshes him out a bit, makes him more interesting.

    https://www.dynamite.com/images/TNBondFelix01CovAPerkins.jpg

As for Daniel Craig, he's okay. His casting saw Bond as less of a fantasy figure, someone less aspirational, less of a man you'd like to be, perhaps, but he's popular with casual Bond fans so you can't argue with that. He's redefined the role for the 21st century.

after Casino Royale, book Leiter only appeared in stories set in the USA or sometimes Jamaica. He's not even in Dr No, and I cant figure out what he was doing overseas in Casino Royale. After he gets mangled by the shark two books in he's not really much use in the Flemingverse either.

movie Leiter I think was always a waste of a character. After Jack Lord turned down the recurring role, Leiter's brief appearance every other movie or so just seemed redundant, maybe exchanging some exposition at the airport but there was nothing in the dialog to indicate Bond and Leiter had any history together, and since he was played by a different actor each time there was really no reason to keep insisting he was the same character

by contrast, Bond's friendship with Kerim Bey, Tiger Tanaka, Tracy's father, Colombo, or other similar types in later movies was much more persuasively depicted

I think Leiter's existence in the books mostly had to do with the emerging threat of the Soviet Union and Fleming drew from his personal experience with Americans during WWII. In fictionalizing the UK's role in the postwar, Fleming actually stretched and reversed the roles of the US and UK respectively in the Cold War, making it seem that the UK (of course from the perspective of Bond and the service) was the vanguard, with the CIA in a support role.

During the real-world timeline of the events surrounding CR, the US in the real world had taken the lead in that effort and Fleming was an insider in the US intelligence leadership, which makes it no surprise why his books reveal an affinity for the Americans and most immediately so in the role and function of Felix Leiter. Compared to Bond's other allies like Kerim and Tanaka, they were more like Bond's counterparts from the UK allied countries whereas Leiter was a peer.

Though no direct proof or reference immediately comes to mind, my theory is that Felix Leiter was inspired wholly or in part by Alan Schneider, a U.S. Navy Intelligence officer who was a close friend, confidant and "partner in crime" of Fleming's during the war. When reading the Leiter portions of the books, one can't help but see this kind of buddy dynamics and the friendship with Schneider sheds light as to why Fleming might have been motivated to nostalgically include those experiences in the Bond stories.

Felix Leiter (David Hedison) last appeared in Licence To Kill in 1989 and had his leg bitten off by a shark. To bring him back under another actor is wrong, the characterisation is just...wrong.

As for Moneypenny, Samantha Bond should have continued in the role.

Roger Moore never took Bond too seriously, he was great at charming the women, also, he never hit women and roughed them up like the others did. People say the Aston Martin DB5 was a classic car.
