IMO everything is good except for the theme song.
Although admittedly the first half is literally non-stop action

Having just seen it it really pains me to say that the only redeeming quality is the short run time, but even at 106 minutes it dragged. Everything that CR had going for it is absent in QOS. It is an unmitigated disaster. The audience I was part of was excited on the way in and oddly silent on the way out. It did not go down well at all .
I spoke with one of the staff to see how audiences have been reacting and was told that the feedback had been very poor.Sorry.

I have heard from several UK brothers that they felt the editing was poor but that somewhere in there a good Bond movie was shot...just not released due to the choppy editing. One person went so far as to say that they felt the producers tried so hard to get away from the old Bond that they got away from Bond altogether.....although they ALL admitted it would take multiple viewings to truly understand how they felt.

I think you've got it in one!

You need to see this one a few times! I have only seen it once (so far :) ).

This was a good modern Bond film, but was let down by the Jason Bourne style of editing. For example, in the opening car chase it is very hard to see what is happening, with cars exploding and crashing left right and center. Why could they not have a nice car chase without all the crashes anyway!

One part of the film that i did not like was the text that told the audience where it was set. it should be much smaller and less in-your-face. Also when the subtitles came on, why yellow????? What is so bad with Black or white?????

But one the hole i liked the film, cant wait for 'Bond 23' :)) :D

    Any redeeming qualities?

Too many to mention, the film is a complete joy, a masterclass in film making. It's stunning, visually compelling and thought provoking. Yes its brutal at times but also very touching at others.

    Any negatives?

    No, not from me.

Avekev I read your post before I saw the film and thought it was hyperbole, but no, you're dead on. Excellent film.

Other then being a wonderful diversion, I don't see what a new Bond has to do with the elections.

As little as possible, hopefully :# Our country is headed toward hell on a hot rail...

As for QoS...it seems as if Eon might have yet another tremendously polarizing box office smash on their hands :v I hope so...

It's fascinating to see the raves and utter pans bouncing back and forth---like so many tennis balls at a practice session---with almost no middle ground being staked out. Seems it's either brilliant...or s**t :)) Perhaps my prediction about a BonditicalTM 'party line vote' is being borne out...I think I'll start a thread :v

If even a fraction of the praise is warranted, we're going to be debating this one for a good long while...

Hey Loeff, I wonder which Bonditical party QOS would fall into? Obviously we haven't seen it here in the US yet, but from all of the reviews it doesn't seem to fall into a traditionalist party or into the reboot lovers party. Might there be a new Bonditical party emerging?

I was impressed by the way the script used several Fleming elements (the title, some paraphrased dialogue from the novel of CR, and half-a-dozen characters), as well as the understated homages to earlier adventures (GF, TSWLM, LTK- no doubt there were others).

I thought the end reminiscent of another short story.

Now that sounds like my Bond! Very geeked to see it.

Great question, disco...actually, I'm mulling over a thread/article about this---we seem to have quite a dangerous new beast on the loose, and it's playing hell with any sort of predictable reactions I'd anticipated :o ...we've got CR admirers recoiling, CR detractors enjoying, longtime Bond fans alternately praising and condemning...

My own prediction model is in tatters. I think the quiet times at AJB are over for a while B-)

Yeah, seems to be getting a lot of "love it" and "hate it" reviews from fans... so how 'bout them Phillies?

Sure there's another party, it's called the Bond-Centrist, lover of Fleming's written word and appreciator of any film attempt to do him justice. At the same time, the Centrist can relax and enjoy the lighter aspects of Bond. QoS could very well be enjoyed by such a person.

(And by M's frosty glare, that's me!)

As for the Phillies, If I could reenact a scene with Donald Sutherland from the Dirty Dozen - "Never heard of them!" :D

    Getting back on topic.

QoS has MANY redeeming features. I really enjoyed the film

    Fast paced
    Never dull
    Intelligent
    Witty dialogue
    Great chases
The opera scene is beautifully shot
    Beautiful Aston Martin

All in all a great film!

A little concerned over this apparent hand-cam approach. I seriously dislike that trend in film-making.

It's herky-jerky and headache inducing. A very offsetting method to shoot a movie in my view.

If you are worried by that, sit towards the back of the theater ...

On my second viewing, I'll go back to sit at the back.

I definitely think Bond centrists can enjoy Quantum of Solace. Casino Royale is my favourite Bond film, yet I love Moonraker; I prefer the likes of From Russia with Love, yet I can enjoy A View to a Kill in a strange sort of way. And QoS is one of my favourites (it will take a second viewing to cement my final thoughts, it is so different).

As I said previously there are lots of redeeming qualities. 007 is *not* a 'machine' here. This isn't Bourne. This isn't Statham. This is definitely Bond, the character being explored in wonderful little moments throughout that I won't ruin. It is a sophisticated, different Bond, but for many of us that is not a bad thing at all. :)

Okay, well here's another way to look at it. What's the best way to tee yourself up for this film?

A film to go beforehand (not CR it seems)

    Some music

    And a drink....

    which ones?

Do not watch CR. You will be immediately irked that he's not wearing the same powder blue shirt/tie combo that he had on at White's villa some "twenty minutes" beforehand.

I'm a bit of a geek for things like that and it annoyed me a little tiny bit...

Lol its very funny because I was pondering on the very same issue, it is very odd, and its a shame such a deliberate mistake was made, its also a different gun he uses in the chase than the one he shoots White with, now this might be taking the film too literally, but why not {[]
