Damn that’s a shame, their gameplay demo vids have looked awesome!
This was my first thought. They've recreated a beloved classic off their own backs and brought it into the modern age, surely if they slap the official logo, Brosnan's mug and other signs of authenticity they'd have quite the cash cow.
It would certainly fill the void any Bond gaming fan currently feels. To my knowledge there is no other Bond gaming projects ongoing at this point in time so why not utilise the popularity of this one to drum up new interest in the franchise and/or reinvigorate Bond videogames.
Perhaps we can enlist any well connected AJB members to lobby the important folks to achieve this.
Or, more likely, I'll dig out my N64 for a blast and have to settle for that.
My guess is there are three factors stopping a new 'proper' Bond game for consoles:
1) The terrible critical and commercial reception of 007 Legends, which makes Eon wary of getting their fingers burnt again;
2) Eon wanting to concentrate on films rather than spreading their resources too thinly, into projects which might be less successful;
3) Sales figures. This is the big one. While the earlier Craig console games sold rather well, with Quantum of Solace selling over 3.78 million units and GoldenEye 007 selling over 3.16 million, from then on the sales began to fall. Blood Stone sold only 1.21 million and 007 Legends an unimpressive 0.78 million (less than half a million sold on each competing console system for Legends.) A new Bond game would need to be marketed strongly in a crammed console shooter/action market, competing with CoD, etc. Is this really worth the time and effort for Eon?
Those are my thoughts on why we haven't seen a new Bond game lately...
"The spectre of defeat..."
I agree with everything you've said. I'd only point out that there's vast amounts of money in video games. Goldeneye 64 is one of the most beloved video games of all time. If they combined a great game with the 007 brand that will be a hit. I don't think there's any doubt that everyone *wants* a good Bond game. There just hasn't been a great Bond game since 1997. Nightfire was ok. But everything else has been below average.
I'd point to the PS4 Spider-Man game. A similar kind of situation. The game wasn't a sequel. Wasn't even a launch title. It was just a well made game using a well known property. That game made over a billion dollars. Sony/Marvel invested the cash to secure a great a developer. Which, as I understand it, is the single most important step in making a good game. Then, of course, allowing the time and budget to that developer. I'll overestimate the numbers: call it 400 million in production and advertising costs. That's more than 600 million in profit. To say nothing of potential mircosales within the game.
All of this to say, yes, it absolutely *could* be worth their time. They just need to put in the money to develop something more advanced than another shooter clone with James Bond skins.
The developers have said that the project will continue but that all ties to James Bond will obviously be removed. They have already renamed it to a more generic spy title and this will also free them up to release the game on sites like Steam and possibly even do a console port.
