    James Bond as created by Ian Fleming should smoke. I guess if we can have a black Felix Leiter and a female M, than anything is possible? :s

    I don't really care as bond has always been a on/off smoker. The longest bond went without smoking is in the moore era for 6 films. The truth is with the nanny nation nowadays it's unlikely we'll see him smoke again. Oh well, here's do Vodka Martinis (Shaken not Stirred of course) -{

    I can understand how people feel about the fact that Flemming's Bond is a smoker and the modern Bond isn't. I can also understand how it is BS for Hollywood to try to be all pc and what not with some things and not with others. I have no problem with any character smoking on screen. But I think we all need to understand that the times have changed and in the movie business they have to accommodate characters' habits the same way they do for the political conflicts in the movie. So I think that the same way we don't expect Bond to hunt down communists should be the same way we don't NEED him to smoke to be a complete character. It is a dirty habit and now that as a society we have finally realized it and stopped glamorizing it's good that we stop projecting it in the media as well. I hardly think that Bond's character is going to suffer because he doesn't smoke, it's completely ridiculous to think that. That's what good acting, writing and directing if for! Christ people I can hardly believe that some people think it is that necessary for Bond to do something so useless. Smoking doesn't create tension or a mood GOOD ACTING does!!! :s

    Of course Bond should smoke. The character was created to be a moral wasteland, not a role model for teenie boppers.

    If the opposite were true, what would Bond be doing shacked up with several girls and killing on a whim... smoking is in the same boat as violence and sex. Bond doesn't say "go be like me". Quite the opposite in fact.

    I'm a smoker and fan of the Literary Bond... but I can't say that I'll miss it, really. It neither adds or subtracts from the plot for me.

    I agree that smoking is no more immoral than violence and (partucularly) sex. However, unlike violence and sex, I think it's unrealistic in that I can't imagine a smoker doing what Bond did in some of the action sequences in CR. Yes, I know, the entire idea of Bond isn't particularly realistic, but IMO having Bond smoke makes it far too implausible.
