Back on topic, bottom line: I think TB is a better Bond story, but that YOLT is a better Bond production.
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

Agree and IMO that's where YOLT messes up bc it only focused on the production and not the story(which was terrible IMO) and that's why Connery is boring.

As much as I enjoy TB (and I REALLY love the underwater stuff), YOLT just has a kinetic energy to it that cannot be denied. And I love Connery's performance. YES, I SAID IT.

Not even in the Japanese wedding? or the sumo fights?or the long space scenes with prehistoric FX? That must be at least a good 30 minutes of the movie...

Of course those FX might not have seemed prehistoric to anyone who saw the film on the big screen on its release and has watched it many, many times since. You know, someone like BL, chrisisall, me...

Nope - I genuinely enjoy every moment. I have always been fascinated by the exposure to Japanese culture that is conveyed by scenes such as the wedding and the sumo wrestling matches. And as a young lad sitting in the movie theater watching those space scenes on that huge screen, I recall having a feeling of awe, not boredom. I still feel that way, even at my advanced age. Face it, I love that movie! :007)

As fascinating as japanese culture is, I'd rather watch a National Geographic documentary and not a Bond movie. I's great to have those cultural references spicing up the movies, but in YOLT I always felt they overdid it.

That is a good point, and I can relate. My first Bond movie in a theatre as a young lad was LTK, and I've always been very fond of the movie. Of course it's highly a personal thing, like falling in love. 40 years later you still see the person you fell in love with and not the wrinkles,no matter how obvious they might be to anyone else.

    .

To be honest it was seeing the Bonds on the big screen that started my wanderlust.

It was 1979 and I was ten watching Moonraker (my second after 'Spy') and to see the fight atop the Sugarloaf, the boats of Venice and Iguacu Falls opened it up for me. I got myself a job which enabled me to travel. I have been to Brazil - my favourite country.

Remember the feeling of a country were a feature of the books. How would CR have turned if set in Scarborough not Royale-les-Aux

Wow, I envy you, that must have been awesome! I always loved MR, even watching it on a crappy pan-scanned VHS.

True, I agree that the different countries, exotic places are key to the Bond formula, books and films. I just think they overdid it in YOLT where IMO they focused too much in the Japan canvas, as opposed to MR where Brazil is featured in the background, yet they don't spend 10 minutes in a capoeira exhibition.

To be honest the locations were a feature of the books ie sunkissed Jamaica, rundown Harlem and exotic Japan. You have it that the locations are part of the scenario as well.

The locations are one of the places you look forward too in a Bond movie...

I think you're missing the point. I completely agree that exotic places are part of the Bond formula. I just think in YOLT they overdid that element. A matter of taste. Others seem to like the Japan wedding, the sumo fights, but IMO in YOLT what should be the Japan background becomes the foreground.

Precisely. And for my taste the focus on Japan as the site of the action wasn't overdone at all. It is one of the reasons YOLT has such high entertainment and re-watch value. :D
