I've heard some people refer to Tatiana Romanova as "Tanya", why is that?

Was she really called Tanya, or do people just not get her name right! Bah! ?:)

Her name is Tatiana, Tania is a friendly abbreviation-

(Bond says his name)
"Mine's Tatiana Romanova... My friends call me Tania" (FRWL, Chapter 20).

(Like Tilly being a possible variation on Matilda)
