Roger Moore's 5th 007 Film?

What if Roger Moore had completed his Bond cycle sooner? Finished his movies before he grew too old.

The following is based on unused Fleming character names [added an "a" to Spang to make it sound South African] and settings from LALD, MR, DAF, FAVTAK and 007 in New York. I have tried to keep to the old Eon way of casting before actors at the cusp of fame and models, whatever, for females but slightly older because of Rog [including discarded Eon suggestions]. Roger had said he would do no more Bonds after MR so I have set it up that it begins with uncertainty over who Bond is. They also wanted to rush it into production before RM aged too much and capitalize on the success of MR, thus bumping FYEO once again! Kate Bush was allegedly offered MR to sing but turned it down. I figured they would be looking to fillet Fleming as they were going to thread together the short stories by this time. It also touches on the events of the world back in 1980 and tweaks McClory by using "Spectre"-ville and using NY as a location trumping Warhead!

PTS - GUNBARREL FADES IN ON…
A nuclear power plant in upstate NY. Alarm bells signal. Shane Rimmer as a technician picks up red telephone. "We have a problem. China Syndrome!"

CUT TO: M's OFFICE:
"Good God, Mr President. Yes, we're monitoring the situation. Yes, the Prime Minister has assured me we will liase with our Canadian cousins. Yes, Mr President. I'll send our best man, immediately."

M barks on the intercom: "Moneypenny, how's 007 doing with the girl in New York?"

Moneypenny, old faithful: "Last time he reported, he was on top of things..."

CUT TO: ROOFTOPS - 2 OF THEM - THE TWIN TOWERES OF THE WTC, NYC.
A handsome, tuxedo’d man (who we never quite see) is in an embrace with the delectable MARY ANNE RUSSELL, her face obscuring his. She refers to him as “JB” , gets a message, appearing in digital letters on her Seiko wristwatch "PROCEED SOONEST. RETURN - M" and prompts JB to leave. We follow them uptown riding in their limousine, passing Studio 54. Then Central Park. We never quite see his face but our POV is that of a stalker. Hand held camera. Occasionally the view is through a sniper sight. MARY ANNE RUSSELL is complicit with us, occasionally giving us a direct sign. Around NY at night: malevolent, moody, unsettling. We see the couple approaching their rides – a black Lotus Esprit and a big Kawasaki motorbike.

Suddenly the couple are stopped. A NY mugging? Their assailant, disguised in balaclava and combat black, barks orders, in an American accent, at MARY ANNE to frisk the mystery man in the tuxedo known as “JB”. He shouts to hurry. Close-up of female hands caressing the tuxedo, straightening the bow-tie, erotic, not revealing the face of “JB”. The hands come across a secret pocket. The velcro opens (in typical Bond breakaway clothing style) to reveal the small computer tape spool which assailant takes away.

The assailant shoves MARY ANNE into her car as a hostage, the Lotus and they take off. “JB”, still not revealed, quickly picks up his DJ and walks to motorbike, finding radio. “The package is lost. Repeat, package is lost. All units, intercept” The voice is a well-modulated English accent. Dons motorcycle helmet and roars off in pursuit.

A thrilling chase thru NY at night follows. Cars with bazookas and JB fires grenades from launcher while on motorbike at Lotus. The police join in and lots of NYPD cars get smashed. During all this, MARY ANNE leans over to driver, pulls off balaclava to find the friendly, unexpected face of Roger Moore as James Bond and introduces herself.

BOND: I know who your are. And what you are.
MARY ANNE: And what is that, exactly?
BOND: Very good. At what you do, Ms Mary Anne Russell.
MARY ANNE: Well, I'm good at what excites me, Mr...?
Just then some explosion/traffic/hair-raising moment prevents Bond from giving his name.

SHE is the double. Bond was her escape route so as not to look suspicious. She is British Secret Service and the PTS Bond girl. The car is from Q Branch….

Now we can reveal JB aka JOHN BARLOW too. In CB communication with a fleet of cars, “John Barlow here. Get them on the Hudson River Line” Bond can't give his name due to the business of evading BARLOW and his team using a range a new self defence weapons. The Lotus flies into the bay and sinks causing the car to appear destroyed causing BARLOW to think MARY ANNE and kidnapper have died. An unfortunate, violent NY mugging/carjacking episode. But we see Lotus turn into sub and Bond settling down in champagne fuelled embrace with MARY ANNE.

MARY ANNE: "You never did tell me your name...."
BOND (and by God, it's Roger): "Believe it or not, my name really is Bond. James Bond"

FADE IN ON M’s OFFICE WESTMINSTER, LONDON.
M, Sir Frederick Gray - the Minister of Defence and Major Boothroyd aka Q brief Bond on Serrafimo Spaang, a ruthless South African businessman, with global interests, whose Italian father was a compadre of Mussolini. Three Mile Island has discredited nuclear power and the recent revolutions in the Middle East has made oil from that region insecure. Spaang is believed to have funded a humanitarian programme run by Swedish Nobel prize winner, DR SIMONE LATRELLE and her organization, PEOPLE OF THE WORLD to develop a sonic pulse system (SPS) to analyse geological features for oil and minerals. Developed for use in space (“The NASA Space Shuttle will carry one”) to examine planetry formations and in the Arctic to prospect for oil. The spec for the SPS was the computer tape spool Bond and Solange apprehended from NY. Analysis has shown that the project might work. The most expensive task is not mining the minerals and oil but finding it, prospecting for it. With SPS and a totalitarian government, the earth will be an open book. If falls into Spaang’s hands, he may use it for the wrong purposes. Communist insurgents in neighbouring African states and the West’s pressure to end apartheid has left Spaang wanting to do a deal with Russia. South Africa could become a strategic base for the Russians and he could topple the government, becoming effectively, ruler of Africa, marching through countries and cutting the world in half. Spaang is a neo-Nazi and wants to subject the whole of Africa to his dictates. Bond is assigned to go to Stockholm where the scientific breakthrough of SPS is to be revealed to the world for humanitarian purposes at a publicity event at the Zoo (M: "As their press release says, 'to remind us that we humans are still animals'. Funny people, these Swedes!"). Spaang will attend. Bond must put a stop to this and recover as much information on SPS as possible and prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.

"Just a minute, 007" Q finished, handing Bond a pair of expensive black leather shoes. "All terrain formal wear. You'll be going to all sorts of places." Q presses button on tongue of the shoe and steel ice spikes pop out from the sole.

"Nice feat" quips Rog, suave as vanilla!

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN

Aerial shot of the Skansen Zoo and Open Air Museum taking in odd shaped balloons and flotilla of boats in the bay. The annual yachting regatta and balloon festival have maximized the publicity for the POTW event. We zoom in on Bond's black Lotus Esprit Turbo, driving through Stockholm and we trace the car arriving at the POTW event and Bond making contact with Spaang (Quoting his father: "In this pizniss is much RISICO") and SIMONE and posing as a journalist intercut with aerial views of Stockholm, the bay around Skeppsholmen and the Royal Palace give way to animal shaped balloons (this is the zoo). Elephants, cheetahs, giraffes, gazelle, tigers, and then four sharks. Self-propelled and descending. They reach the crowded area near the podium and decant their crew. Four men, camoflagued, combat-geared - SPAANG MEN (SM). Trouble. Coloured smoke bombs, an pepper spray attacks and they disrupt the event. Bond battles an attacker and take Simone with SPS. They run along a raised walkway, suspended above the bay, high enough to allow passing yachts underneath watched from a slanting glazed observation platform. As they run, chased by SM (we see MACE, a goon, in Shark Balloon propelling along and above them), they avoid stream of machine gun bullet hits which smash the glass in observation platform. They run to the gap and leap into midair....

...and onto the mast of a fast, racing, raging upon a tall catarmaran sailing yacht called the King Gustav!

They are caught in the regatta, the race, lunging and twisting in the choppy waters. Sliding down the rigging and onto the deck, they get a purchase. Only to find themselves being shot at by SM, dropping on the boat in the same manner. Human hail. 3 on board, and MACE, the subhenchman in shark balloon now moored to the mast. An awkard fist fight takes place amongst crashing waves and violent collisions with other boats. A water equivalent of the rally chase in OHMSS, shot with the power and authority of the elements, swooping in and around the boat and the regatta. Machine gun fire chugs chunks of the boat apart. Bond hangs one SM on rigging, impales another on protuding catarman. Boat lifts out of water. Takes off shoe and engage spikes, using it a knuckle duster on 3rd who falls spectacularly in the water. Basically, slaloming between other boats in Regatta and subjected to violent machine gun fire, slam bangs, coloured smoke bombs, Bond, Errol Flynn-like, swinging between catarmaran hulls on rigging, tearing through sails, overcomes all but MACE in tethered balloon on mast who slides down on rope only to be pepper sprayed by Bond.

Saving Simone's life, Bond has taken the spool, ready for demonstration at event. She realizes he is a government employee, is contemptuous but he has saved her life, is very handsome and seems sincere. Persuasive. “If SPS falls into the wrong hands, it could mean war all through Africa and the world. You didn’t win a Nobel prize for that, did you?” Bond says he needs to follow it up with the test facility in Canada. Who should he contact there? The top scientist, GALA BRAND.

The beaten up catarmaran sails out of Saltsjon, Stockholm behind.

SIMONE lustily: "How can I be sure I'm doing the right thing?"
BOND: "Well, let's first check that you're doing it right!"

Romantic clinch and fade.

TORONTO, CN TOWER.
After Bond has made contact with GALA at the CN tower restaurant where he explains the problem over a sumptuous lunch and an even more sumptuous view. GALA will need to meet Bond again at a VIP, black tied charity event at the stadium tonight after checking the status and collecting the only other tape spool for SPS. She will lock away the working papers but not give them to Bond just yet.

BLACK TIE EVENT AT HOCKEY STADIUM, TORONTO
There is a show on the rink with cheer leaders, kid hockey plays doing puck exercises, dancing girls and floats and a little "drama" - a pantomime cops and robbers thing they stage at these events. We also see, for the big finale, a man preparing a JET PACK (standard issue now at sporting events)! On the frozen hockey pitch, there are trampolines and those gyroscope spin things, girls sliding down and performing gymnastics on material draped from the roof of the stadium like curtains (surreal, Circus, Circus-esque colourful, clowns, harlequins set against the ice, grey of the stadium and the hardness of the hockey players).

Bond's RV with GALA is interrupted by MACE and SM goons. She gets kidnapped and Bond has a Kobe docks-style foot chase, losing his gun in the process, with the goons which is taken by the audience as part of the show.

He then runs on ice (incongrous tuxedo-clad Bond amidst the throng, engaging Q spikes), and using hockey sticks and helmets and other pieces of kit as weapons, fights his way through the myriad of goons. Knocks one goon out with puck as knuckleduster ("Get the puck out of here!")*. Weaves through the act, the ropes, the trampolines. Bounces bad guys on the trampolines, puts one in a gyroscope thing ("Shaken AND stirred!").

Bond then trampolines up to one of the drapes and climbs to the top of the stadium. Jet packer is overcome by MACE who jet packs halfway up stadium. Bond leaps off drape and jumps on MACE and they fight, in mid air at jigging and thrusting through and around the dangling, coloured drapes. Bond eventually wraps one of the drapes around neck of MACE, leaps off MACE and on to the same drape wrapped around MACE, kicking the thrust button as he does so. The drape shoots up, with Bond on it to top of Stadium. Bond grabs ceiling hatch while MACE is strangled by tightening rope ("Looks like he didn't give a puck!")*. Clutching and clawing, Bond eventually gets on to the high, service walkway and opens the hatch.
* Moore-isms galore!

Bond exits the Stadium at the top, revealing stunning views of Toronto and a huge Maple Leaf Canadian flag and the tuxedo flares on our man, flapping in the wind on top of the stadium. Moore flicks lint of his lapel and straightening hair and tie. A hero moment captured by circling helicopter shot, pulling back as it goes around.

SPECTREVILLE, CANADIAN MOUNTAINS
Wrap up now. Spaang arranged the Stockholm assault to distance himself from SPS and it's eventual use. Turns out GALA is Canadian Secret Service, operating undercover in POTW. B tracks her down to the Spaang Train depot which services his mining interests in Canada. A vast fleet of freight trains with turntables and raised structures is built into mountains. An gigantic industrial train depot, huge steel cranes, repair works, and goods areas. Spaang has even tricked out part of it to resemble a Wild West town called “Spectreville”. Bond is captured and receives a "Brooklyn Stomping" (Roger jokes afterwards: "That's Cubby's favourite scene!") before an army of Mounties comes in to the rescue via a fierce battle leading to a predictable climax although Spaang gets away.

THE VELD, SOUTH AFRICA
A mine complex and SPAANG and JOHN BARLOW (Spaang's agent in POTW) are busily getting all their travelling papers and travelling gold. Shaft opens up to reveal Derek Meddings' miniature helicopter pad. Takes off. Bond, on ground with mobile anti-aircraft gun, warns them and then AK-AK's the chopper from the skies. Drives gun-carrier through veld with GALA on hand and they slip into luxurious mobile quarters in cab. However, M, Q, the Minister and Gogol get patched through ("USSR only wants peace in Africa. Spaang was nothing to do with us" - see, all nicey, nicey in Roger Moore-land!) as Bond is enjoying GALA. "Ah, so this is a Mountie!" and "You sure can nuck!"
