In the book The James Bond:The Legacy John Cleese is quoted as saying the Pythons should have done a Bond movie.

That, fellow Bond fans, is one of the greatest "what-if?" movie ideas I have ever heard.

Can you imagine how glorious a Python Bond movie would be?

One question, though. who would have played 007? I guess the obvious choice would have been Graham Chapman...although Michael Palin would probably be the better choice.

Any comments?

    Big, my only response is a NOOOOOO. :o I like Monty Python but I think they should stay as far away from Bond as humanly possible. ;)

    Well, after tackling the Holy Grail, I suppose anything would have been possible. The Monty Python films are more a venue for lunacy, no matter what the subject matter, so a "Bond" film would have been great, and certainly better than Austin Powers, IMO.

    Would it be an official Bond film? I don't mind the idea of a spoof or an unofficial one-off, but would it be an proper Bond film? That I'm not too excited about. ;)

    Dan, this would not have been part of the series...it would be another Python comedy epic...this time about 007.

    Monthy Python would make a great bond spoof, better than that fiascos like Austin Powers, Johnny English, etc etc etc...
    But I also think they should stay in the kind of wacky comedy they know how to make, and keep away from our favorite secret agent, who has already thousands of imitators...

    In Austin Powers's defense, it was more spoofing the unofficial spoof film Casino Royale (1967).

    Well ... perhaps it could have been fun, but after Brian and Grail, a spy spoof would have been somewhat hackneyed in my opinion.

    Still, Agent Nudge Nudge could have succumbed to the charms of the great Mata Pepperpot, while exchanging microfilms strapped to Norwegian Blues.

    The Pythons already spoofed Bond--anyone remember the Pantomime Horse? How could they ever have topped that?

    I think that the troupe would have done a much better job with Casino Royale '67 that those clowns who originally did it came up with.

    Very true, and even a John Gardner reference too. I hadn't seen that one, well found MNL.
