Line from Kincade (Spoiler)

Here's another thread about pronunciation :))

Although this time, it's not about Adele's song, but a scene in the film:
Is it me, or did Kincade address M as Emma? I am sure he called her that, and I heard it twice I think.

Which of these possible reasons do you think explains this?:

1 - Kincade misheard bond when he said her name was M - an error on Kincade's part.
2 - Albert Finney's pronunciation was poor, and he was supposed to say M but delivered it wrong.
3 - M's real name is infact Emma. And bond did say Emma, but pronounced it wrong, as M.

This is not something that bothers me, but just wanted to nitpick for fun and curiosity. Any ideas anyone?

He does call her Emma. But why would he call her M? Nobody is called M! Kincaid doesn't even know that she and Bond work for MI6, so when Bond introduces her as M, Kincaid understandably assumes he mis-heard, and her name is Emma.

That makes sense. It never crossed my mind that bond didn't say where he knew M from. Sounds like you're probably right.

It's a joke. He mishears Bond saying 'M' as 'Emma'. Got a pretty big laugh in both of my showings.

Just a bit of comic relief I think, seeing M out of her comfort zone in a dusty old manor with two macho mean, one of whom doesn't even get her name right!

Never got that, thought it was her real name, hence why she is called M. After all, in CR doesn't Bond allude to it, saying 'I always thought M was a random generated name, I never thought' before she cuts him off. But then I thought they might have known each other before, I don't know the film had lost me way before that point.

'M' cannot stand for Emma ?:)

When Bond introduces her as M, Kinkaid misunderstands it as him saying Em, short for Emma. There was the odd chuckle at my screening, including me. I thought it was a nice touch

No it can't 'stand' for it, but it's wordplay like 'Em' and 'Emma'...

    Or not, who knows.

Indeed M is mistakenly called 'Emma' as Kincade misheard Bond introduce her.

Her real name is Barbara Mawdsley, hence M.

Thanks for the responses guys. Looks like the majority think the same, and I pretty much thought this too. Thanks for clearing that up!

Is Dench's M still Barbara Mawdsley? that was the name given to her "evil queen of numbers" M of Brosnan's movies but is she still the same M?. in Casino Royale the joke of "I always thought M was a randomly assigned letter..." seems to work better if M has an embarrassing first name beginning with M.

    Hi Solaris,

think of this as "alternate universe" territory, if you are into your Sci Fi. The Craig films are a restart, so everythig that happened if the previous films are a seperate framework. So yes, M in CR - Skyfall IS Barbara Mawdsley, but a different one. Her lines to Villiers about missing the Cold War imply she has been active in espoinage for a very long time, wheras The Brosnan era version of Mawdsley had to prove herself from the start.
Ie same actress, but a different version of the same character. - I think!

Re Kincade's reaction to M's name, I have a friend at work called Ema, I call her "Ems's" for short. If someone was not paying attention , I suppose they could assume I am calling her "M".
This is Thunderbird 2, how can I be of assistance?
