Skyfall's Box Office Competition

I ran across a 2012 film release calender while looking for something else and noticed our friend Mr. Bond will have some box office competition in the States. The same week Bond opens, a film called Ouija opens. Ouija is based on the board game of the same name and is produced by Michael Bay and directed by McG, so I think it will have marketing muscle behind it. The following week The Twilight Sage Breaking Dawn part 2 opens. Since Breaking Dawn part 1 was a box office titan, I would imagine part 2 will be just as big. Looks like Bond will have his work cut out for him.

Well, at least James Bond isn't going up against The Dark Knight Rises like The Amazing Spider-Man will be, this summer! Speaking of which, Sony Pictures or whoever the hell owns the movie rights for Spider-Man, is **** ing crazy if they think they can go up against Batman and Warner Bros. with only a two week head start!!!

The Dark Knight Rises opens on Friday July 20th, 2012.

And, The Amazing Spider-Man opens on Tuesday July 3th, 2012.

It's going to be one hell of a summer...make that one hell of a year because I get to see Batman, James Bond, AND Spider-Man in the same freaking year!!!!

The avengers coming too in 2012, right?

Right, but to be perfectly honest I don't care about the Avengers too much. Because I only saw one Avengers set-up film in the theater and that was Iron Man 2...I didn't see Iron Man 1, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, or Thor, I just saw Iron Man 2 because that was all I cared about. And hopefully Iron Man 3 will be at least a decent movie.

The Twilight film draws an entirely different audience than a Bond film (girls 12-16) so it's not going to have much of an impact (although it will probably replace "Skyfall" as #1 that following week). As for "Ouija" I saw an LA times article from 8/24/11 that the production was scrapped due to budgetary problems. "The Avengers" release date is May 2012. So this fall is a great opportunity for Bond to do well at the box office.

Should the Skyfall premiere be moved to July 27, 2012, the same day as the start of the London Olympics or earlier?

Putting a British film up against 2 weeks of the Olympics would be bad news. Cinemas will be dead in the UK during this period. I think an end of years release is best like the previous few 007's.

Bond has a built-in audience - since the first reboot with Brosnan all the films from the 90s to present have made roughly the same (adjusted, slight bump for CR). Summer, winter, don't think it matters, the folks who go see Bond go see Bond.

There is no competition... for Bond. :007)

If Skyfall debuted around July 23-27, 2012, the crowd will be split to 50%, others would watch the Olympics and the other half would watch James Bond in theatres (in the US, UK, any country).

Late fall 2012 will remain as the release date. EON won't get burned again as it did with LTK. They struck fool's gold with a summer release of TLD.

Glad to see that Skyfall does not have much competion at the boxoffice come next Thanksgiving/Christmas time.

Even with all the family type movies Hollywood comes out with at this time of year, Bond has still managed to make money.

Took a while for the penny to drop on that one, as the next film in the Bourne series is in fact 'Bourne free' as Jason Bourne won't be in it. It's like a spin off.

Either way, adds to a great saga, not Bond but the Americans do a good enough job! :))
