why "This never happened to the other fellow" was allowed in dialogue?

Was this line a late inclusion after they knew Lazenby wasn't coming back? why was it allowed into the script & deemed necessary. The Bond films have never before or after winked at themselves in this way. Except possibly at the end of LTK when a model creature by the swimmimg pool scene winks as the end credits begin.

That scene was filmed between March and May 69, before Lazenby had decided that OHMSS was to be his only Bond outing, and was purposely included in the script at an early stage.

From Wiki: "To make audiences not forget it was the same James Bond, just played by another actor, the producers inserted many references to the previous films, some as in-jokes. These include Bond breaking the fourth wall by stating "This never happened to the other fellow", the credits sequence with images from the previous instalments, Bond visiting his office and finding objects from Dr. No, From Russia with Love and Thunderball, and a caretaker whistling the theme from Goldfinger".

Yes. There is a theory, mostly by people who feel that the 4th wall break does not fit with the rest of the of the film, that Bond is referring to Prince Charming, picking up her shoes, rather than Sean.
He's still talking right at the camera either way and Im pretty sure that one was debunked by the cast and crew discussing the gag

I think the end of TSWLM with the escape pod window blind dropping (alla a theatre curtain) and the cabaret style rendition of "Nobody Does it Better..", is definitely a wink at themselves.

I always thought the fourth wall was already broken in GF, when Connery is putting the flower in his buttonhole. He looks directly into the camera as though to acknowledge the silliness of the scene. Watch for it here at 2:38:

2 frames don't qualify (which he appears to be looking around the lens, not at it). He could've easily been looking out for guards.

One of the first things a film actor is taught is not to look into the camera -- that clearly breaks the fourth wall, even if for a moment. The director or editor would have caught this if it wasn't intentional in some way. Regardless, it is direct eye contact to the viewer.

How does that bit of dialog relate to Lazenby not returning as Bond?

If anything, it is to acknowledge and lighten the tension that audiences might have to not seeing Sean as 007.

This is the first I've heard of the Cinderella theory though...very interesting.
