I gather it wasn't such a surprise....

Announcement on the website tonight:
A new James Bond novel will be published 365 days from today and will be written by Jeffrey Deaver, the US crime writer.
I don't have anything more to say about this. Deaver is not an author I hAve ever felt the need to take up, although I have met him in real life.
Let's hope he has a good title to work with!

I haven't read any of Deavers books. What do AJB members think of his books? Is he a good choise?

I've read a fewof his books -they are ok -although how well he will write a 007 novel? Its hard to say. He is much more of a thriller writer than Faulks so at least it should be a bit more exciting and realistic. Its just whether or not he will get those Flemingesque details right without making the story feel more of a pastiche. Either way though -it will be worth buying and will be worthy of my bookshelf -if only for the sake of having a complete collection of 007 novels. :D

My sentiments too. Somewhat sad that the only reason I can think of wanting to buy a 007 novel is to complete the set. I've been gemming up on Deaver and he sounds like he'll do a good job, but how can you measure any author against the Master? Can't do worse than Faulks... well, you can but I hope not!

There hasn't been any excitement in the 007 books since Benson burned out. Faulks's book worked until you realized that it was Fleming Instant blend-just add water.
I hope that this new one turns out well-at least they haven't forgotten literary Bond again!

I had a flick through a Deaver in the library. It's the world of Silence of the Lambs, criminal psychology and police procedure from what I can tell. An airport read, lots of dialogue to make the pages go quicker. It doesn't seem to have that artsy poetic flourish Fleming had, no passages you'd want to re-read exactly. Just a snapshot impression, mind.

I read quite a few Deaver books being from the U.S. and an avid fan of reading and I think he'll do well and will shine a new light on the books. He is a thriller writer with the ability to make your heart stand still and suprise you at every corner, something that can go great in a bond book. He is also a huge fan of Fleming and will keep Fleming's bond I expect. If you have any doubts about him not being suited to anything other than "police crime" then pick up a copy of Garden of Beasts.

No need to worry. Mr Deaver is a first class thriller writer.
Bond is safe in his hands.
