Brosnan could have definitely continued on

I refuse to believe the Bond franchise went off the rails with DAD and "had to be rebooted" with CR. The producers could have kept Pierce Brosnan for a fifth film - with Miss Moneypenny, Robinson, Q and gadgets and so forth - without trouble.

One only needs to look at FYEO for proof that after an OTT entry, the Bond films can go back to a more down-to-earth approach without changing actors.

Discuss and for goodness sake, DO NOT turn this into another DAD-bashing thread.

    I think it was the right time for a change of actor as IMHO Brosnan was just getting too old for the part. In AVTAK for instance Moore looked unbelievably old and it was very hard to believe all these women still fancied him.

    I like Brosnan as Bond. I do not, however, support his movies all that much. The direction they were going with Pierce definately needed to change, and that's what they did with Casino Royale.

    I completely agree. IMO Brosnan had one, possibly two films still left in him. I don't think that Brosnan was getting too old at all. He was still younger than Moore was, when Moore did FYEO, OP and AVTAK, (and Moore IMO did not become too old until AVTAK), and IMO Brosnan looked younger in DAD than Craig did in CR. (Take that Loeff. :p :D) My problems with DAD had nothing to do with Brosnan, and I honestly don't know why he needed to be dumped. I think he should have made a fifth film in 2004, and if he was up for it, a sixth film im 2006, before someone else taking over in 2008. I also don't think the series needed to be rebooted, but that's another story. ;)

    He was getting a bit long in the tooth, but I find that quite funny in the old Bond films, so I would have enjoyed it. Whether the general audience would have or they'd have lost patience with another generic Bond film starring an increasingly be-jowled and creased actor being the straw that broke the camel's back as the producers thought was about to happen is something we'll never know the answer the to. I think they were probably right to overhaul it before it got into trouble; it's best to leave parties when you're still enjoying them.

    Hmm... :v Clearly, the skies are different colours in our respective worlds :))

    Personally, I would not have begrudged Brozzer another time round---certainly the follow-up to DAD needed to be somewhat muted in comparison, no matter who wore the tux!---but I'm glad they went the way they did.

    Eon have made a sound strategic move, and are well-poised for the future, IMO. Cheers Dan! {[]

    I think he should have had one last film. He was very smooth as Bond and did deserve a better swan song than DAD.

    In fact, I would have loved to have seen Brosnan been given Casino Royale. Granted not the CR that rookie Bond, but more as an experienced agent who finds the love of his life. Having Bond say "the bitch is dead" would have made a killer goodbye.

    A more grounded Brosnan follow up would have made the reboot less welcome or refreshing.

    Also, I do think DAD jumped the shark with a CGI stunt, invisible car and so on. I just don't think they could pull it back after that.

    And there's no guarantee another Brozzer film would have been that great. All his films were a bit duff in some way or other. Really CR isn't THAT inspired. Chase scenes, casino scenes etc all formula stuff, only Craig and reboot idea make it seem fresh.

    In theory, yes, he could have done another in the five year gap. If he'd kept his weight down.

    I can't really imagine Brozzer running around that building site in CR with his dodgy knees (he managed to injure himself just running after the hovercraft in DAD).

    Great Bond, but left with dignity at the right time IMO.

    I think Brosnan's days were numbered as soon as Eon finally got the rights to film 'Casino Royale.' Rather than seeing him do one more Bond, I wish that at least one of the four he did was actually worthy of him.

    I do wish there had been one more Brosnan film to provide "closure" for the original series before rebooting it. As long as it took to make CR, it seems it would've been easy to make one last Brosnan film in the interim. My recommendation for a story - Bond seeks revenge against Irma Bunt. The way the whole dismissal of Brosnan was handled, I felt like I never had a chance to say goodbye. :(

    No, it was simply Brosnan's time to go.

    I'm not going to claim that I never liked him as Bond, but I did eventually realize that something was missing. Both Connery and Brosnan could get into a brawl with some henchman and still have their hair looking perfect in the next shot. But Connery had a ruthlessness about him that Brosnan never had (even when shooting Elektra in cold blood). Brosnan's Bond was just sissified to a degree.

    When I heard that Brosnan was leaving, I was rather welcoming a change in the series. When I saw Casino Royale, there was no doubt in my mind that EON made the absolute right move.
