I agree. Bond has either been played by people who haven't previously had highly successful film careers, or were big television stars. The Bond films don't need to get a big name star to sell tickets.
I could see AT Johnson - he has a distinctive look and his eyes seem to elicit the appearance of someone who has been through tough circumstances - like Bond would have. Standen looks good too. I agree Cavill is out of the running due to his future commitments and cost and I just think he's a bit too good looking for Bond as I thought Brosnan was.

And yes, Cumberbatch would be a great 007 villain. Would like to see the villains stay younger and more vigorous in the modern era. He'd be more exciting as a young Blofeld type, living it up in a glam Swiss Alps chalet/main lair hangout, petting the Persian cat, feeding it live goldfish, instead of the older guy Charles Gray, Donald Pleasance kind of characterization.

Any future actor considered down the road will be an unknown or virtual unknown now. They would also need to be young enough to carry four possibly five films to avoid Sir Roger syndrome. (As great a Bond as the others, but he was too old for AVTAK.)

I happen to like Jeffrey Wright quite a bit as Leiter, but Bernie Casey is actually my favorite version of the character. He has the build and physical stature to appear to be able to hold his own against anyone threatening him or Bond, but he also radiates the charm and good humor that reminds me of the way Felix comes across in the novels (race aside). Not that Wright doesn't display a certain amount of charm himself, particularly in Casino Royale, but I think Casey works better and I would love to have seen the chemistry between him and Craig if they had shared the same Bond film era.

One problem is that as soon as an actor gets big, casting directors start looking for people that resemble that actor, so that eventually there's a kind of sameness going on across films.
Bond needs to break out of that look. And too many people don't qualify.

Of the folks floating around right now, none really strongly appeals to me. One or two might work. Adam Raynor, for instance, has some qualities, even if in some photos me makes me think Hugh Laurie and Robert Downey, Jr., had a baby:

I know what you mean. The problem is all of the younger actors -- and he's actually pushing 40 -- have the same generic suburban upper middle class look, or they resemble actors I'm already tired of seeing, like Robert Downey, Jr., Tom Cruise, Leonard DiCrapio, Ryan Gosling, etc.
Whoever they cast as Bond has to look masculine but weathered like he's been in the real world, as opposed to spent his days pumping iron in the gym and taking creatine or hormones. Old school masculine. He also shouldn't be pretty. Bond is handsome. The problem is the choices are very limited by these constraints. Today's "actors" tend to fall into either the pretty underwear model type or the obviously villainous type (though sometimes they cross over).
I don't buy into the "a good actor can become the role" nonsense when the role is iconic. Either the man has what it takes or he doesn't, and then on top of that, he has to be a good actor.

He plays a regular on Homeland and has been in (sometimes even starred) in good, but modestly successful movies. I think his look is the right kind of mix of distinctive and leading man looks:
