Very sad to hear about the Star Wars fan who died after his long fight against the evil that is cancer - at least he got his dying wish to see the movie (the uncut version) after a viral social media campaign that included support from the likes of Mark Hamill.
Here is the Star Wars sketch that was made for this year's BBC Children In Need appeal. Featuring (amongst others) Warwick Davis, R2-D2, C-3PO, Lewis Hamilton, Martin Freeman, and The Stig.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has smashed all known records for advanced ticket sales in the US racking up more than $50 million dollars. The advance figure could hit $100 million if sales continue at the current rate. Cinemas will stay open round the clock to try and meet demand for the film. Some have scheduled screenings for unlikely times such as 2am and 5am. There are signs that advance ticket sales for British screenings have also been plentiful, with Disney reporting 200,000-plus purchases in the first 24 hours of availability on the 20th October.

i haven't obsessed about a trailer this much since CR ..... or way back to TOTAL RECALL in 1990!!!
Star Wars: The Force Awakens stormed the weekend box office in the US ($238 million) breaking numerous records. The opening weekend total worldwide is a massive $517 million.
How can it be fair to say it crushes everything in the past when it is shown in more theaters on more screens per, 24 hours a day for the whole weekend? Not to take away anything from the movie because it was glorious, but it would be hard not to top other movies with the amount of opportunities to see it. Both theaters in my Midwestern US town showed it on four screens back to back all weekend long.

True but I was referring to dollar amounts when comparing to other movies including the original 1977 release. With inflation, increased population and more screens how can it not make more money?

If nobody cares to see a film, it doesn't matter what tickets cost, or how many screens on which it is available It's about advance buzz (huge in this case), then quality of the product and subsequent word of mouth once the film has been experienced. If SW:TFA is still playing in March, it will be a fair barometer of the film's overall quality and acceptance---which, as Bond fans, we know are sometimes mutually exclusive. Time always tells.

I saw it today and watched it with a big grin--something I didn't have during any of the prequel films (including Episode III, which I thought was the best of the bunch). It's obvious J. J. Abrams is a fanboy, because the film was like the original trilogy given a fanfic treatment. . . What would happen if a Stormtrooper decided to join the good guys? What if Han Solo fired Chewbacca's crossbow laser? What would it be like to watch the Death Star's death ray from the vantage point of a nearby planet? It was like being a ten-year-old kid in the summer of '77. . .
What a treat it was for me. My dad took me to see Return of the Jedi in the theater on opening night. I was able to do the same with my son with this movie and he was almost exactly the same age.
