They wrote Casino. They didn't write Quantum. They were asked to salvage Spectre, it made $880 million.

And Sony probably made about $50 million profit after costs, according to sources. Not much for a reported production/P&A total cost of almost $350 million. Studio gets 50% of worldwide rentals. $400 million. (25% of gross rentals in China) Bingo. $50 million profit. I'm sure they were thrilled with that. Not.

There are some fantastic writers in the business who could write a far better script than P/W. Everyone who loves this franchise welcomes fresh ideas. On Casino Royale P/W had the blessing of fabulous 60 year old source material.

New writers + new director. Please.

Sony had a bad deal. That's not a reflection on the success of the film. However, financial success doesn't mean something is good. The good thing about Purvis and Wade is that they know the Fleming stories and the character.

Re: Danny Boyle has left Bond25 over 'creative differences'

Yann Demage only has a TV episode to do after White Boy Rick is released on the 14th of September.
I hope Demage or Mackenzie gets the job and they keep the Hodges script.

Re: Danny Boyle has left Bond25 over 'creative differences'

Boyle had expressed doubt over directing a Bond film:

26 March 2013

Having directed Daniel Craig - and HM the Queen - for the opening ceremony's Happy and Glorious segment, is he tempted to throw his hat in the ring? It is a question that prompts a well-practiced response.

"I wouldn't be disinclined, but I'm not really the right guy to make those kind of films," says a director whose sole link to date with so-called 'franchise' cinema was a brief flirtation with the Alien series.

"I like working slightly under the radar, rather than the responsibility of having to deliver to a certain expectation."

But have the Bond team been in touch? With a chuckle, Boyle nimbly deflects the question by repeating that he "wouldn't be the right kind of person to do those kind of films".

Well, looks like he wasn't the right person!  ajb007/rolleyes

Hopefully Craig is not walking. If he's walking I'm selling my whole collection.

That's harsh. You do realize that other actors have played James Bond?

Re: Danny Boyle has left Bond25 over 'creative differences'

Because there is a release date officially on the books (and it’s next year), I expect we’ll have some clarity sooner rather than later regarding a delay. There are shareholders and things of that nature in play so that can’t really drag it out for months on end.

Re: Danny Boyle has left Bond25 over 'creative differences'

Danny Boyle has a talent and reputation for some really original stuff, my own hunch is he was ‘going too far’ .

Everybody should rejoice.

Do you mean you prefer another director?

Or do you mean you know something about the Hodge script that would have everyone frothing at the mouth?

Re: Danny Boyle has left Bond25 over 'creative differences'

When will we know the name of the new director?

Re: Danny Boyle has left Bond25 over 'creative differences'

Maybe his plan was to have Bond become a junkie and dive into dirty toilets.....!

I would assume soon, unless they announce a further delay and we don't get a film until 2020.

Nail on head. And then some.  There’s a point when Bond isn’t Bond anymore.  It’s a blurry line, but there is a line. He isn’t a secondary character in his own film, and he isn’t a soapbox to air political and sexual opinions for the sake of virtue signalling.

Re: Danny Boyle has left Bond25 over 'creative differences'

I hope it doesn't get delayed until 2020. A five year wait would be ridiculous. Not to mention embarrassing for EON considering they already made a press release confirming the 2019 release date.

Re: Danny Boyle has left Bond25 over 'creative differences'

The first four Bond films -- and they were real films -- were all made about a year apart from one another.  Now it takes two, three, four times as long, and the films aren't even as entertaining.

I'm okay with Campbell coming back, but I'd rather they use an unknown director than Mendes.  His films have the same backwards formula -- funneling down to a "personal" showdown with a handful of characters at the end, for instance -- and his action sequences lack tension and energy.  And he'd bring back Newman as conductor, and we'd have to hear that plodding dum-dumdum-dum-dum take on the Bond theme he's recycled.

Guess we won't be seeing another Bond film for a while.  If they keep clowning around, Craig might even quit.

Re: Danny Boyle has left Bond25 over 'creative differences'

My worry is Danny Boyle was a massive coup for EON / Universal as Boyle is one of the few directors whose name the general movie going public (in the UK at least) would know and his directorial 'brand' has cache. There are few directors with that (Nolan, Spielberg, Tarantino, are a few).

Campbell, However much I like his work on Bond (a lot) doesn't have that same cache to a moving going public. Something they may need seeing as Bond has had another four year gap and they are going to want it to pull in similar money as Skyfall and Spectre. Something needs to grab audiences.

Yikes. Well if that’s where it was headed, thank God EON cast him off. I’ll wait an extra year for a proper Bond film if need be. We’ll have plenty of opportunity to watch a bastardized version of Bond once Disney buys the rights.  ajb007/martini

Re: Danny Boyle has left Bond25 over 'creative differences'

If this was a year ago, then Someone would have been correct about many things.  There was a direction for the next film and massive plans around it.  Early this year, things went into free fall and everything changed.  Massively.  But the news today is epic.  Bond dodged a bullet today, and it was Tankbuster sized.

Re: Danny Boyle has left Bond25 over 'creative differences'

I was very relieved to find that Yann Demage and David Mackenzie have a lot of free time this fall and next year. Ideally EON will phone one of them with an offer.
I think Craig will stay on and Hodge's script will be used.

Re: Danny Boyle has left Bond25 over 'creative differences'

Craig definitely won't walk... and just so there's no doubt, the PR people put his name in the announcement along with BB's and MGW's.  ajb007/cool

Yes. Consssssiderably.

Re: Danny Boyle has left Bond25 over 'creative differences'

Bring in Denis Villeneuve. He's a great director. He did the latest Blade Runner.

Pussy Galore: “My name is Pussy Galore.”
Bond: “I must be dreaming.”

Re: Danny Boyle has left Bond25 over 'creative differences'

I'd love to see a Denis Villeneuve Bond film, but he's doing Dune. That project is huge and apparently Villeneuve's big dream for years. I don't think he or Mendes will do Bond25.

He was EON's and Craig's top choice last year but he turned them down to direct Dune instead.
