Will Bond ever end?

I'm just wondering, as much as I love bond and think there is a lot of life left in it, how long will it actually last.

Nothing is forever. Not even Coronation Street.

They keep on making Sherlock Holmes and Robin Hood films. I think Bond has that kind of immortalit about him.

Though there might be some serious gaps between films.

Bond did end--- in Die Another Day. Fortunately, however, he was reincarnated in Casino Royale. :007)

According to Cubby...Bond will last "Until Doomsday."

    1000% correct.

Sweepy, rest assured, as long as movies are made...Bond will survive...and flourish.

Your shocking question, however, gives me pause.

Only certain... WHITE... cats are known to doubt Bond's immortality.

I have always wondered that myself, I am sure that prior to Goldeneye many a moviegoer thought the James Bond's days on the silver screen were over.

It came as no surprise to me that after six years with no new films at the time, following the success
of Goldeneye that the series would continue for a while.

As Bond 22 gets underway I think that we will have one more film, and then the series will end.
Not that I want it to mind you, but I feel like they should leave on a high note and make more films just because they can. Many other films series have gone on longer than needed and I would not want Bond to fall victim to that.

Bond will never end, as such. Every now and then someone makes another Sherlock Holmes show, another Tarzan thriller, another Philip Marlowe film, another Dracula drama or Frankenstein flick. The gaps between entries may get longer, that's all.

There's also TV, of course- all of the characters mentioned above have featured in TV series, usually when it's thought there's no more mileage to be gotten from the cinema. Bond is far from that stage, as yet; the box-office results of CR speak for themselves. Bond 22 won't flop (after the success of CR, that seems certain) so there will be a Bond 23. Even if that flops (highly unlikely), there'll be a Bond 24 which will "correct" what 23 did wrong (cf OHMSS/DAF).

In a sense I've always felt that 'Licence To Kill' was the end of an era for the Bond films.

Nah, like others have said. I think the Bond films will only be the start of it. There are huge fan communities, books, games, memrobillia etc. and I believe there will be many different bond series and maybe even TV one day. Although DN-LTK was supposed to be the original series I'm glad GE came along because LTK was rubbish and it brought bond back to life which is one of the reasons why it is so high on my list.

Just like there were series or seasons of Star Trek and so on, I think that there have been seasons of 007. Let me explain:

    1. Dr No and FRWL
    2. GF to TMWTGG
    3. SPY and MR
    4. FYEO to AVTAK
    5. TLD and LTK
    6. Brosnan's
    7. Craig's

Would be interested to hear what other like minded Bond fans feel!

This is quite an interesting point actually, as I agree with some of your post. I strongly disagree that LTK is rubbish, I think it's cracking Bond film. However, I do agree that it was the last of the original series of Bond films.

I liken this to Doctor Who, the revival has been incredibly successful, but lacks the charm of the original series, no matter how good the lead actor is. Interestingly, the original Doctor Who ended in 1989 as well. Some year that was :D

    quote : Bond 22 won't flop

How can you know this for sure , nothing is "guaranteed $$$" even for Bond.

Why on gods green Earth would they cancel this financial cash cow...honestly if you were in charge , would you ??

As long as there's audience they'll be made.

Here's a slightly fuller version of the quote which perhaps better explains my point. IMO it would be truly strange if after 21 financial successes (and counting the two non-official films, 23- even CR 67 went into the black eventually) Bond 22 doesn't turn a profit. If CR 06 had shown a dip in box-office returns then there might have been room for doubt- but that has happened with Bond films before and hasn't created a trend. In any case, CR 06 did NOT show a dip, quite the reverse.

The simple answer is as long as the movies continue to make money they will be made. Hollywood is not about art its about dollars and Bond is the perverbial cash cow. Nothing the studios like more than a sucessful franchise.

Even if in the future the public did go off Bond (which after 45 years and six actors seems unlikely) there would be another reboot sometime in the future.

Bond movies, like diamonds, are forever.

In reply to the post question, as long as they continue to print money, the Bond series will go on. This is actually a popularly recurring topic and I've dessented to the idea of the series going on "till doomsday." I think that eventually reaching 100 movies in the series will cheapen everything, like how one Simpsons episode have become like any other one. Context-wise, it's difficult for me to respectfully and logically acknowledge a continuity from Bond's cold-war, post WWII beginnings to the time when governmental structures transition from national to planetary groupings. One day, will Bond be reporting to the Earth Prime Chancellor's Secret Service?

Actually, if CR is year one, then MR could be set in the future, and presumably isn't so farfetched after all... :s :))
